Which names do you not like?

Hello!
I’ve made a handful of posts asking about combos and favourites, but this time I’m looking to really cut my list. Which of these names do you NOT like and why? Be brutal! My list is much too long for my liking :joy:

Philippa
Jane
Ismay/Esme (I’m team Es, my wife’s team Is, we can’t choose!)
Daisy
Effie
Vision (thanks @snowmaiden !)
Persephone
Cordelia
Mavis
Pax
Hermione
Genevieve
Ginny

Feel free to rank them too!

Thanks again! xx

[name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite:

[name_u]Pax[/name_u] - I like this name, but not particularly for a girl. It sounds a little too masculine for me

[name_f]Ismay[/name_f] - Cute, but would be easily confused for the (cuter) [name_u]Esme[/name_u] imo

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - [name_f]Pretty[/name_f], but a little bit over the top imo

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] - Does not roll off the tongue easily, and a little outdated

Total ranking (from my favorite to least favorite)

  1. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
  4. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
  5. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
  6. [name_f]Effie[/name_f]
  7. [name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
  8. [name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
  9. [name_u]Vision[/name_u]
  10. [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]
  11. [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
  12. [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
  13. [name_u]Pax[/name_u]

if i’m being harsher than i normally would (i will preface this by saying i overall love your list though !!)

philippa - i just find the “phil” sound really unappealing, and every philippa i’ve ever met had wished they were ‘just’ pippa
effie - sounds too much like ‘effing’
vision - i just don’t get this unfortunately - it’s not an attractive word to me, i don’t really get the meaning, and i’m not a fan of the sounds (vis just isn’t for me). i can only think of contact lenses

everything else on your list i either really like or adore

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there! I like a lot of your names. The ones I don’t like:

  1. [name_f]Effie[/name_f]- I agree it sounds like “effing”. That’s all I think of.
  2. Vision-Too out there for me. But that is just my personal opinion.
  3. [name_f]Ismay[/name_f]- I much prefer (and love) [name_u]Esme[/name_u].
  4. [name_u]Pax[/name_u]- I agree it screams “boy” to me, although I know that is in these days.
  5. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]- I can ONLY think of [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].

[name_f]Effie[/name_f] and [name_u]Vision[/name_u] are the only ones I really dislike. The rest I enjoy:)

[name_f]My[/name_f] least favorite from the list is definitely [name_u]Pax[/name_u]!
Ranked from favorite to least favorite:
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_u]Vision[/name_u]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_u]Esme[/name_u]
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f]
[name_u]Pax[/name_u]

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this could help

Philippa. Sounds extremely ungraceful from my own perspective due to all the “p” sounds (phil/-ppa) making it too much for some reason. Also sounds like a forced feminisation of Philip for me. Pippa isn’t great too (it means something bad in my language)

The other ones are fine.

If I would have to get rid of something I d’say Vision, it is not bad (actually cool) but too much for a IRL child as a first name (as a middle it is great) in my opinion.

Also Persephone. I don’t like the PH in it that unbalances the name and I feel like the meaning is a bit bad (bringer of death) and meh the story of a girl who gets kidnapped from her uncle and forced to get married is not the most happy of the associations. If I had to choose a mythological character with a better association I d’say Minerva, Diana, or Circe (who I say they fit your style too)

[name_u]Love[/name_u]

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (I’m the PJ = peej = [name_f]Peach[/name_f] fan) Ismay/Esme (there’s a whole thread on this debate - not sure yours:)) [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] (would probably use [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] myself but it’s a very pretty name)

Like
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] (so many good nicknames too)
Don’t like [name_f]Effie[/name_f] but I suggested [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] as a longer version for it - which you could also shorted to [name_u]Percy[/name_u], [name_f]Perrie[/name_f] or Sephie. [name_u]Vision[/name_u] (too harsh for me) [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] - love “old lady” names but better ones out there, I think (eg [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], Maeve) [name_u]Pax[/name_u] - [name_f]Angelina[/name_f] [name_f]Jolie[/name_f] baby in my mind and doesn’t go with other names
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f] - only because it doesn’t sound appealing in my accent and [name_m]Forrest[/name_m] Gump put final nail in coffin for me

The only one I dislike is [name_u]Pax[/name_u], which feels more masculine, but I don’t love it for boys either lol.
The rest of your list is great! But if I’m being honest, I might also cut:

[name_u]Vision[/name_u] – I just think this is a bit too wordy for real life use, what if the child wears glasses?
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] – I like it in theory, but the rest of your list is much cooler! I also adore the nn “Pippa” much more.
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f] – Nothing wrong with this name, just a bit clunky for my taste!

I think [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is a nice name, but it does feel a bit more “simple” to me than [name_f]Jane[/name_f], which I adore! [name_f]Jane[/name_f] packs a punch in only 4 letters, so this leads me to place [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] more towards the bottom.

If I had to rank my favorites after this, it would be:

1 [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] :purple_heart:
2 [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
3 Ismay/Esme
4 [name_f]Jane[/name_f] / [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] tied!
5 [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
6 [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] (which could also have nn Ginny!)
7 [name_f]Effie[/name_f]

[name_f]Effie[/name_f] - It is nice as a nickname, but not as a full name. It sounds incomplete + I cannot let go of the Eff sound in the beginning.

[name_f]Ismay[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Ismene[/name_f], and I like [name_u]Esme[/name_u], but I really don’t like this spelling. Sorry!

Ranking:

  1. [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]
  3. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
  4. [name_u]Esme[/name_u]
  5. [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
  6. [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
  7. [name_u]Vision[/name_u]
  8. [name_u]Pax[/name_u]
  9. [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
  10. [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]

I’m not a big fan of:

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - too [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] for me which just is not the vibe. Maybe if I had another association, it would be fine, but just at the moment, it’s unfortunately too tied to that one thing.

[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - one I go back and forth on - sometimes, it’s charming and strong. Other times, it feels a bit lacking in shine

[name_u]Pax[/name_u] - one I love as a middle but as a first, for a girl at least, it feels a bit like Tampax :person_shrugging:

@winterlyricalfox Thanks! I agree about [name_u]Esme[/name_u]

@Nameberry1038 Thank you!

@rosepip Thanks! Didn’t think of that for [name_f]Effie[/name_f] :grimacing:

@sara120 Thanks! I can’t really get past HP for [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] either…

@heartwings Thanks! I didn’t know the meaning of [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] :grimacing:. I do love [name_f]Diana[/name_f] and [name_f]Circe[/name_f] though.

@EloiseT PEACH PEACH PEACH!!!

@VioletMoon Thank you! I doubt we’d use [name_u]Vision[/name_u] in the end, but it would definitely be unfortunate if we did and she needed glasses…

@AStudyIn_Scarlet Thank you!

@Greyblue Thanks! I didn’t think of Tampax :rofl::rofl:

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] - It’s not terrible, it’s just not a favorite of mine.
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] - Always lovely and classic. I automatically think of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Bennett[/name_u] in Pride and Prejudice, all sweetness and positivity.
Ismay/Esme - I prefer [name_u]Esme[/name_u] and think it’s a lovely name. [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] looks to me like someone trying to be kre@tiv with [name_u]Esme[/name_u].
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - Adorable and sweet
[name_f]Effie[/name_f] - Cute, but I prefer it as a nickname for something more substantial on the birth certificate.
[name_u]Vision[/name_u] - This would make a cool middle name. I can’t see calling someone this.
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - [name_f]Gorgeous[/name_f] name. I wouldn’t let the meaning bother me. All the Mallorys survived just fine.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - [name_f]Gorgeous[/name_f] name along the same lines as [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f] - I automatically think of [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] the vampire from Hotel Transylvania, but that’s because I have kids. She’s a great character, so it’s not a bad association. I like it!
[name_u]Pax[/name_u] - It feels abrupt. I can see it as a NN.
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] - I love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] when pronounced the [name_u]French[/name_u] way. Otherwise, it’s just meh.
[name_f]Ginny[/name_f] - Ditto [name_f]Effie[/name_f].

[name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ismay[/name_f]
If its Ez Me then i dislike that, but if its Ez [name_f]May[/name_f] i dont
[name_f]Effie[/name_f]
[name_u]Vision[/name_u]
[name_f]Geneieve[/name_f] (cant spell this rigjt or say it )

[name_f]Ginny[/name_f]
[name_u]Pax[/name_u] (on a girl)
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mavis[/name_f] (too hotel transylvania for me)

[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is fine i guess. 100% too linked to HP. people will ask oh like harry potter etc

Im not sure how to say [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I say it like [name_m]Per[/name_m] son oh fee. Which is probably wrong

I only like [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]. You can call her “Ginny” or “Evie”

It’s per sef un knee

[name_u]Pax[/name_u] reminds me of Tampax…

If I’m being brutal - I think [name_u]Vision[/name_u] is really quite bad. At some point she’s going to have to wear glasses and it will all become some big joke she’ll hate!

And I would recommend watching Skins, where the main character is called [name_f]Effie[/name_f] and does loads of illicit substances from a young age. She was who came to mind first when I read that name!

I like [name_f]Daisy[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] and [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] best. [name_u]Esme[/name_u] is fine but [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] seems quite prissy to me. And she’ll go mad trying to get people to spell it right.

Oh

I definitely wouldn’t use:

Vision: I think this could theoretically work as a middle name, but realistically it’s too out there for a first name imo. I feel like certain unusual word names can work, but Vision has a somewhat harsh sound that makes it not super name-y sounding, especially for a girl, and has a lot of teasing potential

Pax: Tbh this has never felt like a name to me, sounds kind of scientific and makes me think of Paxlovid the Covid drug

I’m also not a huge fan of:

Effie: As others have said it’s always made me think of the “f word”

Persephone: I’ve never quite seen the appeal, it feels clunky and not particularly nice-sounding

Hermione: Others may disagree but I personally feel like it isn’t really useable because of the Harry Potter association unfortunately, I feel like most people would assume she was named after the character since it’s a very distinctive name and there are virtually no other associations for most people, even if that’s not your intention

Otherwise I like all you other choices

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I’ll rank my favorite to least favorite-

Daisy-It’s perfect. I love it. Definitely don’t not like it! It’s just impossible to say without a smile, vintage, feminine & has lovely floral imagery.

Jane-It’s simple & sleek & smart and classic. [name_f]Janie[/name_f] is a cute natural nn. It’s well known but not too over done.

Ismay/Esme-I don’t like [name_f]Ismay[/name_f] at all, but [name_u]Esme[/name_u] is a stunner. Reminds me of a star and fairies, but in a bright slightly electric way.

Ginny-This is tough to decide whether or not I like it, because I think that it’s darling as a nn to [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] or [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] (or [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], but I find [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] snooty), but it’s too nick-name-y on its own.

Cordelia-Sometimes I find this romantic & pretty & interesting. But I also just see/hear the word ‘cord’ very loudly, & that’s not super attractive. I do like just [name_f]Delia[/name_f] & just [name_f]Cora[/name_f]. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f].

Mavis-I love [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], but something about this reads old mean librarian to me.

Philippa-I can see the appeal of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], but [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] is kind of hard to say.

Effie-I can see the appeal of this…but definitely better as a nn. Not sure what for though.

Persephone-I should like this. I love [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. But I don’t like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] & this reminds me more of that.

Genevieve-I love [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Aviva[/name_f], Vivian…lots of names similar to [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], but just don’t love this at all.

Hermione-All I can think of is hermit crab.

[name_u]Vision[/name_u] (thanks @snowmaiden !)-I think it’s okay as a middle name, but maybe too much as a first.

Pax-I like the meaning, but nothing about this screams feminine name to me. It barely screams name. I don’t like it for a boy either, even though I love [name_u]Max[/name_u], so go figure.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
