Which is best?

Following on from my previous thread, we are stuck between two options for our girl: [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f].

We’ve trialled both and each name works, both first names go with our surname, they all have meaning to us and we love both options so to say we’re struggling is an understatement.

I thought I might try a different approach and see if other’s opinions provoke some sort of subconscious reaction from us so which do you prefer? Flow is also important so it may just boil down to which flows best if not.

This is baby #1 so we don’t have any sibling names to compare but we did have [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] picked as our boy name. [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] was also a strong contender for girl names. It’s likely we’ll use these names for any children we may have in the future.

ETA: [name_f]Violet[/name_f] pronounced as Vi-Oh-Let not Vi-Let.

Both are gorgeous so I understand your dilemma! Whichever you pick, your daughter will have a beautiful and meaningful name.

In terms of flow, to me [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] but [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] flows better than [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f], so they kind of come out neck and neck in my mind.

If it helps, I think they have slightly different feels when paired with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m]. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] feel vintage in a rustic, homely sort of way whereas [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] feel elegant and very grown up.

I completely love the combo of [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] but prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] to [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as a first name so personally would go with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f].

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps and good luck!

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] flows the best for me, and I think I like it best - though it’s a tough call. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] is so sweet in the middle. Honestly, either would be a beautiful combo and imo works with names like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] gives me a softer, shyer vibe, where [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] gives me a headstrong, artsy vibe.

Good luck choosing!

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] gets my vote.
Firstly, I adore [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] so any combo in which it gets used is a plus for me.
Secondly, I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] has the best flow of the two options.

What about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f]-- does this change your mind about [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as a fn? I think either [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] works well, but agree that [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a little shyer or more delicate than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. Maybe you should just wait until you meet her and see what her personality is like?

I think both are nice, however, I do prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] as I think the flow is much nicer.

*I really like the above suggestion of [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f]. I would also like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f].

We’ve considered [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and narrowed it down to these two. I have two middle names that are both pretty long so I’m aware of not having enough space on a form to fill it out… [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] takes up a lot more room than [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f]. It’s a small thing but also something that helped us to narrow down our options. We’ve no real concerns with [name_f]Violet[/name_f] being her first name either; we just love both names but find [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] works better than [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], for us.

Our little one is already here and currently nameless! We’ve trialled calling her both names as she seems to suit both although I do quite like the [name_u]Penny[/name_u] nickname on her. Obviously she won’t always be [name_u]Penny[/name_u] if we do go with [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. We’ve not had an urge to go with any particular nickname for [name_f]Violet[/name_f] yet.

If you ever come across the last thread I made then you’ll know why we want to keep [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] away from the first name spot haha!

I don’t like the shortened forms of [name_f]Felicity[/name_f].

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] because [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] are such common names. At least [name_f]Violet[/name_f]’s middle name would make her stand out with the less common [name_f]Felicity[/name_f].

Are you my MIL? lol. She’s made her feelings about the “common” Violet quite clear and she LOVES Felicity too.

The popularity of either name isn’t a concern of mine. I’ve worked with/around children for over 10 years and have never met a child called Violet or Penelope. Neither are “common” where I live. In fact, only two names come to mind when I think popular so charts and threads online don’t always apply to every area. MIL has stated she knows of two children called Violet, one being her friend’s granddaughter who was born a few weeks before ours, and I know of a Violet who must be in her seventies so out of the two, Penelope is probably the least popular here.

It’s unlikely that her middle name will be used in day to day life so I’m not sure if that will be the quality that makes her “stand out” either. That’s even if she wants to lol.

I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I’ve been loving the [name_u]Penny[/name_u] nickname lately, and [name_f]Nell[/name_f] is also cute. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] it a little harsh to me in sound and makes me think of the bratty character in [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] and the Chocolate Factory. I also don’t love the similarity to “violent” but that may be my accent. I like it as a middle though because I like the nature connection.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] is my choice. I think it might flow better as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

Thanks. I’ve never gotten violent from it personally but I’ve seen these associations mentioned quite a few times so you’re clearly not alone lol.

Switching the middle names wouldn’t be an issue. Thanks

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f] gets my vote for flow (and for the nickname possibilities).

I also like it better pairs with a future brother [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and for pairing more easily with future sister names. ([name_f]Penelope[/name_f] I think is less restrictive stylistically than [name_f]Violet[/name_f].)

Thank you. Hearing opinions on how they both sound with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is helpful because I’m 99. 9% sure we would still use it if we ever had a boy.

Whilst I don’t like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], I much prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as a first name over [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I think it’d be a shame to have [name_f]Violet[/name_f] hidden away in the middle.

I also think that [name_f]Violet[/name_f] & [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] would make beautiful siblings

I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f]. I love the positive meanings of [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_f]Cara[/name_f] coupled with the floral [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. The name feels light and happy to me, yet still substantial. Style-wise I prefer it with [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], and it feels easier to wear than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], too.

I like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] in theory, I love mythological names in general, yet something about it prevents me from liking it fully. I’m not really sure what it is - maybe the name looks a bit like “too much” written out, a bit too consonant-heavy, or it’s the “pene”-part putting me off, as in the Spanish word for male genitalia. I’m not crazy about [name_u]Penny[/name_u] or [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], but that’s kind of a stretch. [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] feels a tad boring to me as a combination; they’re both getting a lot of use right now, it feels predictable.

Good luck on deciding !!

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It’s really helpful to hear some unbiased opinions  xx

I love both, but I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Cara[/name_f].
