I love both of these names so much but am trying to shorten my (long) list and need some help! Which name do you like best between [name]Genevieve[/name] and [name]Amelie[/name]? Is one more usable in [name]America[/name] than the other?
For [name]Amelie[/name] I really like the combo [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] but am having trouble coming up with an equally beautiful combo for [name]Genevieve[/name], any suggestions?
I love both names, and I think both would work equally well in [name]America[/name]. Possibly [name]Amelie[/name] would get more mispronunciations, but I don’t think it would be so terrible as to knock it out of contention.
[name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is perfect!
Hmm. . .names with [name]Genevieve[/name] that are French and (to me) similar to the names you’ve listed already.
Another vote for [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]! I know an [name]Amelie[/name] and I think it’s perfect…she’s told me she hasn’t had any problems with it pronunciation-wise.
As for [name]Genevieve[/name], I like it, but it kind of always reminds me of [name]Madeline[/name]'s dog from the children’s books. I like the nickname [name]Jenny[/name], though!
Well if you’re in an English-speaking country, I’d go with [name]Amelie[/name]. I’m assuming that you like the French pronunciation of [name]Genevieve[/name], but nobody will say that in the US. The English and French pronunciations have the same spelling. However [name]Amelie[/name], even while being similar to [name]Amelia[/name], doesn’t have an English pronunciation and will be easier for people to get used to.
Thanks for the replies so far! I am glad you guys like [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name]! I was worried there were too many “ee” sounds.
@lookingforaname- Thank you for the suggestions! Although they are all lovely names none of them are really sticking out for me the way [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] did. I don’t know if it’s because deep down I like [name]Amelie[/name] more or if it’s because I just haven’t found that perfect [name]Genevieve[/name] combo.
I like them both, but [name]Amelie[/name] seems more down to earth and approachable somehow. Like I’d expect [name]Genevieve[/name] to be this beautiful but distant show stopper, and [name]Amelie[/name] to be the cute (equally beautiful, in a different way) girl next door. [name]Genevieve[/name] is a bit trickier with the pronunciation as well, and might be shortened to [name]Jen[/name] or [name]Jenny[/name], which is lovely but very dated.
They are both beautiful and I feel received equally in [name]America[/name]. I pick [name]Genevieve[/name]. When I see [name]Amelie[/name] I think [name]Amelia[/name], so I have a feeling you might get a lot here (just like most Americans say [name]Sophia[/name] even when the child’s name is [name]Sophie[/name]). Are there any names in your family that could be used as a middle name. Maybe you will have a second daughter and be able to use both names.
I would say [name]Amelie[/name] - but the name really took of here in Australia after the film was released… so it now feels a little bit tired to me. Still gorgeous, though!
[name]Genevieve[/name] is really elegant and sophisticated but does lack the youthful spunkiness of [name]Amelie[/name]. It’s a touch choice. For now - I’ll just offer some combos…
If you decide on [name]Amelie[/name] - I think your choice of [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is perfect!
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] [name]Rose[/name]. [name]Amelie[/name] is also a beautiful name, but reminds me of the movie too much. And regarding which pronunciation you use, I actually know a girl here in [name]America[/name] who uses the French pronunciation. She is always having to correct people, but she only has to tell them once and they remember. She goes by [name]Geni[/name], pn ZHAHN-ee, which I think is pretty too.
They are both beautiful & I love French names the best!
I prefer [name]Genevieve[/name]. However, I would worry about a dated nn like [name]Jenny[/name].
[name]Amelie[/name] seems a bit more common to me because of the film and it’s resemblance to [name]Amelia[/name].
Thank you everyone for your comments! Looks like [name]Amelie[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] is winning, although most of you love both! I am still so torn. My biggest conscern with [name]Amelie[/name] is that I’m afraid she’ll get lost in a sea of Emilys and Amelias. [name]Do[/name] you think the pronunciation and vibe is different enough that she’ll stand out?
My biggest concern with [name]Genevieve[/name] is the nickname [name]Jenny[/name] which I agree is rather boring and dated. The only other nickname I have heard is [name]Evie[/name] which is sadly a no go as one of our close friends has a very young daughter called [name]Evelyn[/name] that goes almost exclusively by [name]Evie[/name]
@abelle- I love your suggestion of [name]Genevieve[/name] [name]Lucia[/name]- SO pretty! and your suggestion of [name]Frances[/name] reminded me of a name I love [name]Florence[/name], which I think sounds lovely with [name]Genevieve[/name]! [name]Genevieve[/name] [name]Florence[/name]- what do you guys think?
I like [name]Genevieve[/name] much better! The only problem I could spot was the “[name]Jen[/name]/[name]Jenny[/name]” nn issue. With this fix, I love this choice.
I also like [name]Amelie[/name], however. Can’t dis it. It’s a good choice too. [name]Just[/name] for me [name]Genevieve[/name] is more elegant, unusual, and – well – French. I like it with [name]Rose[/name], but I don’t think mns are the problem they have been presented as. It’s really easy to come up with something.
