Will the tragedy in Colorado affect the popularity of Aurora?

What do you think? [name]Will[/name] more people use it in support of those affected by the tragedy? Or will they avoid it because they consider it tainted by what happened? Or do you think it is popular enough already that it won’t really be affected either way?

I doubt it’ll have much impact. While not super popular, [name]Aurora[/name] is common enough that people have plenty to relate it to besides a shooting. Also, it’s the name of a Disney princess, so that always going to provide some appeal. Honestly, people have such short memories when it comes to these things that in a few months, the majority of the public (not to mention the media) will have moved onto something else. [name]Katrina[/name] took a big hit after the hurricane but that’s because it affected thousands of people and the effects were felt for months/years after. I’m sure there will be some parents who decide not to go with [name]Aurora[/name] for their daughters born in [name]July[/name] and [name]August[/name] (especially those in [name]Colorado[/name]) but by [name]September[/name] I think most people will have moved past the association.

Hmm … this is something I hadn’t considered. I’ve never had the desire to name a child [name]Aurora[/name], so I can’t speak for myself. Honestly, I don’t know how the tragedy will affect the popularity of the name. I could see people using the name in support, but I can also see people avoiding it. I guess it could go either way.

I don’t really see the number of girls named [name]Aurora[/name] decreasing over this. [name]Prior[/name] to the incident, we had the Disney princess as a likeable association. Also, this is unlike the [name]Columbine[/name] shooting, which had no widely known positive association behind it. The first time anyone had heard “[name]Columbine[/name]”, it was only in the news regarding the tragedy, not as the name of a person or character.

I agree. [name]Just[/name] want to add something. Most parents won’t choose name of a Disney princess, just for it’s sake. They usually want something that fits the adult, and name that people connect with princesses and child stories is not the best option.

Not at all.
I doubt the name [name]James[/name] is going to take a hit, and I really don’t see [name]Aurora[/name] taking one either. Too many strong well known positive connotations: Disney [name]Princess[/name] and Northern Lights.

If it were me, I wouldn’t use the name in the coming months unless I really had my heart set on it months before. But a year from now probably.
