So I am starting to really fall in love with Icelandic names! There are two that I would like your opinions on!
Vigdís- The name of Iceland’s first ever female president and Europe’s first ever female president, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir!
Bryndís- I think it seems fresh compared to Vigdís and can be shortened to [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] but I am not really into [name_u]Bryn[/name_u].
What are everyone else’s opinions!?
I think Bryndis is better, especially if you don’t live in Iceland or anywhere near Scandinavia. It’s less “weird” and much easier to pronounce than [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f], and also sounds much better… [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f] isn’t the most appealing name out there, out loud or on paper. But Bryndis is similar to a lot of other names, like [name_f]Brandy[/name_f] or [name_m]Brandeis[/name_m], so I think it’ll get better reception.
I think Bryndís is more usable in (I’m in [name_u]America[/name_u]). If I’m pronouncing it correctly. nn [name_u]Bryn[/name_u] is cute too.
Bryndís feels very brusque to me, I really dislike the [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]- sound.
Vigdís is a little lighter, though still quite clunky. It’s also quite a lot more used in Scandinavia.
Both of these are commonly spelled without the í, just with a normal i. Is there a particular reason you like the most complicated versions? These are already quite unusual and unwieldy names (I love those myself!) so I’m not sure it’s really the best choice to pick the most complicated versions.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] Disa would be my preference. Or maybe you like Vivil, Duva (Dúfa) or [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]?
My favourite Icelandic name is Sóley 
@dearest I think that I like the more complicated versions because my older sister lived in Iceland for quite some time and she is married to a guy from Iceland and they told me that this is how they would typically be spelt there. I love the name ”sta as well, with the accent mark, I think for me it seems more authentic! I do really like your suggestion of [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] and Sóley! They are absolutely beautiful in their own right!
Which is a perfectly good reason ^^ I was just curious I guess, I always wonder at people’s intentions when choosing Nordic names for their not-so-Nordic babies.
I think part of the reason is that I just love going to go and visit my sister, who lives in Norway, and I just learning all these different and appealing names. It has basically become a second home for me since my family goes and visits them very often!
Definitely Vigdís (but I’m probably biased because I adore not only [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f] but also [name_f]Vigga[/name_f]). I think it has a really beautiful aerial feel to it and while the -dis ending would be considered quite old-fashioned here in Denmark, I think Vig- adds a fresh quality to it. If you know [name_f]Ronja[/name_f] the Robber’s Daughter, [name_f]Ronja[/name_f] in the snow is my imagery of a [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f].
I don’t think Bryndís is a bad name per se (it’s the first time I’ve heard of it, I think), I just think Vig- complements the -dis ending better than [name_u]Bryn[/name_u]- (which makes it sound very old-fashioned to me). I love Brynja though.
I am currently looking at icelandic names because me and my partner are thinking of moving there.
I love both Bryndis and [name_f]Vigdis[/name_f]. They are both so strong sounding. I think the best thing about icelandic names is the strength of their girls names. My favourite name is [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] or Dagfinna and I also love [name_f]Soley[/name_f].
