Might first IMPRESSIONS (since you asked for those) are
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Cormac[/name] (nn [name]Cory[/name]?)
[name]Wilbur[/name] makes me think of a country bumpkin (so sorry!)
[name]Cormac[/name] is handsome and distinguished. I also think of [name]Cormac[/name] [name]McCarthy[/name]- which is not a bad thing- and an Irishman.
[name]Cormac[/name] I like esp the nn of [name]Mac[/name].
[name]Wilbur[/name] is a bit boring but I am warming to his cousin [name]Wilfred[/name] nn Wilf which reminds me [name]Rolf[/name] and [name]Wolf[/name] which a certain charm too.
Of course I like [name]Wilson[/name] with the nn of [name]Will[/name], very cool and today. Combo [name]Wilson[/name] [name]Cormac[/name].
[name]Cormac[/name] is a serious contender for our baby due in [name]May[/name].
My husband loves it, especially the potential to use [name]Mac[/name] as a nn (we’re Scottish), although I quite liked [name]Cor[/name] which is the name of a prince in the Chronicles of [name]Narnia[/name].
My only concern is the meaning of the name ‘[name]Cormac[/name]’. I’ve done a lot of research and found a couple of different interpretations but the same ugly one keeps rearing it’s head: ‘impure or defiled son’. Ick.
Now my name means ‘bright, shining girl’ and I was always happy to share that when anyone asked, e.g. at school.
If I can get past the meaning by [name]May[/name] then I’ll be using it. Or I’ll just selectively choose another understanding of the name.
Maybe showing my age but [name]Wilbur[/name] automatically makes me think of Mr [name]Ed[/name], the talking horse. So don’t like that.
[name]Love[/name] [name]Cormac[/name], love [name]Cormac[/name] [name]McCarthy[/name]'s books as well so that’s a plus. I’m not bothered by the meaning. I go more for ‘son of the raven’ as it’s close to ‘corbie’.
I love [name]Cormac[/name]–I think it has a nice masculine sound.
I thought of Mr. [name]Ed[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name]'s [name]Web[/name] as soon as I saw [name]Wilbur[/name]. To me, it has a definite rural, farm feel. Not sure if that appeals to you or if it would have the same feel in [name]Britain[/name].
I understand what you’re saying, treefrog. One of the names I’ve always liked was very similar to Cormac…“Corbin”. As a young teen helping at Vacation Bible School one summer, I heard it and fell in love. I’ve been married for almost 2 yrs now and when my husband and I first started talking about names and babies, I of course brought this one up to him. He really doesn’t like it at all tho, so I finally let go of it; like the meaning of Cormac, Corbin’s meaning does not appeal to either of us… “raven, dark-haired”. We want to choose a name to accent his personality, not appearance. However, in my search, I found the name Corban, meaning “offering or God’s gift”. I liked the meaning, but after a while, I’ve given up this name too. It’s just not OUR style; might be mine, but when you have a baby, it’s best to realize that there are so many wonderful names that we can agree on together and ultimately, our baby will be happiest with mom AND dad’s imput and agreement ! To be honest, as much as I may disagree with him, I really am glad to have a man with his own opinion! I thought I might suggest it tho to those of you who may be looking for some other alternatives for Cormac. Who knows? It may be just the right fit for your style!
I like [name]Cormac[/name] but [name]Wilbur[/name] just makes me think of the pig from [name]Charlotte[/name]'s [name]Web[/name].
I agree with what most people have said. We have a [name]Cormac[/name] at our school and I think it’s a lovely name. When I say [name]Wilbur[/name], I hear it in Mr. [name]Ed[/name]'s horse-voice. I also think of [name]Charlotte[/name]'s [name]Web[/name]. Alternates may be [name]Wilson[/name], [name]William[/name], [name]Willfred[/name], or [name]Willis[/name]. Good luck!
