Will as a stand-alone?

So lately I’ve been crushing on [name_m]Will[/name_m] as a name because i heard it on a soap that I’ve been watching and the guy is really sweet. Now, I really love just [name_m]Will[/name_m]. I do like [name_m]William[/name_m] but i feel like if i was to call my child [name_m]William[/name_m] then it wouldn’t be because I love [name_m]William[/name_m], it would be because I love [name_m]Will[/name_m]. I have looked into other [name_m]Will[/name_m]- names and the only one i like is [name_m]Willson[/name_m] but it looks weird (I dont like [name_m]Wilson[/name_m]). Can [name_m]Will[/name_m] work as a stand alone or should I stick to [name_m]William[/name_m]? Thanks!

I think it works well on its own.

I think [name_m]Will[/name_m] works fine on its own. I definitely prefer it as a full name to [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

I’ve known a few [name_m]Wills[/name_m]! I think it’s definitely usable as a stand alone.

I think it’s fine! I do think most [name_m]Williams[/name_m] become their nickname of choice and are rarely [name_m]William[/name_m] full time, so either way works. However, if you love [name_m]Will[/name_m] then I would encourage you to pick that rather than picking a name just to get to a nickname!

I think it totally works alone, but if you like [name_m]Wilson[/name_m], I think you can absolutelyuse that spelling and still spell [name_m]Will[/name_m] with 2 “l”'s. But I like just [name_m]Will[/name_m], too!

[name_m]Will[/name_m] is a great name and I can see how you’d want it rather than [name_m]William[/name_m]. I used to feel that way about [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].

It’s fine to go with [name_m]Will[/name_m], but it gives your son more options to go with [name_m]William[/name_m]. You could always call him [name_m]Will[/name_m], but he might eventually prefer [name_m]Bill[/name_m], [name_m]Liam[/name_m], [name_u]Willie[/name_u], [name_m]Wilkie[/name_m], or some other nickname.

[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

He will go his whole life having to explain, “[name_m]Will[/name_m]. No, not [name_m]William[/name_m]. [name_m]JUST[/name_m] [name_m]WILL[/name_m]. My parents named me [name_m]JUST[/name_m] [name_m]Will[/name_m].” Ugh. If you don’t like the whole name, at all, I’d pick something different. Make it easy on the guy for the rest of his life. There are so many other choices.

I agree about [name_m]Will[/name_m] as a stand alone (but I’m very much one of those name-them-what-you’ll call kind of people.) It sounds nicer than [name_m]William[/name_m]. You should do it.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Y’all are starting to convince me!

Personally, I would stick with [name_m]William[/name_m]. There’s nothing wrong with picking it not for itself but for a nickname you love, in fact I often find names I like by doing it that way. Also love [name_m]Will[/name_m] as a nickname, but just think that it is also nice to have a formal name to use if he ever wants to.
