Why do you love your favorite names?

I’ve noticed we often list our favorite names, but we never detail why we love them! I’m really curious to hear what you guys have to say. Maybe you’ll even get people to love certain names by showing them something about it that they never realized before.

I’ll start off:

[name]Hazel[/name] - I love how it has a zany kick in it with the “z” and sounds a bit mysterious and maybe even mischievous. But at the same time, it sounds warm, probably because of the “hay” sound. I also love that it is a nature name. It feels vintage and quite classic without being too popular. I feel like it would age well – it’s not hard to take seriously.
[name]Matilda[/name] - I love that it’s girly without being frilly. It sounds strong and independent but kind. Like with [name]Hazel[/name], I love that it’s vintage and sounds classic without being too popular, and the fact that it can be both whimsical and serious.
[name]Severine[/name] - I like that this unexpected and even rather sultry and mysterious. I like how it sounds refined. And I like that it isn’t popular.

[name]William[/name] - It sounds so warm to me. Strong, goodhearted, moral. I also like its classic status and how it has such a history. Also, the nickname “[name]Will[/name]” – it sounds friendly and unpretentious, and I personally believe it’s very important to have will.
[name]Isaac[/name] - I love that this is a classic Biblical name. It has that rare double “a” in it, and it sounds very strong. It also has a wonderful meaning – “laughter.” Also, I might be biased because it runs in my family.
[name]Jasper[/name] - This name sounds fun to me. I picture a [name]Jasper[/name] as someone who is very clever. I like that it’s a gemstone and is quite the classic, moreover.

As you can see, I like classic names. What about you guys?

[name]Stella[/name] - My number one girls’ option if I had a daughter today. I love the way it sounds, and it fits in with the [name]Ella[/name], [name]Bella[/name] trend but still stands out. I love that it means ‘star’, because I think that’s a nice strong meaning (not like ‘beautiful’ or ‘princess’, which are great but not my top choices for my daughter to embody) and it also has personal meaning for me because my college is represented by a star.
[name]Florence[/name] or [name]Flora[/name] - I go back and forth on using just [name]Flora[/name], or [name]Florence[/name] NN [name]Flora[/name]. I know it’s a love-or-hate name here on NB and lots of people outside NB raise their eyebrows when they hear it, but it’s a family name I just love. I also like that it has ties to art history, which is my field of study. The meaning of [name]Florence[/name], ‘prosperous’, is nice. I think both options are strong and feminine without being frilly, which is important to me. Plus the nickname options - [name]Flora[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] - make [name]Florence[/name] versatile for me.
[name]Leona[/name] - There’s no great personal meaning behind this one, I just love the sound. I think the long O is very on-trend but I love that it’s an underappreciated (in my opinion) vintage gem. Plus it means ‘lion’ or ‘lion-like’, which again I love because there’s nothing frilly about it. And I secretly love the idea of a little girl named [name]Leo[/name], but if she wanted to go with the more feminine [name]Lea[/name] as a nickname she would have that option.
[name]Mabel[/name] - Again, no big personal meaning here, I love the sound. It’s [name]Mae[/name] with a little more substance. She could go by [name]Mae[/name], or by [name]Bel[/name]/[name]Belle[/name] or [name]Bella[/name] if she wanted to without it being too much of a stress. I love that it’s vintage, and I read once that [name]Mabel[/name] ‘sounds like it should be the name of a sassy waitress at a 1950’s diner’ and I just loved that description, lol! And the meaning, ‘lovable’, again is great to me.

Possible girls’ middles I would use are all family names: [name]Lillie[/name], [name]Judith[/name], Revere, [name]Lynn[/name] or [name]Marilyn[/name], et c.

[name]August[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t even bother suggesting [name]Augustus[/name] or [name]Augustin[/name] to me, I think this is perfect all on it’s own. I love the nickname [name]Gus[/name]. I love the connotations of warmth and summer. I love the meaning, which NB says is ‘majestic, venerable’ but I’ve also seen listed as ‘great’. I think it’s a versatile name and it suits my old-man name aesthetic without being unwearable. And I think it would age really well. It’s also a family name, sort of.
[name]Henry[/name] - This is a family surname on my mom’s side, which I think is great. It’s accessible and classic without being overused. I think it’s a name people have heard of, but not often enough to get tired of it. It seems fresh in the sea of [name]Jayden[/name]/[name]Aidan[/name]/[name]Brayden[/name]'s out there. The meaning isn’t super great, ‘estate ruler’, but it doesn’t bother me.
[name]Donald[/name] - This is my grandfather’s first name and will be the middle name of my first son, no matter what. It holds a lot of personal meaning because my grandfather is basically my father figure in my life and we are very close. NB doesn’t like it, but I disagree, I think it’s handsome and vintage.
[name]Oscar[/name] - This last one changes a lot between two or three names but right now it’s [name]Oscar[/name]. I really like old-man names, and I actually think the ‘[name]Oscar[/name] the Grouch’ association is cute. I like that he could go by [name]Oz[/name] if he wanted, and I love the meaning ‘champion warrior’.

Possible middles (all family names): [name]Donald[/name], [name]Dodge[/name], Revere, [name]Stuart[/name], [name]Wallace[/name], [name]Kenyon[/name] (my maiden name), [name]King[/name].

I totally agree about [name]Donald[/name]. ^^ I think it’s adorable and should come back into usage.

[name]Euphemia[/name] - I just love how feminine, princessy, and whimsical it sounds.
[name]Luna[/name] - I love that is mean moon and the idea of a “[name]Little[/name] [name]Luna[/name]” is just too adorable. It also connects to my name, [name]Diana[/name].
[name]Flora[/name] - I love flowers and gardening, plus it has a fairy/whimsical feel to it.
[name]Artemis[/name]/[name]Artemisia[/name] - same as [name]Luna[/name]/[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Caroline[/name] - I started liking this one because of 2 Broke Girls, I love [name]Caroline[/name] in that show and the name just grew on me. ’
[name]Severus[/name] - [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], [name]Severus[/name] Snape is my favorite character, so the name totally latched onto me
[name]Ezra[/name] - I just love the sound, I tend to like V and Z sounds in boy names, I guess I like “snake” names
[name]Everett[/name] - Same as [name]Ezra[/name].
[name]Frederic[/name] - I’m a big fan of Chopin, so I love this spelling and how handsome it sounds.

[name]Eleanor[/name] - I love the sophisticated, yet “gritty” and charming feel to her. She makes me smile. I love that she has [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] approval and history that takes her back that far. And even though I don’t put too much stock in meaning, I love that one of the supposed meanings is “bright, shining light” - I found that definition right after my favorite grandmother passed away, and it was exactly what I needed to hear - I don’t really know how else to explain it. My favorite combination with [name]Eleanor[/name] is [name]Eleanor[/name] [name]June[/name], as [name]June[/name] is my grandmother’s name and honoring her is very important to me.

After [name]Eleanor[/name], I like [name]Mary[/name] very very much. She just has an elegant sort of feel, yet she also has backbone. If that makes any sense? I like [name]Mary[/name] [name]Juliet[/name] as a combination best of all - she has an stubbornly enduring, yet lively romantic feel to her.

[name]Henry[/name] - just has this charming feel to him that wins me over every time. It makes me smile. I don’t have as much to say about him as I do about [name]Eleanor[/name], but I will say that [name]Henry[/name] [name]Alden[/name] (eldest of The Boxcar Children gang) was my first literary crush and that series in particular was how I learned to read - the very beginning of my passion for reading! My favorite combination with [name]Henry[/name] is [name]Henry[/name] [name]John[/name], [name]John[/name] after my father who I would love to honor (I’m a complete Daddy’s girl).

[name]Conrad[/name] - not really sure where this one came from, (probably from a book, if I had to guess) but he’s just got a dashing, sometimes dark, feel to him. My favorite middle name combination for [name]Conrad[/name] is [name]Conrad[/name] [name]Wesley[/name], [name]Wesley[/name] after my writing mentor who is one of the greatest men I’ll ever know (after my father and grandfathers, of course).

I also love [name]Charles[/name], especially after watching the TV show Chuck (which has an amazing taste in names) - I think he’s a greatly underappreciated classic that has character to him.

[name]Isabelle[/name] - I love how sweet and understated and innocent it is. It’s a gorgeous name, just too overused for most people, but that doesn’t bother me in the slightest. The French spelling has significance for me, as well, and I love the connection to the story of [name]Jesus[/name]’ birth, through [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I love the nn [name]Belle[/name]/[name]Bella[/name], too, and how that connects to my love of languages. I love the meaning, too.

[name]Arianne[/name] - I love how it flows off my tongue, the nn [name]Ari[/name], and the meaning “very holy one”. I think [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Arianne[/name] are delightful for sisters, too.

[name]Olivia[/name] - I love the connections to peace and [name]Shakespeare[/name]. I also adore the nns [name]Olive[/name] and [name]Liv[/name]/[name]Livy[/name].

[name]Violet[/name] - purple’s my favorite color. [name]How[/name] could I not like [name]Violet[/name]? lol. Purple is also my grandmother’s favorite color, and violets are my dad and other grandmother’s birth flower. Plus, violets are some of my favorite flowers out there. I think they’re so delicate and beautiful and usually go unnoticed.

[name]Rachel[/name] - I don’t know why I love [name]Rachel[/name], haha. It’s one of those that I grew up loving years ago after reading about this amazing [name]Rachel[/name] in a book, and I grew up loving the story of [name]Rachel[/name] and [name]Leah[/name] and [name]Jacob[/name] in the Bible. I think it’s great with my other favorites, too.

[name]Liliana[/name] - I don’t even really remember when I fell for [name]Liliana[/name], but I remember it was cemented when I met this adorable little girl named [name]Liliana[/name] through work. Back then, I didn’t think I’d use it because I didn’t like the nn/name [name]Lily[/name] back then, but then [name]Lily[/name] took on meaning to honor my grandmother, and I love that [name]Liliana[/name] honors both my grandmothers (the last gift one of them gave me was a lily before she was laid to rest, and the other grandmother’s mn means the same thing as “ana”–[name]Grace[/name]).

[name]Charlotte[/name] - I love its femininity and understated charm, and the nns (oh, the nns!). I also like that it’s the feminine form of a name my mom always wanted to use ([name]Charles[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name]) but never got a chance to.

[name]Hannah[/name] - I like that this also means “grace”, which honors my grandma. I love that it’s not a predictable classic like [name]Mary[/name], [name]Julia[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Jane[/name], or [name]Margaret[/name], but it still is so timeless and classic. I love the story of [name]Hannah[/name] and [name]Samuel[/name] in the Bible, too. In a remote, very sentimental way, it honors my mom, too.

[name]Eleni[/name] - I love how utterly and completely Greek it is, how totally unlike the rest of my list it is, lol. It’s so fun to say and I adore the quirky nn of [name]Leni[/name]! I also love that it’s the original form of my sister’s MN ([name]Eileen[/name]).

[name]Anne[/name]-[name]Sophie[/name] - not set as number ten, but very likely at this point! I love how French chic it is, how it references my faith, my love of languages, my best friend, my sister, and my grandma, all in one, and it’s so unexpected and charming. I love its nns, too ([name]Annie[/name], [name]Sophie[/name]/[name]Soph[/name], maybe even [name]Posy[/name]).

[name]Caleb[/name] - [name]Caleb[/name]'s my favorite Bible character ever. He may not be mentioned a ton, but I love everything the Bible says about him, and I’m sure any little boy would love having such a namesake. I love the vintagey nn of [name]Cal[/name], and that the meaning loosely translates to “loving as full-hearted as a dog” (roughly. haha. I’ve heard it’s not a literal translation, but it sounds much better than how most websites translate it [dog], and it seems like Hebrew scholars corroborate it? I hope it’s true, I love that meaning.

[name]Everett[/name] - I just love how smart and charming and put-together it sounds. [name]Everett[/name]'s so down-to-earth yet so attractive, smart, approachable. [name]Everett[/name] sounds like the perfect catch. I love the occasional nn of Ev, too.

[name]Asher[/name] - I love it for the nn [name]Ash[/name]. Guilty! I know it’s so close to my name but I would love to have an [name]Asher[/name] some day. It’s so fun to say, and I love that it means “blessed”. Granted, most of [name]Joseph[/name]'s brothers weren’t the best role-models, but I haven’t come across anything terrible about [name]Asher[/name] on his own yet.

[name]Jack[/name] - [name]John[/name] is this huge family name for me, but I’m so sick of it that I don’t want to use just [name]John[/name]. [name]Jack[/name] is the perfect alternative! My brother hates it (and thus doesn’t want to pass just [name]Jack[/name] or [name]John[/name] [name]Robert[/name], IV, nn [name]Jack[/name], down), so that pretty much gives me free reign and still honors my brother and dad (and grandfather, and great grandfather, you get the picture!). I love how down-to-earth it is, a bit mischievous, fun. [name]Jack[/name] could be anybody.

[name]Grayson[/name] - I have always had a weird obsession with [name]Gray[/name]–it used to be my favorite color when I was around 5, and I always liked the idea of it as a name, too. When I figured out it could honor my grandma (mn [name]Grace[/name]), I loved [name]Grayson[/name] even more. Plus, I just love surnames.

[name]Avery[/name] - There’s this radio drama I love called Adventures in Odyssey (which I desperately hope my children will love just as much as I do, in the future!), and there’s a very awesome grandpa-figure on it called [name]John[/name] [name]Avery[/name] [name]Whittaker[/name]. So even though I just love [name]Avery[/name], it’s a little bit after [name]Whit[/name], too. Plus, its meaning relating to elves could honor the [name]Christmas[/name] name theme that’s sort of been started in my family (my sister and I both have [name]Christmas[/name] names), and it’s an old name on my grandfather’s side of my family tree.

[name]Brody[/name] - I love how fun and laid-back it is. I don’t know why I love it, I’ve just always loved [name]Brody[/name].

[name]Bailey[/name] - I don’t even remember when I first started loving [name]Bailey[/name], lol. I’m a huge fan of unisex names on boys, and I think [name]Bailey[/name]'s just so handsome. Maybe it was when [name]Bailey[/name] [name]Chase[/name] was on Castle–I was so intrigued by the fact that there was a [name]Bailey[/name] who was a guy, and it slowly grew on me after that. I love it.

[name]Spencer[/name] - it’s soft, surnamey, smart. [name]Just[/name] the sort of name I love!

Eventually there will be a number 10 for the boys, but I don’t know what it is yet. It’s between [name]Charles[/name] nn [name]Charlie[/name] (I have loved [name]Charlie[/name] for a long time, and I love that I could give my mom a [name]Charlie[/name] finally), [name]Elijah[/name] (have always loved the prophet [name]Elijah[/name] in the Bible, and I think [name]Elijah[/name] sounds so sensitive, smart, and handsome), [name]Judah[/name] (love all the Biblical connections to [name]Judah[/name]/[name]Jude[/name], and I just love the sound), [name]Declan[/name] (love how well it fits on my list, and how sensitive and Irish it is… I also love the rumored meaning “full of goodness”), and [name]Zane[/name] (I love that it could be a form of [name]John[/name], and thus also honoring my dad and brother, and I love how quirky “Z” names are, plus, I love the surnamey and cool vibe [name]Zane[/name] gives off).

[name]Isaac[/name]: It sounds much stronger than [name]Isaiah[/name] which I also love and it has the nickname possibility of [name]Zac[/name] which is cute.
[name]Simon[/name]: It just seems so…dorky. I actually love it. [name]Just[/name] has the image of this teenager with glasses playing video games or reading.

[name]Milena[/name]: It’s meaning is what drew me in. [name]Love[/name], grace and warmth. Things that make life worth it, whatever it is. I love the nickname [name]Lena[/name].

[name]Natalie[/name] [name]Winter[/name] - This is like a Christmassy, wintery wonderful combo of mine, I would love to use it for a girl born in [name]December[/name]. I love it because of the cutesyness of [name]Natalie[/name], and the whimsical nature of [name]Winter[/name], and the image it evokes!
[name]Adelaide[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] - I used to hate the name [name]Adelaide[/name] about 10 years ago, I used to read and reread through the Babynames.com name lists and everytime I saw that one I cringed a bit, thinking it was totally awful, then around 5 years ago, it started to really appeal to me. Now it’s a major love of mine and has been for years! Partially because of this song : Anberlin - Adelaide - YouTube [name]Pearl[/name] is a love because my late grandmothers name was [name]Margaret[/name], and it means [name]Pearl[/name], since I’m not fond of [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Pearl[/name] is the next best choice!
[name]Hermione[/name] [name]Jane[/name] - Dare I say it? [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. I love [name]Hermione[/name], I love her character, and would love for my future daughter to grow up looking up to a fictional character who sets a great example, who was also portrayed by an amazing actress who is also a wonderful role model. [name]Jane[/name] is for my mother [name]Janet[/name].
[name]Corisande[/name] [name]Fable[/name] - I found [name]Corisande[/name] about a year ago, while I was wondering if Coridander was a usable name. [name]Corisande[/name] struck me as very pretty, romantic and wonderful. Someone recently described an image of a little [name]Corisande[/name] [name]Fable[/name] as a girl with dark brown curls who loves to read, and I swooned more so, it’s my favorite image of a future daughter. I love reading, and [name]Fable[/name] is a nod to all thing literary that I love.
[name]Lavender[/name] [name]Ellen[/name] - I love [name]Lavender[/name], it’s sweet, romantic, and not overly frilly, kind of leaning towards the nn of Vendi, but we’ll see as those things are usually created not planned… It evokes images of the colour, the flowers and feels beautiful. [name]Ellen[/name] was my grandmothers middle name.
[name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Autumn[/name] - [name]Love[/name] both names but still unsure of the combination. [name]Cordelia[/name] feels regal in a way, and seems somewhat floral. Lots of possible nn’s like [name]Cordi[/name], [name]Delia[/name], etc, and [name]Autumn[/name] is one of my all time favorite names, my favorite season, the colours and weather are generally perfect.
[name]Virginia[/name] [name]Joy[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the nn [name]Ginny[/name] for [name]Virginia[/name], I think the name feels classic, and is underused, and hopefully the obvious teasing potential isn’t something she would have to worry about. I love [name]Joy[/name], it speaks to the happiness a daughter would bring.
[name]Odessa[/name] [name]Faye[/name] - [name]Odessa[/name] is romantic, although a place name, it is a nod to my fiances heritage, and love the nn [name]Dessa[/name]. [name]Faye[/name] is almost just because and could be interchanged, perhaps with [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Pearl[/name].

[name]Lachlan[/name] [name]Alexander[/name] - I have loved [name]Lachlan[/name] for almost 5/6 years now. No idea what nn would be usable though, I dislike [name]Lockie[/name]. [name]Alexander[/name] is the one name my Fiance really seems to like for boys, it’s not a favorite of mine, but if it means a lot to him, it’ll be there.
[name]Evander[/name] [name]Alcott[/name] - [name]Love[/name] [name]Evander[/name], bit of an athletic nod, and NN will be [name]Anders[/name], to honour the father, [name]Andrew[/name], [name]Anders[/name] is really cute, and I hope he would never go by [name]Evan[/name]. [name]Alcott[/name] is a nod to one of my favorite authors. Fairly recent love, compared to how long I have loved [name]Lachlan[/name]. But still second in line for 1-2 years now.

[name]Alba[/name] - I love simple names with beautiful images and this wins on both counts, it also means [name]Scotland[/name] which is my spiritual and until recently my actual home.
[name]Iris[/name] - again images of rainbows and flowers but also mythical connection, crystalline sound but still soft imagery
Lumi - love that it means snow, but looks like it should mean light, that is is light and airy sounding, but still has a warmth
[name]Maeve[/name] - love the mythology and the sound is so warm, love the quirky AE as well
[name]Azure[/name] - is feels and sounds very exotic and spicy, but means ‘blue skies’ which is a lovely imagry, reminds me of [name]Morocco[/name]
[name]Wren[/name] - lovely imagery of a small bird, very light sounding as well.

[name]Luca[/name] - love that it means light, but still has a rougher masculine feeling, love the connection with [name]Italy[/name]
[name]Valo[/name] - again means light, but has that interesting O ending
[name]Torin[/name] - connection with [name]Thor[/name] and towers and chiefs, has the -n ending I love for boys
[name]Ronan[/name] - love the meaning, it even sounds soft and warm
Somerled - love meaning and sound
[name]Rune[/name] - great meaning and sound, can use Roo as a nn

BOYS
[name]Elliot[/name] - This is my most favorite boy’s name for numerous reasons. I’ve loved it since I was probably 11 or 12, and I’ve never gotten tired of it. It’s handsome, masculine, sensitive, and I have a lot of positive associations with the name. It’s also popular enough that most people have heard of it, but not so popular that he’d spend school with a letter after his name.
[name]Lazarus[/name] - It’s strong, quirky, and handsome. I love the way the name conjures up images of life and renewal for me. And [name]Lazar[/name] would be a cool nn.
[name]Gabriel[/name] - It’s way more popular than I normally like, but it’s such a dashing name. It would work on a doctor as it would on a cowboy.
[name]Dashiell[/name] - Well, I love [name]Dashiell[/name] [name]Hammett[/name]. Not gonna lie. But overall, I just love the tone of this name. It’s another one that would wear well on an adult, as well as a kid. Also, a little [name]Dashiell[/name] is probably not going to be one of five other kids in his class with the same name.
[name]Jonah[/name] - This is such a friendly name. It conjures up images of someone who would be friendly and relaxed. And again, it’s familiar but not outlandishly popular. (I’ve never met a [name]Jonah[/name].)
[name]Viggo[/name] - I like this one because it’s jaunty and offbeat.
[name]Silas[/name] - I love the sound of this one. I’ve been between [name]Silas[/name], [name]Cyrus[/name], and [name]Simon[/name] for a long time. I’m leaning toward [name]Silas[/name], because it has the same clean feel as [name]Simon[/name], but I love the L sound in the name, and I love the S ending.
[name]William[/name] - This is a clean, relaxed name, and I love it. It’s also a family name, which makes it a sentimental favorite. It was the name of my great-grandpa, my grandpa, and my uncle. [name]Will[/name] is such a friendly nickname. [name]William[/name] is an adaptable classic.

GIRLS
[name]Evangeline[/name] - This name is so pretty and girly and romantic. I love that it also offers so many potential nicknames. Also, it makes me think of an old [name]Levon[/name] Helm song (that’s not why I love the name–it’s just a perk).
[name]Rosalie[/name] - This is such a happy name! For me, it’s the female equivalent of [name]Jonah[/name]–friendly, relaxed. It’s also an old family name.
[name]Artemis[/name] - This may be the first girl’s name I ever loved. I grew up reading a lot of mythology, and this one just stuck with me. Aside from the mythological roots, I just think it sounds cool.
[name]Sophie[/name] - It’s just pretty, and I have only positive associations with the name.

Girl
[name]Lotus[/name]- [name]One[/name] of my favorite flowers. My name is [name]Tara[/name]; [name]Tara[/name] is a Buddhist goddess. She is often depicted holding a lotus flower and sitting in lotus position in a giant lotus blossom.

[name]Tallulah[/name]- I just love the sound and that it is so rare and controversial. People either love it or hate it

[name]Aviva[/name]- [name]Love[/name] the energy. [name]Viva[/name]!

[name]Noor[/name]- Means light but also makes me think of noir (black). So I get an image of light and dark, like a moonlit night

Unisex
[name]Linden[/name]- [name]Love[/name] the strength and serenity

[name]Greer[/name]- Has an old Hollywood feel; very sophisticated

[name]Blaise[/name]- [name]Fire[/name]- strong and cleansing

Boy
[name]Ashley[/name]- Dashing and so Southern. The first [name]Ashley[/name] I met was my cousin and I’ve always loved him. Growing up he was always sweet to me when my other cousins were awful (out of 30+ grandchildren I’m the 3rd youngest). He gave me permission to use his name since he’s never wanted an [name]Ashley[/name] [name]Jr[/name].

[name]Shea[/name]- It’s soft and strong, perfect for a Southern gentlemen

[name]Lachlan[/name]- I’m a water baby; raised in a beach town. I love water-related names
