Neither name is to my personal tastes, however I much prefer the look of [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. It’s a full name. [name_m]Jack[/name_m] seems so short and informal - very nicknamey.

I adore [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], and [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] (this spelling), love [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]. [name_m]John[/name_m] is a family name. I have only known two Jacks (full name). When I was a child one of my mom’s friend had a husband named [name_m]Jack[/name_m] and I knew a baby [name_m]Jack[/name_m] a few years ago. I have never known a [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m] that went by [name_m]Jack[/name_m].

[name_m]Jack[/name_m] is my favorite name from your list of options, but sounds a bit choppy with last name [name_m]Declan[/name_m]. I like the idea of [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] called [name_m]Jonny[/name_m] or [name_m]Johnny[/name_m] (I have a good friend that goes solely by eithe [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] or [name_m]Jonny[/name_m], not [name_m]John[/name_m]). Still, I like how jovial and current [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is better than [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] and for me [name_m]Jack[/name_m] perfectly grows with your child. I think of [name_m]Jack[/name_m] from the Titanic movie and [name_m]Robert[/name_m] DeNiro’s character in Meet the Parents.

I prefer [name_m]Jack[/name_m] over [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], and you won’t avoid those nicknames. [name_m]Joel[/name_m] [name_m]Declan[/name_m] came to mind if you are exploring other options.

[name_m]Jack[/name_m] got my vote! I used to [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m], at one point, but for years I haven’t been able to get into him, unfortunately! It could be some of the Jonathans I’ve known; some of them have been more unsavory. Plus, I have known many more Jonathans than Jacks, so [name_m]Jack[/name_m] still feels fresh to me. I suppose you could do [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Jack[/name_m], too, if you wanted the best of both worlds? I’ve heard [name_m]Jack[/name_m] as a nn for [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] before…

Good luck!

Ok thanks guys … so hard! I have no idea now ha ha … if it weren’t for the possible shortening of “[name_m]John[/name_m]” I would probably pick [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] but then again I love [name_m]Jack[/name_m] … I will have to decide very soon! then again I know [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] who goes by [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] only and not [name_u]Alex[/name_u] or something, a [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] who goes by [name_m]Benny[/name_m] … so perhaps people wont shorten it to [name_m]John[/name_m] if we as parents don’t ?

You and [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] would correct anyone that tried. It is not anyone’s place to call someone another name. I have never experienced it. I know plenty of people that only go by their full names. Actually I know more people that go by their full names than a nickname.

that’s right… in fact both my children go by their full names and so do I and my husband!
