I have been lusting over the name [name]Whistler[/name] for a while now. It has special meaning to our family, and we think it has a great sound, especially with our last name.
I have one question though. Since our fam is huge on nicknames, trying to come up with one for [name]Whistler[/name] has been a bit of a challenge. My immediate first thought was [name]Whistler[/name] nn [name]Whit[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you think this works well? Is it weird since we would obviously be pronouncing the “t” in [name]Whit[/name], but not in [name]Whistler[/name]? Is there any other options you can think of as a nickname for [name]Whistler[/name]?
Another question would be, if you heard a parent calling their kid “[name]Whit[/name]” on the playground, would you assume a little boy or girl would come running? [name]Whittaker[/name]? [name]Whitney[/name]? (This doesn’t really matter to us, since we actually like unisex names/don’t see a problem in them, but I am still curious nonetheless.)
Could you see a little [name]Whistler[/name] nn [name]Whit[/name] running around with brothers [name]Rigby[/name] ([name]Rig[/name]), [name]Miller[/name] ([name]Mills[/name]) and sisters [name]Wren[/name] ([name]Birdie[/name]) & [name]Eloise[/name] ([name]Lola[/name])?
I love your kids names! To be honest at first I thought [name]Whistler[/name], now way. Then I thought about it and I really like it. I think it could be used for boy or girl. It makes me think of a very happy little child. I also think [name]Whit[/name] is a perfect NN.
[name]Whistler[/name] immediately makes me think of [name]Whistler[/name]'s Mother (and a [name]Rocky[/name] and Bullwinkle sketch about the painting, haha). I don’t mind the connection though, and I love the nn [name]Whit[/name]. I don’t think the “t” thing matters. I also don’t think that [name]Whit[/name] is particularly gendered, but if I were to pick one, I’d say I see a boy with this nickname ([name]Walt[/name] [name]Whitman[/name] kinda comes to mind with “[name]Whit[/name]”). I think [name]Whitney[/name] is generally dropping off and I don’t know a [name]Whitney[/name] who goes by [name]Whit[/name].
I know someone named [name]Whistler[/name] with twin brother [name]Harper[/name].
I think [name]Whit[/name] would work fine as a nn for [name]Whistler[/name]. It’s strong an handsome and I would think it was a boy if I heard [name]Whit[/name] on the playground. I think [name]Whistler[/name] goes really nicely with the other children
[name]Whistler[/name] makes me think of [name]Whistler[/name], British [name]Columbia[/name]. It then makes me think of whistling. I have never heard this name before but I think it’s cute. It sounds outdoorsy to me and I think [name]Whit[/name] is a great option for a nickname. When I hear [name]Whit[/name] I expect a boy, I think it sounds handsome. I didn’t think of [name]Whitney[/name] till you pointed it out, but I wouldn’t worry about it.
[name]Walt[/name] [name]Whitman[/name] came to my mind as well. [name]Whistler[/name] is a interesting choice. I think it would work with what you like, and [name]Whit[/name] is cute. I actually think [name]Eloise[/name] is the most unexpected out of all your children’s names. I do like all their names though.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Wasn’t expecting such positive feedback - great news!
lis09 - we would be using this name because of our love for [name]Whistler[/name] BC! Such a stunning place to visit both in the winter and summer!
Super interesting to hear that most find [name]Whit[/name] to be masculine. For me, [name]Whit[/name] is right on the edge of m/f, which i think is a good attribute.
Are [name]Miller[/name] and [name]Whistler[/name] too similar? [name]Both[/name] ending in -ler? It doesn’t seem to bug us too much, considering they would more often than not me [name]Mills[/name] & [name]Whit[/name].
[name]Whistler[/name] is intriguing! I like the idea of [name]Whistler[/name] called [name]Whit[/name]. I do find [name]Whistler[/name] a bit similar to [name]Miller[/name] and maybe [name]Wren[/name], but since you also have [name]Rigby[/name] and [name]Eloise[/name] I don’t think it’s a big deal.
I would assume [name]Whit[/name] was a boy. Then again, I also think [name]Whitney[/name] is very masculine.
What middle names would you use with [name]Whistler[/name]?
I think of the painter [name]Whistler[/name], which makes it a great connection [name]IMO[/name]. I wouldn’t personally use it, but I think it’s fine and I’d be pleasantly surprised to meet someone’s little boy named [name]Whistler[/name].
^This. Also, I wouldn’t necessarily wonder if a boy or girl was called [name]Whit[/name] at the playground. It’s not really unisex, it’s just a justifiable nickname for either sex where each name is definitely either boy or girl. I don’t think that makes the name unisex, but since you said that doesn’t matter anyway, use it! It’s awesome.
Funny, thatxbelle, about me being “Whistlers Mother”! Hey! I don’t mind that! I was actually an [name]Art[/name] [name]History[/name] student during my years at university so I really, really like this tie. I remember learning about the painting as being an icon of motherhood + a discussion on family values. Plus the tie to our favourite winter vacation spot, [name]Whistler[/name] BC, makes me fall in love with this name even more. What a loaded name!
Southern.maple, I havent really thought about middle names yet. Though, [name]Everett[/name] is still a huge favourite of ours. Not sure if i like the combo of [name]Whistler[/name] [name]Everett[/name] though, as combining the two together makes me think of the rockies mountain [name]Whistler[/name], and then Mount [name]Everest[/name]. I don’t think I would completely throw that option away though. [name]Bowen[/name], [name]Cabot[/name] and [name]Hollis[/name] are other favourites. [name]Whistler[/name] [name]Bowen[/name], [name]Whistler[/name] [name]Cabot[/name] & [name]Whistler[/name] [name]Hollis[/name] all sound great to me.
I [name]LOVE[/name] your sibsets and feel. I’m from Cape [name]Breton[/name] and think [name]Whistler[/name] [name]Cabot[/name] would be a great boy’s name.
The first thing that came to my mind was this really old radio crime show called the [name]Whistler[/name], and I’m probably the only person in the world who thinks that because I used to listen to it on a crappy AM station driving late at night for work. I wasn’t sold on [name]Whistler[/name] as a name at first, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. And I really adore [name]Whit[/name] as a nickname. Makes me think of being witty or something. If someone was calling for a [name]Whit[/name] on the playground, I would assume it would be a [name]Whitney[/name] who responded since I have friends who go by [name]Whit[/name] who are named [name]Whitney[/name]. But I think [name]Whit[/name] is a great nickname for [name]Whistler[/name] and you should go for it!
I love it. [name]Both[/name] the name and the nn. I thought immediately of [name]James[/name] [name]Whistler[/name]. He was an amazing and avant garde (for the time) painter, even if he was not a very nice person. And [name]Whit[/name] reminds me of [name]Walt[/name] [name]Whitman[/name] which is an awesome connotation. Good luck!
PS [name]Whistler[/name]'s series of nocturnes are some of my favorites:
