Why [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] and [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] but not Gillingham or Hastings?
Why [name_u]Devon[/name_u] not [name_m]Dorset[/name_m]?
And why has [name_f]Miami[/name_f] never taken off but other US place names are popular?
What do you think makes one place name work and not another.
well i have Nottingham and a few others on my list …so I think any place name could work in general. Some sound nicer than others,
People tend to like/be more comfortable with things that are familiar. So since many people have known or met an [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] or [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] or [name_u]London[/name_u] or whatever, it seems normal and usable. Madrid or Kiev or Taiwan, not so much. I have a lot of random place names on my guilty pleasures list though- [name_f]Amalfi[/name_f], Dubrovnik, [name_f]Malta[/name_f], [name_f]Andorra[/name_f], Swansea, Puglia…
Go there. You’ll soon change your mind.
Some place-names scream place louder than others.
Haha I know what you mean though- there are towns around here with pretty names like [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] and Orillia and [name_m]Caledon[/name_m] that are really not that special, not a place you’d name your kid after.
Ha, I feel the same about most UK place names - even hearing [name_u]London[/name_u] I just feel like… what? [name_u]Kendall[/name_u] is tolerable, as a place and a name, but I wouldn’t name my child after it.
I’ve seen Grimsby on here. GRIMSBY. I mean… wtf?
Lol! Oh dear. But yeah, I cringe when I hear any British place name talked about as if it’s wistful and romantic. They’re fine as cities but I loathe them all on people.
Well, personally I can’t stand the majority of place names on people. I completely don’t understand [name_u]London[/name_u] as a name. Most of them don’t sound like names and are much too strongly associated with the place
@oliviasarah I’m a grimsby girl and would never ever ever ever consider this a name
haha, crazy, I know.
‘‘Welcoming baby Grimsby, who joins older sisters Slough, Rhyl and Stoke-on-[name_m]Trent[/name_m]’’.
I swear if I see [name_f]Brighton[/name_f] or [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] as a name once more…it’s like naming your kid Toronto or Montreal, just don’t do it. The only nice sounding place names for me are;
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f],
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u],
[name_u]Camden[/name_u] (I only like [name_u]Camden[/name_u] because I dislike [name_u]Cameron[/name_u]'s meaning but I like the nn [name_u]Cam[/name_u] on a boy)
[name_u]Kendall[/name_u]
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] (does this one count?)
[name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Ailsa[/name_f]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f]
[name_f]Sienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]India[/name_f]
[name_f]Verona[/name_f] ([name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] made this one attractive for me)
[name_u]Kerry[/name_u]/[name_f]Kerrie[/name_f]
[name_u]Ainsley[/name_u]'s nice on other people’s children, but not my own.
Ooh I’ve always loved [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], why had I forgotten about it? It’s like a really pretty [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]/[name_f]Sienna[/name_f] hybrid and is kind of nostalgic for me.
But I guess Austrians would think it’s just as stupid as [name_u]London[/name_u] as Brits think [name_u]London[/name_u] is as a name (the only Londons I’ve known are Americans, and a Canadian).
[name_u]London[/name_u]'s only a name over here I believe I don’t know about [name_f]Vienna[/name_f], but I know quite a few girls in the UK named [name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
