Which name do you like best and why?

So happy to finally join this group! We are currently expecting our first in about 9 weeks and don’t know the gender. We have a boy’s name selected (I think!) but I’m having doubts about our girl name… Husband loooves the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and has spoken about this particular name for ages. For some reason I am getting doubts now and thinking of other possible names. Here is my list and wondering opinions as we aren’t sharing with family or friends until birth. Typically I don’t look for others advice about something so personal, but I’m having a really tough time with this and don’t want to have any regrets!

Top 3 favourites are:
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_u]Emery[/name_u]
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] (not set on middle name)

Last name is 2 syllables and starts with a W.
Many thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your baby in the way!! Such an exciting time for you and your family ”!

I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f], but I actually don’t prefer one over the other. Based on that I would say go with [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] because it’s so sweet that that your husband loves it so much!

I also think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] is a beautiful name. Could give you the best of both worlds b/c you could call her either name depending on which you decide is the best fit.

Best of luck!!!

What are your doubts about [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is perfection–so adorable! [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] gives you the best of everything–cute on a child but still a proper, formal name for a grown woman.

[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is beautiful and an unexpected but fresh pairing. It’s elegant.

For some reason I don’t love [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_u]Emery[/name_u] as much.

First off, they’re all beautiful.

Why are you having doubts about [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is a truly gorgeous combo, a nice balance of old / new, unique and well known.
I also think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_u]Emery[/name_u] & [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] are both very sweet as well!

You can’t go wrong.

I would just wait till you meet her. Otherwise, if you love all three names, but your husband sounds quite set on [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], I would let him have his way, but only if you love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] as well. But if they’re just doubts, and not actually because you don’t love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], don’t second guess yourself!

I love each of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. All beautiful names, and it sounds like all would work well with your surname. I also love the combos of [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]. I would put something else with [name_f]Edith[/name_f] just because I don’t love [name_u]Emery[/name_u], but the sounds work fine. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] or [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] (or [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]?)

I’m really not much help here because I could see each of these 3 names working well and can’t see anything wrong with any of them. If I’m forced to put them in order of my preference: [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] then [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] - but that’s just personal and doesn’t mean I don’t like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] a lot.

I like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] the best. I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] will get misspelled a lot.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is smashing! I have long loved [name_f]Edith[/name_f], but I find [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] irresistible. As a pp said, though, you may just know her name when you meet her.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] would be beautiful.

I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is just gorgeous, and [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] makes for a lovely combo. Of the three, this one definitely gets my vote, by far.

What are your hesitations as to using [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]? One doesn’t come across many [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s - it’s uncommon, but recognised enough to be spelled and pronounced fairly easily. She’s got a great sound, a nice meaning (“bright, pure”) and a nice mythological association (associated with the moon).

Really like all three first names (love all names except Emery).

I have different associations with them:

Maeve - intense, scholarly, observant, bold
Edith - warm, smart, creative, introverted
Phoebe - happy, balanced, intuitive, light

These days, I’m really drawn to Phoebe.

Some ideas:

Maeve Odessa (think Odette is too blunt after Maeve)
Maeve Josephine
Edith Eloise
Edith Jessamine/ Seraphine
Phoebe Harriet/ Odette

I love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]! It’s beautiful!!

I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and if it is up for discussion, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is my favourite combination.

I absolutely adore [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]! Gorgeous combo. The sound, the almost fairytale feel while still being familar/oh so wearable. This is my favorite for sure.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] would be my second choice.

I really like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] but I’m also not sure about [name_f]Odette[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and I honestly think it would be a brilliant choice either way. I personally would go for [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]. [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] or [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] could also work!

I think [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] is probably the name for you, but it’s normal to have doubts right before the big moment! Go with the name you’ve loved the longest, because you will probably continue to love it the longest.

For what it’s worth, my favorite idea from your set is [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f].

I absolutely love all three of these names, for different reasons.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]: This name is so sweetly vintage, but it also has substance thanks to [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]'s status as a classic and the numerous fantastic namesakes for [name_f]Harriet[/name_f].
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_u]Emery[/name_u]: Swoon! [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is so lovely, and paired with the bold [name_u]Emery[/name_u], it becomes absolutely striking. As an alliteration fan, I am enthralled!
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]: I’ve noticed that you’re a fan of the “-et” sounding names in the middle, and I am too. [name_f]Odette[/name_f] is a vintage charmer, and [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] looks poised to become a modern classic. If you’re not set on the middle, what about [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] or [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]?
Overall, my favorite for you is still [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f], since it’s the name you’ve loved for the longest and it seems to suit all the hallmarks of your style: Sweetness, vintage quirk, and the “-et” middle. It might be helpful if you shared your specific concerns with the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], as that could change my answer and recommendations. Best of luck!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] everyone, I cannot thank you enough for all your amazing, well-thought out and positive responses to our name choices. You have certainly confirmed that [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] is the name for us, and my husband cannot be more thrilled! The name encapsulates so much of what we are looking for: a vintage, sweet, established name but one that is still unique and fun! Thank you, thank you! We still love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and I appreciate the ideas of making [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] a middle name for [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but will reserve this name for the future if we need it!

I know this is the ‘girls names’ forum, but now that you know our style and girl name preferences, I’d like to share our boy name as well in case there are any suggestions. Our (recently) chosen boy name is [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]. We love that [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] is an old classic, but underused name and adore the nickname “Roo” on a little boy. We have no connection to the name [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], but we like how it sounds with [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and appreciate it being 3 syllables and underused.

Many thanks again to everyone!

I love [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]! There’s so much vintage charm, but it still sounds like a modern name. [name_f]Maeve[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f] would be my second choice.

I know it’s a girl forum, but I can’t resist replying to your boy name: I adore [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], ‘Roo’ - fantastic name. As with any name I love I’m always surprised there aren’t a lot more Ruperts!
