[name_f]My[/name_f] friend needs some help on deciding on a name but she’s too shy to post here, so she asked me to help her out.
She’s stuck between [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] and [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] (yas-min). This is her first baby and she keeps going back and forth on these two names.
Both are sweet, but I prefer [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]! It has a distinct sound and feels really timeless. [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] is pretty, but I could see it getting misspelled a lot and it does feel a tad bit dated to me.
She can’t go wrong with either name, they’re both sweet but with a little spunk in them.
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] has the advantage of many built-in nicknames as well as being a timeless classic
[name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] is more unique (at least in my country) but still familiar enough that no one is going to raise any eyebrows. The only miniscule downside for [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] is that people might be more inclined to spell it [name_f]Yasmin[/name_f] (which is just as pretty!). Don’t think this is a reason to not choose [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f], as there are people out there who will mispronounce any name no matter how well known (I had a teacher who pronounced [name_u]Joe[/name_u] as Yo)
As for my taste, I’d go for [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] (maybe [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] Yasmine?)
I like both but prefer [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] over all!
[name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] is whimsical, stylish and intriguing; [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is solid, classic and strong.
She can’t go wrong, but I guess it depends whether she wants something classic, strong and versatile (Victoria), or something a little more distinctive and floral (Yasmine)
Much prefer [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f]. I can see why people would describe [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as a classic and on paper it is, really - an old, regal name. But in my lifetime it’s tied to the 80s / early 90s when there was a [name_f]Victoriana[/name_f] revival and it therefore feels dated to me. [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] treads a perfect line between being very known and recogniseable but also underrused and uncommon (at least where I’m from). I also find it very pretty.
I really love both, but probably [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]. It’s a classic, beautiful, elegant name that you really can’t go wrong with.
As for [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f], I know two girls with this name and they are both sweet and funny and awesome, but I do feel like a lot of people would either spell it wrong or mistake it for [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f].
Both are e beautiful and I don’t think she can go wrong either way! I prefer the classic [name_f]Victoria[/name_f]. I agree with others that it is timeless and beautiful. Plus, if your friend is someone who likes nicknames, or if her daughter wants one someday, I think [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] offers a few more options!
Congratulations to your friend, and I hope this helps!
Personally [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is super super common where I am, so it feels just a little… boring? When I meet a [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], it just gets filed in my brain as “Oh, just another Victoria” (plus I personally find the name a little harsh, but that’s just me). It just to me is a very “blend in the background” kind of name, but it’s fine.
I find [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] really beautiful, memorable, distinctive, and alluring. So that gets my vote.
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f] is more my personal style but both are pretty. If she doesn’t have a middle name in mind, [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] goes great together (or vice versa, [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] Victoria).
[name_m]Just[/name_m] to add, I’d advise your friend to consider whether she is happy with [name_f]Vicky[/name_f], which I think is pretty inevitable. I personally really dislike this.
I don’t think we can control / choose nicknames, unfortunately, unless the baby is introduced to everyone as if the nickname is their actual name. In my experience people will do it whether you like it or not. It’s why I personally exed lots of beautiful El-names from my list (didn’t want Ellie). Which is why I’d advise to anyone to avoid giving a name where you dislike the established / intuitive nickname. If she doesn’t mind it then it’s a non-issue.
I have a long name, and there’s two “clear” nicknames for it — one my mom (and I) hate, and whenever people would go to call me that, I or she would just correct them. Sometimes it’s that simple. But I do understand what you mean. I don’t know if my friend cares about [name_f]Vicky[/name_f] or not, honestly. I guess, at the end of the day, once the baby is older she can be the judge on what nicknames she likes and doesn’t like
Of the two I’d probably choose [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] - though I would spell it [name_f]Yasmin[/name_f] which I find more tailored and chic (while [name_f]Yasmine[/name_f] would likely get people asking if it’s Yas-meen - even with the [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] flower; I don’t think the E is needed). I like [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] but I prefer it in second spot so it is always said in full.
