If you are going to call him [name_u]Jody[/name_u], I would use [name_u]Jody[/name_u].
I would go with either [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] or [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] just in case he decides to go by J.D. or [name_u]James[/name_u]/[name_m]Jonah[/name_m] when he’s older. I think it provides more options for him and covers all the bases.
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] is nice, but I’m a fan if naming the child what he will be called. [name_m]Just[/name_m] name him [name_u]Jody[/name_u].
Yeah, see, this is what I was thinking - if he doesn’t like having a unisex name or a nickname-sounding name when he grows up, he has other options.
I also get this, and I really do like [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] on its own merits - both names are meaningful to us and I think it sounds great! But [name_u]James[/name_u] is so common (#9 now, and also in the top 10 or even 3-5 for most of the past century) that I feel like if we gave him that name, a nickname would help to distinguish him, and sure it could be [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] but why not a name we like even more? Unless [name_u]Jody[/name_u] is too much of a stretch from that…I don’t know!
I love [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u], but I like [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] too, and I think [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] D. makes more sense to get to [name_u]Jody[/name_u]. Very clever!
I love [name_u]Jody[/name_u] but I had to give it up when a [name_f]Marine[/name_f] told me about “[name_u]Jody[/name_u]”. Not sure if you’re American but if there’s any chance that your son ever joins or works with/near the U.S. military, his life will be easier if [name_u]Jody[/name_u] is not his legal name.
Being called “[name_u]Jody[/name_u]” is slur. [name_u]Jody[/name_u] is either a coward who was too afraid to enlist or a guy who wasn’t strong enough/medically fit to be a soldier. He stays at home while the “real men” defend our country. [name_u]Jody[/name_u] sneaks around with the soldiers’ women while they’re deployed. They have chants about being eager to get home so they can kick [name_u]Jody[/name_u]'s butt
If I had to choose a longer version, I’d pick [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u]. But I’d just call him [name_u]Jody[/name_u] if that’s what you love most.
Thanks! That’s helpful feedback.
Yeah, someone told me that on another thread. I’m not really worried about it - we’re yuppy types and don’t know any military folks. I kind of object to the premise of that whole idea, to be honest, so I don’t want to let it control my name choices. On the other hand, I guess the possible association is an argument for giving him a full name separate from the nickname.
It’s complicated, because it’s more like I love both [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] AND [name_u]Jody[/name_u], and just think that the former would need a nickname and the latter might need a formal name, so why not kill two birds with one stone?! But then I think it’s a stretch, so [name_m]Jonah[/name_m] [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] is sort of a compromise between the two. But I’m torn, so all feedback is helpful!
