I was shocked to find that neither [name_f]Candace[/name_f] nor [name_f]Candice[/name_f] (a variant spelling) are in the current US top 1000 and had dropped off around 2005. It seems like a posh, streamlined, relatively modern name. It peaked in the mid-80s but to me it doesn’t feel tarnished by the 80s. I’m surprised it’s no longer being used and yet names like [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] and [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] are (both wildly popular 80s names).
So what do you think? Why did [name_f]Candace[/name_f] fall out of national favor? Would you use it or would you like to meet a baby named [name_f]Candace[/name_f]?
I’d love to hear any and all opinions/speculation!
I don’t foresee it coming back onto the top 1000 list for some time, unless something happens to make it jump up quickly (i.e. a popular movie comes out and uses the name, a big celebrity picks it, etc.). That’s not to say it’s in any way bad though. I agree with you, it doesn’t sound dated in the same way that [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] does, but it’s not what I would describe as “in style” as far as the current trends are concerned, which might explain why it’s fallen off the top names list all together. All in all, I think it’s a sweet name. I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Candace[/name_f]!
I don’t think it’ll be back until [name_f]Candace[/name_f] [name_u]Cameron[/name_u] Bure is off the View and [name_m]Fuller[/name_m] House goes away. It’s keeping it firmly in mom territory for me.
[name_m]Ah[/name_m] I love, love [name_f]Candace[/name_f] and we considered it for our new baby. I guess I only have known a few, so it’s definitely not dated in my mind. I imagine nn [name_f]Candy[/name_f] may have contributed to its unpopularity though.
I agree that [name_f]Candy[/name_f] probably had a lot to do with her demise. I also think the parents who might have once been inclined toward [name_f]Candace[/name_f] may choose [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u] or [name_f]Cadence[/name_f] as alternatives of a similar style that have largely retained their popularity over the very period in which [name_f]Candace[/name_f] steeply declined. Personally really like [name_f]Candace[/name_f]. I’d like to meet one.
I think [name_f]Candace[/name_f] is rather pretty, and I agree with you about it feeling like a more posh option, as opposed to other 80s favourites.
I think [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f] maintained popularity over [name_f]Candace[/name_f] because they are easily recognizable, easy to say and spell, and have lasted from about the 1960s to the early 2000s in terms of top 100 usage. Both were also #1 names for many years, which usually means they fall a lot more gracefully from the top than names like [name_f]Candace[/name_f] or [name_f]Brandy[/name_f], that never met the same heights.
I think [name_f]Candy[/name_f] could have played a part in her demise, however I know a handful of women named [name_f]Candace[/name_f]/[name_f]Candice[/name_f]/[name_f]Kandice[/name_f], and none go by [name_f]Candy[/name_f] - the only [name_f]Candy[/name_f] I know has this on her birth certificate lol.
I think part of it is that, she just never reached the same popularity that other names did, and therefore fell out of favour much quicker, a la [name_f]Desiree[/name_f]. Also, I have heard comments before that the sound of the name is rather unpleasant (i think it’s an accent thing?), as it closely resembles “canned a**” in sound, at least where I’ve heard/seen these comments anyways.
This is a really good observation! [name_u]Cassidy[/name_u], [name_f]Cadence[/name_f], and perhaps even [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] proved to have a greater pull towards parents. Maybe because they’re a little bit more feminine and princess-like? [name_f]Candace[/name_f] almost has a subtle masculine undertone- to me it almost sounds unisex.
@lawsonhaley I think you’re right, [name_f]Candace[/name_f] didn’t have a firm grip on popularity to begin with. I think it’s a shame the nickname [name_f]Candy[/name_f] is tied to [name_f]Candace[/name_f]. In my opinion, [name_f]Candace[/name_f] is already so short it wouldn’t need a nickname. But if someone had to have one, I think [name_f]Annie[/name_f] or [name_f]Andie[/name_f] would be cute.
