Which Spelling?

Hello all  My husband and I are thrilled to be welcoming our first baby end of [name_u]January[/name_u]/early February! We kept the gender a surprise and have had a boy’s name chosen since I was about 8 weeks pregnant. For a little girl though, we took a bit longer.

I think we’ve finally settled on the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. So, I just wanted to ask what everyone thought of the spelling [name_f]Violet[/name_f] vs [name_f]Violette[/name_f]?

Personally, I think [name_f]Violette[/name_f] is a bit more feminine. However, she will have two middle names after my two recently deceased grandmothers ([name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f]) so I wonder if the simpler spelling of [name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be better?

Opinions on spelling are welcome so long as they’re tactful. We’re also open to suggestions of similar names that would sound nice with her double middle.

Thanks everyone!

Personally, I prefer the simple [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I think because it’s also a common word, it’s best to keep the same spelling.

Another vote for [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Beautiful name!

I think [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is better, especially with the middles. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is very nice!

3rd vote for [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! I pronounce [name_f]Violet[/name_f] “V-eye-o-let” and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] “Vee-o-let” like [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] without the a.
I think the o is more pronounced in [name_f]Violette[/name_f] than [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. [name_f]Violette[/name_f] is more “Vee-O-let” and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is more “Veye-let” if that makes any sense.

Another vote for [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! I think the extra letters are unnecessary, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is just perfect as it is

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]! :]

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] are not pronounced the same as the pp stated. I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f] (unless you’re of [name_m]French[/name_m] heritage or plan to live in a [name_m]French[/name_m] speaking area of the world I fear [name_f]Violette[/name_f] would be butchered in pronunciation and spelling). In your case, I would keep the name simple: [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is very pretty.

I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f], as well. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is gorgeous!

I prefer the simple, traditional spelling. Easier on her. Beautiful name choices!

I agree with waverly123, I would pronounce [name_f]Violette[/name_f] vee-oh-let instead of the conventional V-eye-o-let - to me they’re two different names. To avoid any confusion, I would definitely go with [name_f]Violet[/name_f]!

It depends on what pronunciation you want.
I pronounce [name_f]Violet[/name_f] as “vie-oh-let” or “vie-let”, and [name_f]Violette[/name_f] as “vee-oh-let.”

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Looks like you’ve got a consensus!

[name_f]May[/name_f] I ask what boys’ name you’re going with?

[name_f]Violet[/name_f], definitely. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a familiar word, a color name, a flower. It doesn’t need extra letters to look more feminine. And, like pp said, I would think “Vee-oh-let” for [name_f]Violette[/name_f], which is probably not how you want to pronounce it. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is lovely, by the way.

I think so too! [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is the definite winner! Our boy will be [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u].

prefer traditional spellings, I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

As for it being feminine enough, it is a name given only to females and is a floral name so 'nuff said.

I greatly prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Violets is a bit too frilly, especially with two middle names. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] [name_f]Yvonne[/name_f] is lovely, a perfect balance of sweetness as spunk.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped us choose [name_f]Violet[/name_f]! And thank you to those who pointed out [name_f]Violette[/name_f] is actually pronounced differently!
We had a girl’s name chosen a while back ([name_f]Lydia[/name_f]) but I just couldn’t fall in love with it. But, we’re [name_m]BOTH[/name_m] so in love with [name_f]Violet[/name_f]!
Having names we love makes waiting for baby even more exciting!
Thanks again!

Congrats on your decision! I personally love [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

I prefer [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. With the middle names, I think the simpler spelling is better.
