Will these names be popular soon?

Hello nameberry!

I was wondering if some of you name statistic experts could take a look at my girls’ list and tell me which of the names on my list are going to become more popular in the next few years, or less popular, or stay around the same place. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if you aren’t an expert on this, I would love your opinion based on how many you know of! I would hate for a unique name that I love now to become insanely popular by the time I have kids (Probably in about 10 years, which may be hard to predict, but it’s okay if you can just try to predict popularity for the next few years).

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilac[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]

Thanks so much!

I’m not great with stats and this doesn’t predict where the name is really going to go but check out this site Flora - Popularity of Flora, How Popular Is the name Flora?.

It let’s you plug in a name and see what it’s popularity has been. I feel like one can probably predict approx where the numbers are going to be by trend - of course not over the long run and of course not if there is another Twilight phenomenon etc.

[name_m]Just[/name_m] to clarify, I’m no statistic expert on names by any means but I adore these names so much!

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]-- I doubt it.
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]-- Possibly, due to the rise of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]. But I don’t see that happening within the next five years.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]-- This one is a definite possibility. With the L name trends like [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and [name_f]Layla[/name_f] this one only makes sense.
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]-- This one is a bit out there, so I doubt it.
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]-- See [name_f]Marigold[/name_f].
[name_f]Olive[/name_f]-- Another possibility. Considering it’s [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Barrymore’s daughter’s name, and [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] are mega popular, [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is on track to get popular.
[name_u]Echo[/name_u]-- This one is another “out there” one. I say no.
[name_f]Clover[/name_f]-- There is a trend for names ending in -er and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u] are popular, so it COULD… I just don’t see it happening in the next five years.
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]-- Same here as with clover. It’s an -er nature name and [name_u]June[/name_u] is becoming more mainstream.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]-- Oh I love this name so much. But [name_m]Bruce[/name_m] [name_m]Willis[/name_m]’ daughter [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_u]Ray[/name_u] and the rising popularity of [name_f]Mae[/name_f] as a middle could make it rise.
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]-- To me, this doesn’t fit the style of your other names on here. This feels very dated. Now, maybe [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] will go up, but not [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f].
[name_u]Hero[/name_u]-- This is a very cool name. I feel the same way about this one as I do [name_u]Echo[/name_u].
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]-- Definitely. I work in a preschool and the main classroom I’m in had two Lilys a few months ago, and one of other kids had a sister named [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and there is another [name_f]Lily[/name_f] in an infant room AND the teacher of the infant room has a daughter named [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. SO I know a ton of Lilys. I still love [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] though.
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]-- I mentioned this name above.
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]-- This still feels dated to me. But I mean all it takes is one celebrity to have the guts to use it, and it would leave me shocked that the parents that would go for the name.
[name_f]Lilac[/name_f]-- Although it’s less popular, I prefer the very popular [name_f]Lily[/name_f].
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]-- Such a sweet vintage name. This is the middle of one of the little girls in my main preschool class.

This list is so interesting! The only names I really didn’t like were [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] and [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]/[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]. Regardless of how popular these are in the next few years, you should still use some of these. [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. <— How adorable are those?!

Bolded means yes, I think it will be popular.

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] - I doubt it. Most people aren’t on board with the whole “vintage chic” thing outside of Nameberry.
[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] - Same. I associate the name with “alcoholic [name_m]French[/name_m] receptionist”, not “trendy two-year-old girl.”
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] - This one I think will definitely rise significantly in popularity. What with the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character and the cutesy, simple sound, this one is ripe for usage.
[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] - it’s a fairly obscure flower. I think you’re safe.
[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] - I’ve seen it getting some hits on [name_u]Berry[/name_u] forums, but I don’t think it’ll crack the top 200.
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] - after [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] has had its heyday, [name_f]Olive[/name_f] will seem too close to use (that’s why [name_u]Jess[/name_u] and [name_u]Jessie[/name_u] have disappeared after [name_f]Jessica[/name_f]'s hour in the sun).
[name_u]Echo[/name_u] - Probably too “weird” for most common namers to use.
[name_f]Clover[/name_f] - again, a little out there. Also has a bovine feel to it.
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u] - I think a celebrity just used it, which always catapults names out of obscurity into the limelight. It has a similar feel to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], with a touch of quirkiness. I expect to see it used a lot in the future.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - see [name_f]Flora[/name_f].
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] - though [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] is already mega popular, [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] still gives me granny vibes.
[name_u]Hero[/name_u] - again, probably still in the “too weird” category for most.
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] - [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is exceptionally popular, and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] is already rising. Probably the most currently popular name on this list.
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] - fits in with the simplistic yet feminine sound that is rising in popularity.
[name_f]Martha[/name_f] - since most people associate it with the first American first lady and ye days of olde, probably not going to be gracing the charts any day.
[name_f]Lilac[/name_f] - it’s possible, with the popularity of [name_f]Lila[/name_f], and various other flower names, but it has an unusual sound to it (name popularity often comes in sounds; the “bella” names, the “ley” names, etc.).
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - too quirky.

this is an even better site: How Popular Will Your Name Be in 25 Years? | Time

I already know children named Olive, Opal, Juniper, Mabel and Martha. But really what does does it matter if you like it? You can’t ever completely predict the future and it isn’t so bad to have a name that reflects your place and date of birth is it? The USA seems really obsessed with being ‘different’.

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] and [name_f]Olive[/name_f] will definitely become quite popular in my opinion. [name_f]Lily[/name_f]/[name_f]Lilly[/name_f] is already really popular and it makes sense that parents will want a longer more formal version for the nickname. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it doesn’t, a girl called [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] would probably be called [name_f]Lily[/name_f] for short, and would be surrounded by other girls of that name. [name_f]Olive[/name_f] is already in the top 100 in Australia, and given the immense popularity of [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] is makes sense for it to become more popular.

There is no way to tell for sure (unless I had a time machine. That would be great :).), but I’ll have a crack at it:

[name_f]Flora[/name_f]- No. Unless you are in the UK, then it may follow [name_f]Florence[/name_f].

[name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]- It will rise, but I don’t think it will be mega popular.

[name_f]Luna[/name_f]- Yes. Definitely, as a sort of [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] / [name_f]Lana[/name_f] hybrid.

[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]- No. I don’t it will rise much.

[name_f]Magnolia[/name_f]- No. It might rise, but I don’t think it will become mainstream.

[name_f]Olive[/name_f]- Yes. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_m]Fisher[/name_m] and [name_u]Drew[/name_u] Barrymore both have [name_f]Olive[/name_f]'s, and this name is definitely on the rise, as an alternative to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f].

[name_u]Echo[/name_u]- No. Definitely not. [name_u]Echo[/name_u] was reduced to just an [name_u]Echo[/name_u], and the whole idea is a bit too odd for most baby namers (I do like it though).

[name_f]Clover[/name_f]- Maybe, following [name_u]Juniper[/name_u], but not until after [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] peaks.

[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]- Yes. It has the elements of [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] / [name_f]Julia[/name_f] rolled into a cute and sprightly nature name. I think this name will rise a lot.

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]- Yes. I don’t think it will become mega popular, but I think it will become more popular.

[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]- No. Too buttoned up for mainstream parents.

[name_u]Hero[/name_u]- No. To ‘out there’ for mainstream taste.

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]- Yes, I think so. I know a few [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]'s, and it is a good quiet classic: I think it will rise.

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]- I know 2 [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]'s. I think it will become more popular, maybe breaking into the Top 100, as an alternative to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], but I don’t think it will be the next [name_f]Emily[/name_f].

[name_f]Martha[/name_f]- In the UK, yes. In Australia and the US, I can’t see it happening.

[name_f]Lilac[/name_f]- Maybe, but probably another 10 years, as an alternative to [name_f]Lila[/name_f] and [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

[name_f]Opal[/name_f]- If [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] becomes popular, then yes. If [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] doesn’t, then I don’t think [name_f]Opal[/name_f] will become mainstream.

Yes, usually better but it won’t graph names not in their database. So if you look up my current favorite, Endora, you don’t get a result on the Time site. Though for more popular names the Time site is preferable.

Thanks everyone! You all gave me mostly good news, which is great! For those of you who were confused by [name_f]Lucinda[/name_f] on my list, I thought that it would be a good way to get to [name_f]Indie[/name_f] since I don’t like nickname names and [name_f]India[/name_f] seems to be too controversial! If anyone has any other ways to get to [name_f]Indie[/name_f] that seem to fit my style more though, I would love to hear them!
