Which do you like better?

I am due in about 9 weeks and was basically settled on a name, but having a little doubt now so I’m still on the search for “the one”. We have a 5 year old son named [name]Tate[/name] and were set on naming our new bundle of joy (girl) [name]Juniper[/name] until I recently stumbled upon the name Elowen, which both my husband and I like a lot right now. I really need some outside opinion on which is the name to go with. So…

[name]Tate[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name]
or
[name]Tate[/name] and Elowen

Thanks in advance for all your help!

I don’t like Elowen - it sounds like the initials L.O.N. to me. [name]How[/name] about [name]Eloise[/name] instead? Not keen on [name]Juniper[/name] either, but I quite like [name]Juno[/name] - both would get called [name]June[/name] for short though which isn’t pretty to me.

If I HAD to choose one it’d be [name]Juniper[/name]. I adore the name [name]Tate[/name] though

[name]Tate[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name]

Is Elowen pronounced [name]EL[/name]-oh-wen or el-OH-wen?

I want to love [name]Juniper[/name] (a very close friend has it earmarked for her baby due in [name]September[/name], I think), but I just don’t.

I pronounce it [name]El[/name]-oh-wen

I think Elowen and [name]Juniper[/name] are both ok, though Elowen also sounds a bit like ‘hello en’. I think out of the two I prefer [name]Juniper[/name] nn [name]Juno[/name]

I like [name]Arwen[/name] which is similar? And [name]Eloise[/name] and [name]Juno[/name] as suggested

I love [name]Juniper[/name]. Elowen looks weird to me.

[name]Tate[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name]

I just don’t like [name]Juniper[/name] and I have yet to see the appeal

[name]Tate[/name] & Elowen

I think they are both beautiful but I would go with Elowen because it’s unexpected. It seems like [name]Juniper[/name] has been on just about everyone’s list… and I’m the sort of person that will probably not go for the most out-there name but I will go far in trying to find the least popular, most beautiful name. That is the thrill for me…

[name]One[/name] of the major factors in name choosing for me is meaning. From a little search I did, Elowen means ‘[name]Elm[/name]’ and The [name]Juniper[/name] tree’s name is derived from the Latin word juniperus. In Latin, juniperus is combination of the word junio, which means young, and parere, to produce, hence youth producing, or evergreen.’. Elms on the other hand, “occur often in Pastoral [name]Poetry[/name], where they symbolise the idyllic life, their shade being mentioned as a place of special coolness and peace. In [name]German[/name] mythology, the first woman was fashioned from an elm.” (wiki) It all depends on the qualities you’re looking for in a name.

Another thing that usually affects my decision: nicknames. I’ve mentioned in another post I’ve met a tween Elowen who was so calm and composed and witty-- she goes by Lo. I really thought that was so pretty and stylish. To me, [name]Juniper[/name]'s disadvantage is that everyone will shorten her name to [name]June[/name] or [name]Junie[/name]… which takes away from [name]Juniper[/name]'s beauty, I feel. It’s not that [name]June[/name] or [name]Junie[/name] are awful… they are just so simple compared to [name]Juniper[/name]. Again, that is my opinion only.

I would say keep playing with both names… imagine calling your baby girl… just picture her in your mind. Who do you see?

[name]Hi[/name], I like both of the names. [name]Juniper[/name] will likely be called [name]June[/name]/[name]Junie[/name]/[name]Juno[/name] and Elowen could be [name]Elle[/name]/[name]Ellie[/name]/[name]Winnie[/name]. Which nn do you prefer?

I like the nickname options for both names actually. [name]One[/name] reason I like the name [name]Juniper[/name] is because it is a type of shrub and my name is also a type of shrub so there is that connection. In addition, my sister and one of my grandmothers were born in the month of [name]June[/name], so I feel there’s that loose association as well. Elowen, as someone else mentioned, means “elm tree” and I like the nature connection to my name once again. Plus, my initials were E.L.M prior to getting married. A little cheesy maybe, but I like it.

Great choices! I really like them both! Actually they are both on my short list too.) I lean slightly towards [name]Juniper[/name] because I like the nickname possibilities a little more, but I don’t think you can go wrong with either of them. I like a previous poster’s suggestion to hang on to both of them for a while before making a decision.

Definitely [name]Juniper[/name].

What middle name have you chosen? Without knowing that, I pick [name]Juniper[/name].

Elowen!
Can I ask, Off topic, what sort of responses do you get to the name [name]Tate[/name]? It is a name I have started liking and just wondered how you have found it?

I prefer Elowen.

I love them both. I’ve loved Elowen ever since I saw it for the first time. I am considering it for a second daughter, but I am afraid it sounds too similar to [name]Rowan[/name].

With [name]Tate[/name], which I also love by the way, I think [name]Juniper[/name] is a better fit stylistically because they’re both vintage and quirky. But [name]Tate[/name] and Elowen sound good too, so you just have try both of them for awhile and see which one feels right.

I prefer [name]Juniper[/name]!

Good luck

I love [name]Juniper[/name]!!
