Which would you choose? Rose, Ruby, or Hazel?

[name]Hi[/name], all

Many of you Berries can probably relate to my former predicament: my SO used to be completely wigged out by my over-zealous interest in (read: obsession with) names. After nearly 4 years, we now talk about names rather frequently. I am ecstatic to say that his taste in names finally matches better with mine. He no longer suggests [name]Emily[/name] or [name]Sarah[/name] or [name]Jason[/name] or [name]Brandon[/name] every time I ask his opinion! Wahoo!

While we are still a few years from TTC, we recently had a revolutionary conversation during which we both shared our short girls list…and I was shocked to discover that they are nearly identical!

We nixed a few of our mutual favorites because we agree that our future babes will need shorter first names (we will probably have a whopper double-barrel last name for the kiddos). The good news is that after that weeding session, we cannot decide between our top 3 because we love them so much!

He knows all about Nameberry, and he asked me to post to get a sense of what you sophisticated namers think of our list:

[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]

Without knowing too much about potential last names, what do you think of those three names in terms of sound, style, popularity, etc. We are dying to hear your thoughts!

Much love,
[name]Danni[/name] & Mr. J

[name]Love[/name] love love [name]Hazel[/name]! I remember as a little girl, I always wished I had a Z in my name because I thought they were so cool. [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] are also gorgeous!

[name]Rose[/name] is sweet and simple, I picture a small, dark haired little girl who would be very quiet and reserved, very intelligent. I like [name]Rose[/name] and it’s quite interesting as a FN as opposed to a filler middle name. I have only ever known one [name]Rose[/name] and she’s 2 years old, and it fits her perfectly.

[name]Hazel[/name] is one that is growing on me! I used to think of a cat, purely because I know just as many cat’s named [name]Hazel[/name] as I do people. The [name]Hazel[/name] that springs to mind is one of the most beautiful 16 year old girl’s I’ve ever met, and she’s fun, friendly, popular, intelligent and just everything rolled into. She’s stylish, reserved when needed but confident and opinionated too. It isn’t at all popular, although it does appear to be a favourite amongst a lot of Berries, I don’t think the rest of the world quite shares that opinion which makes it a classic beauty that will never be overly popular.

[name]Ruby[/name] used to be my favourite girl’s name but it is like the 7th most popular girl’s name in the UK dropping from 1st, 2nd and then to 7th. I only know of 3 girl’s named [name]Ruby[/name], all under the age of 4 years, so it does seem like a 00’s name and therefore a little trendy in the UK. The sound is perfect, and I probably would still love it if it wasn’t so popular. The singer [name]Charlotte[/name] Church named her daughter [name]Ruby[/name], which probably helped to make it that bit more popular too. I think this one makes a beautiful middle name for a longer first name.

My vote goes to [name]Ruby[/name]

[name]Hazel[/name] is my favorite! I think it’s cute and spunky, yet old fashioned at the same time. I also feel the same way about [name]Ruby[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are great! [name]Rose[/name] is just kind of… blah to me. Not as interesting as the other two [name]IMO[/name].

Thanks, everyone, for your input so far!

namelover77: Loved your [name]Hazel[/name] story! As a kid, I wished my name was a little more rare or interesting, too.

sheflieswithherownwings: Wow, your take on the names is so beautiful and detailed! [name]Ruby[/name] is the one I have the most reservations about in terms of how popular it is in the UK. Granted, I live in the US, but my name style is much more in sync with the UK’s so, for me, UK name popularity has the same weight as the USA’s. I expected that [name]Ruby[/name] would become popular state-side when [name]Toby[/name] [name]McGuire[/name] and his wife had their [name]Ruby[/name] Sweetheart. But I’ve never met anyone younger than 77 named [name]Ruby[/name]… Thank you for your visions!

vito208: Thanks for your vote

jennipea382: Thank you for your honesty about [name]Rose[/name]. I agree that [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] have a bit of a spunkier vibe. Whereas [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] match me, [name]Rose[/name] matches Mr. J’s gentle personality.

you really cant go wrong…these are all really lovely names

I love [name]Rose[/name] the best

I really love [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name], just about equally, but short-sweet-and-spunky [name]Ruby[/name] wins it for me! Probably because I have the hardest time pairing up [name]Hazel[/name] but I have two [name]Ruby[/name] combos I equally adore. [name]Do[/name] you have a MN picked out yet?

Good luck!

I really do love all three. But I always think of [name]Rose[/name] as more of a middle name. Though [name]Ruby[/name] is more popular in the UK I find it to be the freshest sounding of the three. I see [name]Hazel[/name] becoming super popular in the near future.

mollycat78: You’re so sweet! Thank you

catloverd: [name]Rose[/name] is so lovely, isn’t she?

ashthedreamer: [name]Hazel[/name] will most likely be [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] after my grandmother. I like [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Samantha[/name] after my sister, and I agree that [name]Ruby[/name] is easier to pair up with middles! I don’t have a middle name for [name]Rose[/name] yet, though… any suggestions?

shanbrownie: I share your observation that [name]Hazel[/name] could become really popular… the last thing I want is for my kids to experience what I went through: I was known as [name]Danielle[/name] L. for all of my middle and high school career because there was another [name]Danielle[/name] the grade behind me… Let’s hope [name]Hazel[/name] doesn’t get too popular!

my vote goes for [name]Ruby[/name]! I think its adorable, I don’t personally know any [name]Ruby[/name]'s but I think it works well on a little girl and on an adult.Whenever I think of the name [name]Ruby[/name] I think of the little girl from “according to [name]Jim[/name]”.

I know one rose and she’s our land lord in her 30’s, I do like it but as other have said alot of people usually use it as a “filler” middle name. Having it as a first name might be refeshing to hear though!

I like [name]Hazel[/name] as well, but I do find it a bit old ladyish especially because the only person I know with that name is a lady in her 80’s.

All 3 are nice names, so I don’t think you’ll go wrong with any of them really.

[name]Rose[/name] is actually my middle name, but I always hated it, lol. I just love it as a first name though, but I can’t use it now since it’s my middle and I’m not into that naming my children after me thing…

So I was a bit biased when I said I love [name]Rose[/name] the best, but I think it is prettier than [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name]. It sounds more sophisticated and elegant. [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] give me the sense of someone who has a little bit of spunk to them.

You could maybe combine [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name]: [name]Rose[/name] [name]Hazel[/name]

Other suggestions:
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Adelia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Adeline[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Evelyn[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Emilia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Emmalina[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Vanessa[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Camille[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Estella[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Annabelle[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Julia[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Jillian[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Meredith[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Elaine[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Brielle[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Abigail[/name]
[name]Rose[/name] [name]Evangeline[/name]

All three of these names are so beautiful! I have a soft spot for [name]Rose[/name], but I really love [name]Hazel[/name] too! [name]Ruby[/name] is very cute and spunky, but I have a feeling it’s going to become quite popular over the next few years, even more so than [name]Hazel[/name]… [name]Hazel[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Samantha[/name] are both great combos, really love them! For [name]Rose[/name], I like [name]Rose[/name] [name]Victoria[/name] and [name]Rose[/name] [name]Felicity[/name]

ACK! I see you’re problem. [name]Just[/name] when I think I have them sorted in order of how much I like them, I think of something else that changes those ranks!

[name]Ruby[/name] was my least favorite of the three, but I think I adore the nn [name]Rue[/name] more than all other possible nn’s for the three names. So there’s that.

[name]Rose[/name] is more feminine whereas [name]Hazel[/name] has more a vintage spunk to it. And both suit my tastes. Although for [name]Rose[/name] I’m more likely to use [name]Rosamund[/name], but that’s me. I actually love [name]Rose[/name] more as a first name to as opposed to it’s usual spot in the mn position.

Eeny Meeny Miney [name]Moe[/name] dictates that my vote is: [name]Ruby[/name] nn [name]Rue[/name].

So, funny I’m considering [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] as first names myself! [name]Both[/name] lovely names. Good luck!

I like both [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] quite a lot. I’m lukewarm on [name]Rose[/name]. My grandmother was named [name]Helen[/name], but for some reason my grandfather always called her two other names - [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Bridget[/name]. I don’t know why he did that, and no one else called her those names. But I think I have a fondness for [name]Hazel[/name] because of that.

[name]Hazel[/name] has my vote

I have such a soft spot for [name]Hazel[/name]!! [name]Ruby[/name] comes in close second. [name]Both[/name] names have such personality to me and a combination of sweet and spunky! I don’t think you could go wrong with either. [name]Rose[/name] is just NMS. Good luck!

[name]Hazel[/name] is shooting up the charts. I love the name, and had it on my short list a couple years ago, but would never choose it for myself because I think it is becoming trendy FAST. (I am in the states)
http://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi
In 2000 it was ranked 893 and in 2011 it was ranked 211…It is shooting up.
[name]Ruby[/name] is also shooting up the charts though not as quickly - in 2011 it was 109.

[name]Rose[/name], on the other hand, has remained stable, and is a beautiful classic choice that won’t be dated! [name]Just[/name] my opinion - but my main concern is not having a “trendy” name. All of the names are lovely - my favorite is [name]Hazel[/name], for sure- so if you REALLY love any of those names then pick it!
