A little more info:
[name_m]Osiris[/name_m]: we think its apt for a baby born around [name_f]Easter[/name_f], as its namesake is the Egyptian god of Death & Resurrection. It’s definitely a rare name but not unheard of, there are MLB players and artists and musicians and models and holistic healers named [name_m]Osiris[/name_m], as well as an outer space camera and a NASA shuttle, and a small planet in the constellation Pegasus. We like the cheeky mythology connection to the girls ([name_f]Indira[/name_f] is a name for the Hindu goddess [name_f]Lakshmi[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is associated with the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f]).
[name_u]James[/name_u] is a family name for us. I don’t like it much but DH is very passionate about wanting to use it. There are lots of family members on his side with [name_u]James[/name_u] in their names, himself included. I have agreed we can use it, but it’s really jamming up my combo making.
The initials OJ would be no good since they have found new evidence & will shortly be reopening the case against OJ [name_m]Simpson[/name_m]. So we need something to break those names up. I would like it to be a nature related name to compliment the girls. After eliminating lots of choices for various reasons our remaining options at the moment are [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] & [name_u]Cedar[/name_u].
[name_u]Mercury[/name_u] appeals to us with the planetary connection, the ‘fleet footed’ association (since this guy has been ACTIVE) and the quicksilver elemental connection. It’s just such a quirky name, so soft sounding and interesting and fun to say aloud. It’s my husband’s favourite of the nature names. We have been told its “too much death” beside [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] because of its toxicity and because apparently the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] god [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] would escort souls to the underworld.
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] appeals to me for the LOTR connection (who doesn’t love [name_m]Pippin[/name_m]?), and the woodsy/sky feeling I get from it. And falcons are definitely some of the coolest birds out there. It doesn’t have the most meaning for us but it flows well [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I like the repetition of the Rs in [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] beside either [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] or [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m].
[name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is cool in writing but a bit more awkward aloud. I’m not as sure about that combo but I included it because I love the smell of [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] trees and DH associate Cedars with his grandmother’s property which is wooded. He says [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is feminine sounding though and that he prefers it for a girl. I think it might be too S heavy anyway with [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] & [name_u]James[/name_u].
Planning to take two combos to the hospital and then decide for sure once the baby is here. One combo will be Fox Mercury James. The other will be Osiris _____ James.
[name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is my favourite, closely followed by [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u]. I love them both. [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] would be good too, but my strongest association with it is the poison association. I didn’t immediately think of the planet. Maybe that’s just a location thing though.
I think [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is waaaay “s” heavy (take it from someone with many “s” sounds, it makes graduations difficult when people keeping tripping on your name and have to start over). As cool as [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] is, I think the flow of [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is beautiful.
I like the [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] combo best (I’ve loved it since you first asked about it a while back), and the [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] one next. [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is just so unbelievably cool!
I voted for the wrong one! I meant to vote for [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m].
My favorite is [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u], followed by [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. Although I still prefer [name_m]Fox[/name_m] for you.
I love [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] but I feel it doesn’t work that well with [name_m]Osiris[/name_m].
[name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is the best! For all the reasons you mentioned. And I do agree that [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is a little heavy on the s sound.
[name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] is the best! For all the reasons you mentioned. And I tend to agree that [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is a but heavy on the s sound. But I love [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] in the middle!
I 100% agree!
@easterbunny- good to know that’s what you associate [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] with right away. It is probably the last thing I think of, every time.
@shanadae123- thanks for the input, I have to agree with you about [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t love that combo as much out loud.
@tfzolghadr- yeah [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] does have a Rockstar vibe (probably because of [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] from [name_f]Queen[/name_f]). And YES that is what we tried to do with the girls names! We wanted them to have a fallback option in case their FNs were too out-there for them, and wanted something to compliment their names. I know astrology is kinda silly but I am a libra and have a bit of an obsession with balance. [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] definitely fits in with that pattern, but I don’t know how important that is since we already have [name_u]James[/name_u] as the grounder in the combination.
@katinka- thank you! Yes it is so cool! I love [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] so much. Soft and fluid sounding with so many cool nature and mythology connections. And DH really likes that combo too. I do worry it might be too Death related and weird for a real life, actual kid.
Okay here’s something I haven’t written on here yet… my husband’s middle name is [name_u]James[/name_u] but I mentioned before the name runs in his family. He had an uncle named [name_u]James[/name_u] who his family was very close with. He committed suicide about 10 years ago. [name_u]Corey[/name_u] wants to use [name_u]James[/name_u] in his memory. He told his dad at [name_u]Christmas[/name_u] that he wanted to use [name_u]James[/name_u] as a middle and his dad teared up, it was a very special moment for them. It’s an important name. That uncle had a son named [name_u]James[/name_u] junior (they went by [name_m]Jim[/name_m] & [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m]) and after [name_m]Jim[/name_m] died [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] would come to holiday dinners and stuff with my husband’s family. He also worked at the same place as my father-in-law. [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] committed suicide as well, 3 or 4 years ago due to mentail illness and it sent their whole family reeling. Especially [name_u]Corey[/name_u]'s dad who kind of shut down after that. Using [name_u]James[/name_u] will bring some of that back but hopefully will be healing for their family. So, there’s that. So much death! I feel like using [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] with James honours [name_m]Jim[/name_m] & [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] with the resurrection connection and ruling over death but I wonder if using [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] AS WELL starts to be too much or if it makes it even more like we’re reclaiming [name_u]James[/name_u] for the living, since I feeel like the elemental & mythological parts of [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] comment subtly on how fast life can be, how fluid and beautiful the divider is between life & death. I didn’t put all that on NB before because it’s kinda a lot of private information, and I knew random people would be all over it telling me what to do without really understanding our situation and intention. Is it wiser to use one or the other, Osiris OR Mercury? Or even in this particular situation is it OK using both together?
@esita- oh no! Which did you accidentally vote for?
@lovemysweeties- I love [name_m]Fox[/name_m] too. I feel like the imagery and the hard/soft sounds in [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] fit in better with our sibset, but [name_m]Fox[/name_m] does have meaning fir this pregnancy and is just such a cool name! It’s been on my list much longer than [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] has. But generally I prefer it as a middle name. DH really likes [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] the best so I’m obsessing over finding the perfect combination for [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] and then my aim is to take two finished combos that we absolutely love along to the hospital and see which one we choose in the moment.
One if those combinations for sure is [name_m]Fox[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. The other will be an [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] _______ [name_u]James[/name_u] combo, just not sure what one!
@emmamay- thanks for the input!
Like others have said, [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] is too much S for me. [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is my favorite, and I don’t think it’s too much death. It does make it more edgy than [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is also a great combo, and you really can’t go wrong with either one.
I think both [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] can relate since [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] brought the dead to the underworld, and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] means traveller (one of the things that [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] was the god of). They both also have an earthy quality to me. With [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], the element comes to mind first; [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] I associate with a number of animals/insects (and the daisy!).
I also have to say that after reading your last post, I get the feeling that you already have your choice. What you said about [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] was that it does fit with the girls’ names, but you feel that [name_u]James[/name_u] already gives that grounding element. You raved about the connections with [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] and how you and your husband both love it. I hope I’m not overstepping or putting words in your mouth, but it appears your heart has settled on [name_u]Mercury[/name_u], while the fears of being too much death is making your head go in the direction of [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m]. I say go with what you both love. Most people won’t know the middle anyways.
I generally agree to go with what your heart tells you, however, if you have constant doubts, no matter what anyone will tell you, they will most likely stick around even after you named the kid.
Usually, it’s not such a big deal if it’s a middle name but if the source of doubt is a sensitive topic, you should consider that you may never be completely doubt free…
Thank you @ottertails & @opheliaflora.
Its a tricky decision to make. I don’t want the entire name to be too much related to those family members and specifically their deaths. I want this baby to have his own identity and not just be named as a tribute. I know other people won’t know the middle names or the meaning/story behind them anyway but within our family (or more likely just in my own head) I think it matters.
I also want to be true to us, to our style and personality as parents (which, Mercury on its own fits our playful style much more than Peregrine but together with the other names might be too dark and ominous) and I don’t want to pass up a name that we really love for the wrong reasons just because I’m overthinking things or feeling hormonal.
I love [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u]. It flows so well and there’s just something so fantastic and unusual (yet grounded and classic because of [name_u]James[/name_u]) that the others are somehow missing. [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] would be my second choice.
And I have to say, Freyja [name_f]Moon[/name_f]?! Absolutely stunning!
Thank you! Definitely sad we probably won’t ever get to use it. Although, my 3 year old said to me the other day, “Mama, you’re going to have the tiny BOY baby soon. And THEN you’re gonna have a TINY tiny GIRL baby and they’re gonna put a needle in your back!” Which was really bizarre to me because as far as I know she has never heard of an epidural.
Well if by some chance your daughter is right, I think Freyja [name_f]Moon[/name_f] completes the family beautifully. It’s perfect. And LOL about the epidural. What a cutie.
I know, some of the things that come out of her mouth are hilarious.
[name_m]Fox[/name_m] [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] will probably win out, but of the choices to vote on I chose [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u].
[name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is the name of the second baby born on the Mayflower (when the Pilgrims came here from [name_f]England[/name_f]). This is the ancestor my family traces back to and means little wanderer. I also like the falcon connection.
Honestly, I like just [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] the best. I understand your reasoning with the OJ problem, but I don’t think most people will automatically associate his initials with OJ [name_m]Simpson[/name_m], unless you are calling him OJ all the time and bring it up. My younger sisters have no idea who OJ [name_m]Simpson[/name_m] even is. I associate [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] with nature already, due to his connection with the [name_u]Nile[/name_u] floodplain and the fertile land of [name_u]Egypt[/name_u], turning of the seasons, etc., but that could just be me. [name_u]James[/name_u] is just enough to balance out [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] but still keep the name earthy, handsome, and mythological. I am also not a fan of giving certain children different amounts of names, but again, that would be my preference, and not everyone would agree.
Out of the other three, though, I prefer [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] as another middle. I think [name_m]Osiris[/name_m] [name_u]Cedar[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] is rather hissy, and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] is great, but you have more of a connection to [name_u]Mercury[/name_u]. Good luck!
