Here are some other threads with more info you may find helpful. How do you keep track of names you love, like or loathe?, Calling all Name Nerds! and How do you organize your names?. These are my replies paraphrased from the other boards.
I used to write everything down as I found them, but it was messy and I could never figure out where everything was. Now I use Evernote. I have one notebook divided into Boys Names, Girls Names, Combos I’m Actually Considering, Notes and Family & Friends Names.
In Boys & Girls Names, I have a template that lets me put meanings, origins, pronunciations, nicknames, notes, combos using that name and alternatives (e.i. I may prefer [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], but want to make note of [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] just in case as both are derivatives of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]). I can move names between the sections as my tastes change.
With so many of the same name in our family, it’s hard to remember who is who. I use my Family & Friends Names section to keep track of everyone. I don’t want to use names repeatedly just because they’re family names – I want my kids to have their own names. I also use family & friends names as a starting point if I want to honor a specific person (i.e. family member named [name_u]Michael[/name_u], honor name [name_u]Micah[/name_u]).
I recently added a new section entitled Archive section each for both boys & girls where I move names I still like but am not considering using into so I still have them on hand.
