Wilhelmina and Wilhelm

2-part discussion here. First of all, I’ve fallen back in love with one of my favorite combos for our next girl: [name]Wilhelmina[/name] [name]Lou[/name] nn “[name]Minnie[/name]” (would be a sister to our daughter, [name]Rosamund[/name] “[name]Rosie[/name]” [name]Hazel[/name]). [name]Both[/name] names are family names from both sides of our family. So, first off, thoughts on [name]Wilhelmina[/name] [name]Lou[/name]?

Secondly, our relative has said that his favorite boys name is [name]Wilhelm[/name] [name]Ludwig[/name] nn [name]Will[/name] (Yes, our family’s are [name]German[/name]). I should mention that I’ve told him we like [name]Wilhelmina[/name] and he doesn’t mind have similarly named (potential) children, in fact he thinks it’s kind of neat. Plus, they would be going by [name]Minnie[/name] and [name]Will[/name] mostly, and hardly ever their full names. [name]Do[/name] you think that’s OK to have such a close name to a relative, especially since the nicknames are different? or is it just too weird?

Since your relative said he’s fine with it, and since [name]Wilhelmina[/name] is two syllables longer than [name]Wilhelm[/name] and would have a different nickname, I’d say go for it! [name]Wilhelmina[/name] is gorgeous.

[name]Love[/name] [name]Wilhelmina[/name] [name]Lou[/name] nn [name]Minnie[/name]! [name]Minnie[/name] has to be one of my favorite nn’s for [name]Wilhelmina[/name]. I do find it very odd since [name]Wilhelm[/name] is in [name]Wilhelmina[/name], it’s kinda like giving them the same name to me.

Thanks for the [name]Wilhelmina[/name] love! It will be interesting to see if it gains any popularity from [name]Taylor[/name] [name]Hanson[/name] using it for his daughter!

I must add that the situation with our relative is hypothetical because he’s just engaged and hasn’t approved his top names with his fiancee yet, so that’s only if she agrees to [name]Wilhelm[/name]! And I’m not actually pregnant yet, but TTCing baby #2, so who knows what gender our next baby will be anyhow. Thanks for the responses so far!

I think it’s totally fine, especially with nicknames. My uncle married a woman with the same name as his mother and it’s not usually a problem, even though they now have the same last name. [name]Wilhelmina[/name] [name]Lou[/name] and [name]Rosamund[/name] [name]Hazel[/name] are both gorgeous!

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Wilhelmina[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] the simplicity of [name]Lou[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] sweet nickname [name]Minnie[/name]. So basically all I have to say is what a perfect name!

I think because of the different genders & very different sounding nicknames & especially because it’s already out in the open that you both like these names I think it’s fine. [name]Just[/name] revisit the conversation if you still feel kind of awkward about it.

[name]Both[/name] are guilty pleasure names for me! They are similar names, but they’ll go by nn’s and he’s ok with it, so I don’t see a problem. And I love the [name]Lou[/name] as a mn. Mine is [name]Louise[/name], and my family nn is [name]Lou[/name], [name]Sari[/name] [name]Lou[/name], [name]Louie[/name], etc.

I’s a great name!

I think having a [name]Wilhelmina[/name] and a [name]Wilhelm[/name] in one family is fine. I don’t know how [name]German[/name] your family is but [name]Minnie[/name] sounds much nicer to me in [name]German[/name] than [name]Will[/name] does. I could see [name]Will[/name] turning into [name]Willy[/name] for Germans and then you’d have [name]Millie[/name] and [name]Willy[/name] but even that wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I stay stick with the name you love (and that sound beautiful and amazing).

I wouldn’t worry about this at all. With parents on board for it, different nicknames, and it being a family name, I don’t know why you wouldn’t do this : D!
