I picked [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] because I like the way it sounds. To me it has a prettier sound than [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]. The class I student taught in had a little girl named [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]. She had tan skin and dark brown curly hair. I also think of the singer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]. Never met anyone named [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f].
I personally like [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] better, but [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] is a nice name too. I voted for [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] because I think the pronunciation of [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] can be easily mixed up with ‘Tasman,’ which is a boy’s name where I live in Australia. I know both a [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] (nn. [name_f]Tammy[/name_f]) and a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] (spelled [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f]). Both of the girls are of a European background.
For [name_f]Tasmin[/name_f], I can imagine a whole range of sibling names - everything from [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_m]Jack[/name_m] to [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u].
For [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], I imagine her having siblings whose names perhaps ending with a similar sound, eg. [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m], [name_f]Elena[/name_f], etc.
I like [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] better because it sounds more soft and feminine…[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] feels quite harsh in comparison, and I don’t like even the possibility of the nn [name_f]Tammy[/name_f]
I know a 12 year old named [name_f]Talia[/name_f], with older siblings named [name_f]Katrina[/name_f] and [name_f]Laura[/name_f]. She’s slightly tanned with blonde/brown curly hair and brown eyes, and the bubbliest personality ever…never met a [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] in person but I’ve heard of one or two around, with siblings like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u], [name_f]Jade[/name_f] and [name_f]Hailey[/name_f], from what I’ve heard they’ve been pretty snobby and not the nicest of people, but that doesn’t mean anything in regards to their name imo.
I suppose [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]'s similarity to Tasman (as another posted mentioned) is a contributing factor to it’s unpopularity here in NZ and Aus.
I agree that I don’t like the nn [name_f]Tammy[/name_f] and I dislike Tasman as well. I was thinking Tamsie as a nn?
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f].
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] sounds like cold medicine to me.
I’m actually surprised to see so many votes for [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]! I voted [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f]. I have known [name_f]Thalia[/name_f]/[name_f]Talia[/name_f]/[name_f]Tahlia[/name_f]'s growing up and have no real association or reason to dislike it, but [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] is fresh to me and I picture a little girl with a sunny personality and gracefulness. I can also picture an adult female taking care of her children and/or dominating in the workplace. It’s very well rounded. [name_f]Talia[/name_f] seems like a perpetual little girl to me.
This is excellent feedback
I’d probably pick [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], but I prefer the [name_f]Talia[/name_f] spelling. [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] sounds weird to me, I’ve never been a fan of the name. I’ve never met anyone with either name, so I don’t have any associations.
Looks like only a quarter of you like tamsin better than [name_f]Talia[/name_f]?
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f] is a family name and I love the meaning so it’s one of my favorites. But I like [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] too-- it’s not as girly, but it reminds me of damson (kind of plum) and it’s great as a feminine [name_m]Thomas[/name_m].
I prefer [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], as it feels spunky and fresh yet feminine to me. It also feels very British Isles to me - I’ve never known a [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], but that’s the association I have from encountering it in literature. (I’m American.)
I have known a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] with this spelling, and she had a heck of a time getting people to pronounce the name correctly. I’d prefer [name_f]Talia[/name_f]. She also was a bit of an odd duck, and I confess that puts me off the name a bit.
I prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], although the spelling [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f] is my preference, and also clears up any pronunciation issues as [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] could also be read with the hard ‘Th’ sound, as in [name_m]Thay[/name_m]-lia or Tha-lia. I think [name_f]Tahlia[/name_f] is a beautiful name, and it’s seemed more popular here in Aus/NZ then overseas.
[name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] is a name I feel like I should like, but I don’t really. It has some kind of dated vibe for me, though that’s of course very subjective! Like other posters have mentioned, it reminds me of Tasman, which I actually like, and also makes me think of a couple of medications that sound very similar. So [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] definitely appeals way more to me!
For the record I’m from the east coast of the US. I actually knew a [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] when I was a kid, and I always had trouble pronouncing it. I never knew if it was supposed to be “thah-lia” (like when you go “ahhh” at the doctor) or if it was supposed to be “thaa-lia” (like the A in “cat”). She would tell me and then I would forget again. Also some people apparently pronounce it like “talia.” So my opinion is that it’s a lovely name that has a confusing pronunciation. I also remember that it’s the name of the Greek muse of comedy, but the girl herself was rather sullen and solemn, which I found amusing.
I like [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], mostly because of the character in the show Lost Girl. (She shows up after a couple seasons.) If you want to watch a show with a character named [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] so you can hear it used, I recommend Lost Girl. They do use the nickname [name_f]Tammy[/name_f] occasionally, but if I remember correctly the character hates the nickname and shuts that down pretty quickly. I had never heard the name before and now I think it’s pretty cool. It’s very rare in the US, I’ve never heard of anyone here with the name, but apparently it’s pretty popular in the UK.
I prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] for two reasons: 1. This was the name of one of the girls in my choir class who was extremely sweet, 2. [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] does not have the nicest sound to me, and I had to look up how to pronounce it. However, I do live in [name_f]Arizona[/name_f] with a highly Hispanic population, so it is easier for me to pronounce names such as [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] - which are commonly used here - whereas a name like [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] (which i’ve never heard before), is less familiar.
The [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] I knew had tan skin and long black hair. She was extremely friendly and generous, as well as amazing at sports and choir. She only had one sister, and her name was [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f]. Most of the people she met liked her name… I don’t see any big problems with it, either.
[name_f]Tasmin[/name_f] is usable as well, but I do not feel like it is as recognizable. I imagine a [name_f]Tasmin[/name_f] to have curly hair and gorgeous brown eyes. For siblings, maybe a brother named [name_u]Rhys[/name_u].
Thanks- this poll has a few more hours if anyone else wants to weigh in
Despite the nn “[name_f]Tammy[/name_f]” that would maybe arise from the name [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], I’ve always loved that name! Has always seemed sweet and strong to me at the same time.
I voted for [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f], one of my long term favourite names. It may not be much used in the US, but is a well-known name in other countries such as UK and Australia. I have come across it many times and never seen it confused with Tasman.
I prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], it’s sounds more feminine. I dislike the nickname [name_f]Tammy[/name_f]. Tams in is alright, it has an exotic flair to it, but I prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] over all.
I prefer [name_f]Thalia[/name_f], but not when its pronounced like [name_f]Talia[/name_f]. [name_f]Tamsin[/name_f] is gorgeous too, but since iam not a fan of the potential nn [name_f]Tammy[/name_f], i vote for [name_f]Thalia[/name_f].
