I like [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m]. [name_m]Lem[/name_m] would be an adorable nn.

Btw, I just have to say I love your names, [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] is wonderful. It’s so refreshing to see a list that’s not full of the same eight names.

Thank you so much! His nn is [name_m]Archie[/name_m]. And [name_m]Lem[/name_m] would be a very cute nn! I also like [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] as a nn though it’s a little more of a stretch.

My partner and I are fond of older names and like many that have references to historical figures, mathematicians, astonomers, etc.

I wish we agreed on girl names more though. They always seem to be a point of debate, but with boys we are completely on the same page!

[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] for sure, especially with sibling [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] spelled traditionally. Cool taste in names!

Thanks for your input! I feel like I was worried over the silent P for nothing now. [name_m]Just[/name_m] asked my partner to and he prefers [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] as well.

Additional questions, does [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] sound alright with [name_m]Franklin[/name_m]? We are firm on [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] as the middle name, but are keeping first name options flexible for now since we aren’t having another baby right away.

I like it spelled [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m], and [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] is a great combo! [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] and [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] make a great sibset!

I’m glad someone else thinks so! Our top three right now are [name_m]Belvedere[/name_m] / [name_m]Belvidere[/name_m], [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m], and [name_u]Winslow[/name_u]. (My partner said he’s favoring [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] over [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] now, but I think [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] sounds better than [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], and [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] is definitely sticking as the middle name.)

I think most people are familiar enough with [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] that the silent P won’t be an issue. Honestly, I would have had a harder time pronouncing Tolomei because I wouldn’t have seen the connection right away.

By the way, I love the theme you’re going with! I was especially happy to see [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] in your signature. I think you have a winner with [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], and also I think you’ll do equally well with any children you have in the future.

Thank you! I really am loving it, but I feel torn because I do love some of the other names on our list as well. With the exception of the off chance of twins, we plan to only have two children, so the next baby, boy or girl, is my last.

I’m so glad you noticed [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f]! Right now we’re unsure if we’ll use it as a first or middle name, since everyone we talk to seems to pronounce [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] differently. If we do use it in the middle, we’ll likely do two middle names like I have (we like the combo of [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] and [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f], either as a first and middle, or as two middles with a different first name.) Originally we were going to go with [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], but it feels like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is seeing a major surge in popularity among those who like [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for a nn but have become tired of [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f].[SUB][/SUB]

I guess there’s a little more pressure knowing that you won’t have another chance to use all the other names you love! I am partial to [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] for the same reasons I like [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] and [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f], but [name_m]Belvedere[/name_m] is cool too as it reminds me of a print by Escher. I also love [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], and it can be easily feminized to [name_f]Galilea[/name_f] if you’re looking for more girls’ names to consider!

Hm, I’ve always heard high-PAY-sha, but looking into it, I think that may be more of an American pronunciation, and the traditional Greek pronunciation is something like hi-[name_u]PAT[/name_u]-ee-ah or hip-ah-TEE-ah. I could see how it might pose a problem if you prefer a pronunciation that is less common where you live.

Also, I think [name_f]El[/name_f]- names in general are all experiencing that kind of surge. [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] seems like it’s going to be the new [name_f]Emma[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] is a lovely, classic name that I personally can’t imagine getting tired of, but it does seem kind of bland compared to [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] and [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m]!

[name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] is very handsome and goes well with [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is beautiful too but doesn’t have the unexpectedness of your boys names…[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] is much better

Absolutely love your son’s name! Archimède (the french spelling) was on my list, but I finally leant towards [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] as a mn.

As a [name_m]French[/name_m], I know of the name Ptolémée. We pronounce it Pto-leh-meh with the P. Tolomei feels like a completely different name to me. I would not have recognized it, or think that it is a creative spelling. So, I would go with [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m], because it looks more authentic, more classy, more historic. Now, because I’m not a native American, I would have pronounced it Pto-lee-my or Pto-lee-me the first time. (I say To-loh-my for Tolomei).

I absolutely love [name_m]Galileo[/name_m]/[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]/[name_m]Belvedere[/name_m] and [name_f]Galatea[/name_f]/[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]/[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] with [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m].
I could totally see a sibset like [name_m]Archimedes[/name_m] [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], [name_m]Galileo[/name_m] [name_m]Franklin[/name_m], [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] Oleander & [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I would be in love haha! You have good tastes!

I voted for [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m], because it looks more coherent.

Definitely [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m].

Thank you all for your feedback!

@mccharlie your perspective as someone from another country is highly appreciated. I really love learning about different variants of names and their pronunciations. Thank you also for the combo auggestions, they are wonderful!

And [name_m]Archibald[/name_m] is a lovely choice!

@islanmoon yes, another fan of [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]!!!
