We decided to name our daughter [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Calypso[/name] (Greek, meaning “Hidden [name]Wisdom[/name]”, signifying the mystery of God in 1 Corinthians 2:7). We feel it is beautiful, mysterious, unusual, exotic, cool, and still rather chic. Plus, we thought it went well with our first daughter, [name]Eva[/name] [name]Natalia[/name]. Unfortunately, my mom, my husband’s sister, as well as a ton of people on baby name forums hate the name. They think there is something wrong with us for liking it because it is so ridiculous.
I know that it doesn’t matter what other people think, as long as we love it. So my question is not whether we should use it or not, but why does everyone hate it?
Honestly I have no idea because it’s really beautiful! I’m just wondering, is it [name]Sophia[/name] they hate or [name]Calypso[/name]? [name]Sophia[/name] is fairly popular, it’s hard to imagine anyone hating on it so strongly. If it’s [name]Calypso[/name] they don’t like I can only imagine it’s because they’re not familiar with it and it’s a more unusual choice. You don’t seem to be wavering on your choice and I would say stick with it! It’s a beautiful name and it obviously has a strong meaning for you and your husband!
I’ve never heard this combination before, but I’ll be honest, and I’m sure others will disagree with me. [name]Sophia[/name] is sophisticated, Italian, romantic (think [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Loren[/name]) but [name]Calypso[/name] is dramatic, edgy, flirty and primal. [name]Sophia[/name] is warm candle-lit nights, [name]Calypso[/name] is salty, windy seas. I think one is trying to outweigh the other. It is NOT a horrible name combination, and both are gorgeous, I just think [name]Calypso[/name] is a bit out of place. It would be like [name]Midori[/name] [name]Alessandra[/name], or [name]Gloria[/name] Nimue. But that is just an image, a feeling. As far as the looks of it, the letters, it looks great together. BUT, that is just one person’s opinion. If YOU love it, nothing else matters.
I can’t imagine why people hate it but I’ll be honest, I don’t love it and I’m a huge fan of [name]Sophie[/name] despite its popularity. My problem is it brings to mind calypso music which I’ve never cared for. Maybe the music association as well as popularity or [name]Sophie[/name] puts people off? I think you should use it if you both love it deslite what other people think or say, there’s nothing wrong with the name.
I don’t hate it. I wouldn’t pick it, but I wouldn’t make fun of you to my friends either I think its just an unusual pairing, (which is why you’re probably hearing complaints) but I love the meaning!
I agree with a few other people. It’s not that it’s bad, it’s that the names have different feelings, one is classic and the other is exotic. Like @christinamariane said, [name]Sophia[/name] is romantic and soft and [name]Calypso[/name] is bold and strong. I picture [name]Sophia[/name] reading by candle light and I picture [name]Calypso[/name] sailing in the Mediterranean. That’s not bad, in my opinion. I love that the images conflict and give her option as to her future personality and nicknames and what not.
That’s probably the issue with other people though. They probably feel weird hearing a name they are used to associating with classic maturity paired with an exotic choice. I think it’s lovely though.
[name]Sophia[/name] is classic and traditional and [name]Calypso[/name] is quirky and exotic. I think you have the right mix! The middle spot is the perfect place for a more offbeat and unusual name so I wouldn’t worry about it. [name]Eva[/name] and [name]Sophia[/name] make a great sister duo and your family and friends will get use to [name]Calypso[/name] in time.
I think that it’s fantastic, and I [name]LOVE[/name] the “hidden wisdom” meaning and its meaning to you. I love that [name]Sophia[/name] is more well-known and established and [name]Calypso[/name] is more exotic - I don’t think that names with different feels are incapable of working together in a combination. Have the people who “hate” the name mentioned anything specific when they’ve voiced their negative reactions? Honestly, the only thing that I can imagine is that they’re unfamiliar with [name]Calypso[/name] and feel that it’s too out there, but that’s hidden away in the middle. [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Calypso[/name] is a gorgeous name, and a girl named [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Calypso[/name] wouldn’t be in the slightest way hindered in her life by her name - [name]Sophia[/name] is a classic name that’s currently incredibly popular, and [name]Calypso[/name], while uncommon and likely unknown to a lot of people, is established and could be easily hidden should the situation call for it. I think that the people who hate it are likely just being melodramatic and enjoying complaining, if I’m being honest, and I’m sure that your mom and your husband’s sister will get used to it. People have come to love far worse names than [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Calypso[/name] once they’ve been attached to family.
I think it’s a great name, a common first name with a more exotic middle name. I love the meaning and I think it works well with your first daughters name [name]Eva[/name] [name]Natalia[/name]!
I love it (but I love Greek names ) However I can see how people might find [name]Calypso[/name] to be a bit of a strange choice. But as a combo it is gorgeous and the meaning is very nice
I think the name is pretty dang cool actually! Like others said the fn and mn are different styles but I actually like it! [name]Calypso[/name] is pretty unexpected but I think it still sounds good. It’s funny to me that people are getting so bent out of shape over a mn because many people take family names that aren’t necessarily the most flattering but use them anyway and no one usually says much as long as they like the fn. I also think it’s really cool that the name has a special meaning to you and your DH.
I can’t imagine why people would “hate” the name. I can see as some others have mentioned, that the styles are a bit off, but with the meaning you have behind them, I think it is a beautiful fit!! Then, again I like seeing someting a little, less expected and off beat in the middle name poistion.
I adore [name]Sophia[/name] but not so crazy for [name]Calypso[/name]…but I tend towards the classics. I think that the flow of the name sounds lovely. If it is the more exotic middle name that puts people off then don’t worry about it. Since it is in the middle spot it wont be said all the time. People will get over it. [name]Do[/name] what you love.
I’m not getting the hate. [name]Sophia[/name] is an extremely popular name, so unless people want you to go with something more unusual, I don’t see the problem. And I’m squarely in the “anything can go in the middle position” camp, so I have no issue with [name]Calypso[/name]. As for whether or not they go together - who cares? [name]Do[/name] you go by your first and middle name together? Does ANYONE? (Beside [name]Jim[/name] [name]Bob[/name] Duggar ) Unless you are calling her [name]Sophia[/name] [name]Calypso[/name], instead of plain ol’ [name]Sophia[/name], don’t let anyone get you down. Besides - no is even going to ask you what her middle name is after about a year, if you even get asked that long. In fact, my third child is 10 weeks old and not a single person has asked what his middle name is. And my other are two are 3 and 20 months and I couldn’t tell you the last time their middle names came up in conversation.
Totally concur with all here. Maybe people just need something to complain about and this is the target. I’ll just add that I’m a [name]Jessica[/name] from the 1980s with an unusual middle name (well, it was unusual, it’s becoming more popular now, but that seems less likely to happen with [name]Calypso[/name]) and I LOVED having that contrast, so I think since [name]Sophia[/name]'s so popular it’s great that you’re setting her up for something more unexpected in the middle! I think it’s really nice with both the o’s, and I also think [name]Eva[/name] [name]Natalia[/name] is quite lovely!
