Which name do you prefer?

I am debating between 2 boy names with 8 weeks left to go before our first baby arrives. So I’m turning to you for help!

For the first 25 weeks of our pregnancy, we were pretty set on the name [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. [name_m]Idris[/name_m] for its origin (my family is Welsh) and for its beautiful mythological meaning. [name_m]Ian[/name_m] is my dad’s name. I don’t have any nicknames for [name_m]Idris[/name_m], but also don’t think it needs one or we will let one evolve naturally.

A few weeks ago we came across the name [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and surprisingly adore it! Nickname could be Ru/ Roo or just call him [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. We love how it is a classic, underused name with a fun vintage feel to it. Middle name we would pair with it is [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], just because we like the pairing and have had positive feedback about this name on this forum and now my husband absolutely loves it.

I am so back and forth between both of these names. They both have a different feel to them, but both work nicely with our surname. We live in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] and neither of these names are common, but heard of.
Please help! Many thanks.

Honestly, I prefer the name [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. However, I think it is important for a name to have meaning and it seems [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] has more meaning to you. I like to picture my child asking me to they got their name and whichever story makes me feel the most pride, that is the winner.
I think [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] would be nice too. If you can’t walk away from [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] but still want to honor your dad.
Good luck.

I absolutely adore [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], so my vote goes to it.

I like both, but [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] is much more distinctive. [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] is slightly twee to me.

I prefer [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] because it has more meaning and significance.

As you say, they are both very different names, so I would wait to meet your little one and see which one seems to fit him better.

I also prefer [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m].

I love [name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]. Tastes on this forum tend to be style over substance; please don’t let that sway you.

As s mum to a Canadian [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] myself, I am biased… but I love [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] better than [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]. [name_m]Idris[/name_m] is awesome and love that it has roots in your heritage, too! You really can’t go wrong with either!

I like them both… If I were choosing for my boy however I would use [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] for personal taste and meaning. But for you I don’t know… They’re quite different. Perhaps take them both on little slips of paper to his birt h and see what suits him better because Ru & [name_m]Idris[/name_m] are solo different he may clearly be one and not the other.

[name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] - love the sound, meaning and uniqueness

Second choice would be [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m]

[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]- names are almost too similar stylistically to be in the same name imo. Seems over the top

But I agree with others that you should leave both on the table and see what suits him once you meet.

Thanks everyone for their input. Gives me some things to mull over some more. [name_u]Baby[/name_u] naming is hard! I am trying to envision a little boy and a grown adult with both names and it’s not easy. I don’t trust that I will know which name to go with once I meet him.
If there are any other thoughts I’d be happy to hear them. Thanks again!

I love [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. Almost used it myself. But that’s totally my preference. I would take both to the hospital

These are both lovely names. I’m leaning toward [name_m]Rupert[/name_m], only because I don’t care for [name_m]Ian[/name_m] as the middle for [name_m]Idris[/name_m]. Objectively I like [name_m]Idris[/name_m] just slightly better, but the overall combo of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m] is just so fantastic.

I also like the idea of [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Idris[/name_m]/[name_m]Idris[/name_m] [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]/[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Ian[/name_m] but you sound pretty settled on your specific combos.

In the end go with what means the most to you/you love the most. And don’t sweat it if you aren’t sure going into the delivery room.

I do love [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Barnaby[/name_m], it’s so sweet! And [name_m]Idris[/name_m] is very pretty. I agree with the others that you should go with what has more meaning to you or whatever you feel suits him best. I hope you post an update with what you choose!
