Will everyone just say Katie?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! We are expecting this year. For a girl I love [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. But I am concerned everyone will call her [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. To me, that is a very different name! What do you all think? Know any [name_f]Kate[/name_f]'s that get called [name_f]Katie[/name_f]? Any middle name ideas as well would be appreciated!

If you insist that she is [name_f]Kate[/name_f] from the beginning you should be fine. I know a [name_f]Kate[/name_f] that is never called [name_f]Katie[/name_f].

I know a [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and I have never heard anyone call her [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. They feel like very different names to me too.

I think there will be people, usually older (in their sixties and up) who will either prefer [name_f]Katie[/name_f], not think anything of using it, or who will mis-hear [name_f]Katie[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. I introduce myself exclusively as [name_f]Kate[/name_f] at work and get called [name_f]Katie[/name_f] by guests maybe once a week or a little less (or more rarely, [name_f]Caitlin[/name_f]). Having grown up as a [name_f]Katie[/name_f] I don’t mind it a bit (but it is weird to hear people other than my oldest friends and family using it!).

But no I don’t think everyone will jump to [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] like I would never call a [name_f]Jen[/name_f] ‘[name_f]Jenny[/name_f]’ unless we went waaaaay back and I knew she was fine with it.

(as an aside, sometimes I do wish I went by [name_f]Katie[/name_f] more now, especially since I’m frequently on the phone for work. People seem to hear/understand two syllable names better than an abrupt one like [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. Oddly I have people think I’m saying [name_u]Cade[/name_u] or [name_m]Case[/name_m]. But ultimately I do love my name (ok all of them, [name_f]Kate[/name_f], [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]!) and wouldn’t change!)

I have a friend named [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] who goes solely by [name_f]Kate[/name_f]. As far as I know, she never gets called [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I don’t think people would jump to [name_f]Katie[/name_f], but she might decide she prefers [name_f]Katie[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Kate[/name_f] over [name_f]Katie[/name_f] and I think as long as she grows up called [name_f]Kate[/name_f] her friends will call her that too

I agree with all of this, minus the fact that my name isn’t [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Katie[/name_f]!

I know several Kates and they have never, ever been called [name_f]Katie[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Kate[/name_f]! All the [name_f]Kate[/name_f]'s I know are very different from the [name_f]Katie[/name_f]'s I know (and I know a fair few, having attended a Catholic university…we actually called my roommate [name_f]Katie[/name_f] 80 because there were so many in our class). So I don’t think many people will call her [name_f]Katie[/name_f] by accident–because you’re right, it’s a totally different name for a totally different person.

(And don’t worry, my roommate [name_f]Katie[/name_f] 80 thought it was very hilarious that she had a number, otherwise we wouldn’t have continued it).

I have an auntie called [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and, although all of my family call her [name_f]Kate[/name_f] (we are not blood, she is my blood-uncle’s wife), her family call her [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I think it just depends if the family call her it and people catch on so if you kept with [name_f]Kate[/name_f], I don’t think [name_f]Katie[/name_f] will be the nickname! I also knew a little girl called [name_f]Kate[/name_f] and it was just [name_f]Kate[/name_f]… No [name_f]Katie[/name_f]!

No. I know several [name_f]Kate[/name_f]'s that are only [name_f]Kate[/name_f].

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister is named [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad always calls her [name_f]Kate[/name_f] since he likes that nn, but almost everyone else calls her [name_f]Katie[/name_f]. I think sometimes it is hard to have control over your child’s nicknames.

What about spelling it [name_f]Cate[/name_f]? Might be harder to jump to ‘[name_f]Katie[/name_f]’ from that. Like [name_f]Cate[/name_f] Blanchett.
