Wilfred?

Met a little boy called this, nicknamed Wilfie, thought it was adorable. Also met a [name]Gilbert[/name] which I wasn’t so keen on, especially as his nickname seems to be [name]Gilly[/name]. What’s your opinion? [name]Do[/name] you like these sort of vintage names that have come back into fashion?

I’m a sucker for vintage names so I really like that all these ‘old people’ names are making a comeback over here. I prefer [name]Gilbert[/name] to [name]Wilfred[/name] (although I like the NNs [name]Gil[/name] and [name]Bertie[/name] more than [name]Gilly[/name]) but Wilfie is very cute. Actually a lot of these vintage ‘ee’-ending names are cute: [name]Alfie[/name], [name]Archie[/name], [name]Harry[/name], [name]Bobby[/name], [name]Charlie[/name], [name]Louie[/name], [name]Freddie[/name], [name]Teddy[/name]…

I like [name]Alfred[/name] more than [name]Wilfred[/name].

[name]Gilbert[/name] is wonderful, but mainly because of [name]Gilbert[/name] [name]Blythe[/name] from [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables. I like the [name]Gil[/name] nickname.

Along the same lines, [name]Edmund[/name] falls a little into that camp. I like the nickname, [name]Ned[/name], for it.

[name]Wilfred[/name] just makes me think of the TV show, and I have family with the last name [name]Gilbert[/name], so I could never use it. But I think the nn [name]Gil[/name] is nice.

I prefer [name]Gilbert[/name], especially because of the [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables association.

[name]Wilfred[/name] of [name]Ivanhoe[/name]! I love the name [name]Wilfred[/name], it’s on my new baby list. I find it dashing and smashing and soooo romantic. [name]Gilbert[/name] is nice too (I too love [name]Anne[/name] of [name]Green[/name] Gables), but [name]Wilfred[/name] is more fun.

I really like both [name]Wilfred[/name] & [name]Gilbert[/name]. I remember being really upset upon finding out just how trendy [name]Wilfred[/name] was. So, on the question of whether I like this vintage resurgence trend in the UK, I love this type of name so much but I hate that it has made some of my favourites too popular/trendy. First, I took [name]Henry[/name] off my first name list about 7 years ago & then I took [name]Arthur[/name] off a few years ago, & now I’m considering removing [name]Albert[/name] :frowning: I strongly dislike the vintage nickname trend referenced above though.

[name]Caro[/name], you do realise [name]Wilfred[/name]‘s ranked at #305? That’s 146 babies! I know it’s had an upswing, but it’'s not that much…

[name]Wilfred[/name] is one of my favourites for boys - I [name]LOVE[/name] Wilf/Wilfie/[name]Wolf[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name]. So cute. My English teacher recently named his baby [name]Wilfred[/name] 0swald ([name]Wilfred[/name] after [name]Wilfred[/name] [name]Owens[/name], naturally, as an English teacher - he goes by Wilf) which makes me love it even more.
I also love [name]Wilbur[/name], [name]Winston[/name], [name]William[/name]. [name]Gilbert[/name] is also sweet, but there is something about it which puts me off. Maybe the ‘[name]Gil[/name]’ part? [name]Bertie[/name] is cute - it’s on my list as a nickname for [name]Bertram[/name] though.

I know at least 2 little boys with each of those names. They’re everywhere in the UK! Also - Albi, [name]Billie[/name], [name]Herbie[/name]. I even know a [name]Willy[/name]. The same goes for girls - [name]Daisy[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], [name]Millie[/name], [name]Molly[/name], [name]Annie[/name], [name]Tabby[/name], [name]Ellie[/name], [name]Gracie[/name], [name]Kitty[/name], [name]Katie[/name], [name]Evie[/name], [name]Ruby[/name].

That’s true, I’d actually misremembered it as being higher, thank you! I think what happened is that I was frightened away by a huge jump up, & then met three baby Wilfreds in quick succession (though I was living in [name]North[/name] [name]London[/name]). Then it imprinted in my mind as ‘trendy’. Also, I’m lucky in that [name]Wilford[/name] is my mother’s maiden name, so I could just switch allegiance!

Whilst I have you, I don’t think I said properly how much I loved your final name choice, ottilie! [name]Rosalind[/name] is so pretty, congrats

I’m not awfully keen on [name]Gilbert[/name], but I’d rather [name]Bertie[/name] as a nickname rather than [name]Gil/name. Wilf on its pwn reminds of the [name]Magic[/name] Key books I learnt to read with in primary school but [name]Wilfred[/name] reminds me of that creepy, creepy programme with [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Wood[/name] where [name]Wilfred[/name] was a man in a dog suit. I haven’t even seen it, but I had the misfortune of seeing the advert. :o

I prefer [name]Albert[/name] and [name]Alfred[/name] and I absolutely adore [name]Bertie[/name] and [name]Freddy[/name] as nicknames.

  • [name]Bert[/name] is a sound I simply cannot get behind, nor ‘ilf.’ Something about that short i.

I would like to say, I think it’s fascinating that these Germanic names are in vogue again in the UK, whereas not yet in the US. I would have thought it would be the other way around, given how many more people of Germanic descent live here, and the relative psychological burdens of WWI & WWII on each country.

Maybe it’s an aspirational thing, given [name]German[/name]'s current economic superiority in Europe through the Euro?!

[name]Just[/name] no. It reminds me of [name]Harvey[/name] and [name]Albert[/name].

[name]Wilfred[/name] reminds me of the tv show with [name]Elijah[/name] [name]Wood[/name], unfortunately. Though I don’t love the sound of the name in the first place, that connection ruins it for me.

I do like [name]Alfred[/name]; however, because you can get the amazing nn [name]Alfie[/name]!!

I don’t particularly like [name]Wilfred[/name]… and don’t like Wilfie. I think if I were going to use the nn [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name], I would just name my child [name]Frederick[/name] (which is just soo handsome!)

I do like the trend though… I think [name]Winfield[/name] would be a wonderful name to bring back. I don’t know about the nn [name]Winnie[/name] (sounds feminine maybe?), but I think for a nn [name]Win[/name] would be just fine!
