I prefer [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] but I dont personally find [name_f]Freya[/name_f] a pretty name.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] has nice nickname options too!
I know of a few little girls with both names so I would say they are equally popular (where I am in Australia anyway). [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] may be slightly more popular but not by much.
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]! [name_f]Freya[/name_f] seems a bit trendy unless you have Scandinavian roots? But I still like both. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is quirky and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is more mystical.
I think both are good names. If either sounds better with the surname I would go with that. If popularity doesn’t worry you I would go with [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], but if popularity is an issue [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is a less used choice. Also to consider, [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is likely to be shortened to [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] or [name_u]Matty[/name_u], whereas [name_f]Freya[/name_f] will stay [name_f]Freya[/name_f]. Is that an issue for you?
Both options are nice. I don’t know any Matildas or Freyas. I do know of a [name_f]Mathilde[/name_f] from [name_f]France[/name_f]. I think that I prefer [name_f]Freya[/name_f] a bit more.
I like [name_f]Freya[/name_f] but I loooove [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] ([name_f]Tilly[/name_f] is OK but [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] is superb). So for that nn option - and assuming you’re not into [name_f]Tilda[/name_f] as the full name - then [name_f]Matilda[/name_f].
I prefer [name_f]Freya[/name_f]. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is pretty but in a down-to-earth way. [name_f]Freya[/name_f] sounds more free and summer-y to me.
Saw this a few days ago and didn’t reply because I like both names equally. I was curious so I did a tiny bit of research. To my surprise [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is the more popular choice in the United States (sitting at 181 in 2017 and rising). [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] was rising but has seemed to plateau and sits at #484. Interestingly in the UK [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is at #2 and [name_f]Freya[/name_f] is at 15. Being so popular in the UK, is an indicator that [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] may rise again in the US. I would hate to pick a name based on being less popular and five years later that name explode.
I feel like in this situation I wouldn’t look at the numbers because in lot of ways they are less far apart then 181 and 484. A lot could happen either name in five years. I honestly would take both names to the hospital and decide there.
@lightasafeather Unfortunately here in Australia [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is already very popular. I didn’t realise when we were discussing the name and it does give me pause for consideration but I can’t help but love it still.
[name_f]Freya[/name_f] is actually getting fairly popular here too, again something I didn’t realise initially. A bit of a shame as I think of it as such an unusual name.
Anyway, unless I come up with a more unusual name that my partner also likes (which is unlikely) it’ll be one of these!
Realistically, I think we’ll just have to decide at the hospital as currently I love both names equally.
Any more votes and opinions would be greatly appreciated! And suggestions of similar names you think I might like. Some I love that my partner doesn’t are Giselle, Olive, Sage, Tabitha, Ivy, Violet, Edie, India, Juniper, Leni, Zola, and Allegra.
