Sometimes you see a name that seems pretty, when you see them on the forum or elsewhere. However when you actually say them in your head or aloud they do not quite live up to expectations.
For me such a name is for example [name_f]Nerina[/name_f], it contains pretty much every letter I’m keen on but it does absolutely nothing for me when I even pronounce it in my head.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys have these kinds of experiences as well with certain names?
So many names are like this for me. But right now I can’t really think of many. Lol, I’ll come back when I have more
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u], [name_f]Ianthe[/name_f], [name_m]Cyprian[/name_m], [name_f]Minta[/name_f], etc. All so beautiful on paper, but less-than-stellar aloud.
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]. I think it looks stunning- ethereal and delicate, yet substantial. Yet… When I say it, something just feels off. It reminds me of watercress.
[name_f]Oriole[/name_f]. Again, I think it looks really beautiful, but it sounds a bit like L’[name_f]Oreal[/name_f] or cereal when I say it.
[name_f]Nerida[/name_f]. It looks beautiful and I really want to like it. It isn’t even that it sounds off. I just can’t love it yet. It is also a brand of tea (Nerada), so that probably doesn’t help.
[name_f]Pomme[/name_f]. I love the way it looks, but it sounds too close to pong, and it is very close to a slang word for a British person.
[name_f]Odette[/name_f] / [name_f]Odetta[/name_f]. Again, I think it looks really lovely. But… It is Odd, with an ette on the end. That, and Detta was a nasty character in the Dark [name_m]Tower[/name_m] series, so I still have that association.
Sorry if I offended anyone, this is just personal preference.

[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]- I don’t know. I want to love it- I really do. It is vowel heavy, has a ‘Th’ beginning and the nn [name_f]Lassie[/name_f] is very sweet. But I just can’t. Maybe I will love it one day. I can see it on a beautiful Latina screen siren, but not on a baby.
[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]/[name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] - [name_m]Both[/name_m] such pretty names, and yet I can’t pronounce either without laughing at my efforts.
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] - I still like this when pronounced, but not half as much as when written. Being down South, it sounds remarkably similar to “See ya”, which I say a lot.
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u] - Written, this reminds me of mediaeval knights : ) [name_m]Said[/name_m], it sounds so contemporary and trendy.
Ones I agree with:
[name_f]Ariadne[/name_f] (I dislike the air sound)
[name_m]Cyprian[/name_m] (Something’s just off with the sound)
[name_f]Thalassa[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassia[/name_f] (I’m exactly the same with pronunciation)
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
And now mine:
[name_f]Elysia[/name_f] (Double ee sound puts me off)
[name_f]Alcyone[/name_f] (See above)
[name_f]Euphemia[/name_f]
[name_f]Xenia[/name_f] (See [name_f]Elysia[/name_f])
[name_f]Calixta[/name_f] (Sounds like Clix-ta when I say it)
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] (Can’t get over the ‘sh’ sound)
[name_f]Valeria[/name_f] (Could sound like a [name_m]Roman[/name_m] building with the wrong stresses)
[name_f]Berenice[/name_f]
Hespera
[name_f]Orlaith[/name_f]
[name_f]Eos[/name_f]
[name_u]Orion[/name_u]
Philon
[name_m]Xanthus[/name_m]
[name_m]Ephraim[/name_m] (Depending on pronunciation)
[name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
Good news; it’s not pronounced like that It’s more like ‘[name_m]AH[/name_m]-ree-ATH-nee’ (‘th’ like in the word ‘the’) but even our basic pronunciation of ‘ARRY-ad-nee’ is closer to that than the ‘air’ one.
I have an opposite one. I love the sound of the name phonetically described as ‘NIGH-ree’ but seeing it on paper as Ngaere is a tad off putting It’s still beautiful though.
[name_f]Ceridwen[/name_f] - I’m not sure how I feel about its pronunciation…
[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f] - there’s nothing wrong with [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] sounds close to another word in my native tongue.
[name_m]Uriah[/name_m]
Blandina - kinda…
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] - I dislike -pee ending
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - see above
[name_m]Icarus[/name_m]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], hands down. It’s a lovely looking name with wonderful history, I should like it but that repeating ee-ee sound is just nails on a chalkboard to me.
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]-It just sounds very boring to me.
I totally agree with this. In fact, any name with a double ‘r’ sound I struggle with. I work with a guy called [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and I actually have to consciously think about it every time I say his name.
I feel the same way about [name_f]Cassia[/name_f]!
Other names that I really like in print but am not smitten with out loud for some reason or other:
[name_f]Leonie[/name_f]-The most frustrating one because it’s one of my favorites! It just sounds so strange and clumsy to me when I say it.
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]-Same as with [name_f]Leonie[/name_f].
[name_m]Ezekiel[/name_m]-Sounds like I’m struggling.
[name_m]Bastien[/name_m]-The only way I like it pronounced is the [name_m]French[/name_m] way but I don’t speak [name_m]French[/name_m] regularly.
[name_m]Lucien[/name_m]- Really like it but can only think and hear “[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]” when I say it out loud.
