Will these names become dated?

We like these names but are wondering if you think they will become dated?

[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
[name_m]Beckham[/name_m]
[name_u]Bentley[/name_u]

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] & [name_u]Bentley[/name_u]- yes.

[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] & [name_u]Rowan[/name_u]- maybe, though I personally don’t see these as being nearly as trendy as [name_m]Asher[/name_m] or [name_u]Bentley[/name_u].

[name_m]Monty[/name_m] & [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]- no, both are classics that have been common in use at many different points in time and never really seem to go out of style, imo. There are a lot of little Olivers being born lately, though!

[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] and [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] totally. [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] is the soccer player. [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] got its popularity from 16 and pregnant. [name_m]Asher[/name_m] [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Monty[/name_m] have history. [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] idk

[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] yes, [name_m]Monty[/name_m] maybe, [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] will not be dated imo

[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] will totally be dated! [name_m]Asher[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] both fit into the current trend of softer, natural boy names so maybe a little dated… not nearly as much so! [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] is a classic so in my opinion it will never sound dated but it is more popular this generation than the past couple generations so if your definition of dated is people will be able to guess his birth year by his name… maybe? I don’t find [name_m]Monty[/name_m] at all trendy, popular, easily dated…
All that said, I’m sure it varies by region. Also I don’t think dated is the worst thing in the world. My son’s name has been trending the last decade and will be considered dated when he’s a dad… definitely my least favorite thing about his name… but I love everything else about it so who cares if when he’s 40 his name sounds like a 40 year old and when he’s 80 it’s an old man name… it’s still a good name!

I think from your list only [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] are safe from sounding dated in a decade or so.

[name_m]Monty[/name_m] may be ‘safe’ also - just have to wait and see how trendy it gets. ([name_m]Just[/name_m] starting its rise, I think). [name_m]Asher[/name_m] I’m unsure of… it seems trendy on nameberry, but not sure if this translates to the ‘outside world’.

[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] and [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] already sound dated to me - as in they hit their trendy peak 10 years ago.

Agree with this analysis!

[name_m]Asher[/name_m], [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] seem most likely to date.

[name_m]Asher[/name_m] & [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] will probably become dated in a sense that they’ll be reminiscent of the 2000s, as softer boys names are in trend now. I think they’re still a pretty safe bet, though.

[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] & [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] will most definitely be dated—they’re trendy, inspired by famous people + a car, sound very 2000s.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] has been used continually for decades, so I don’t think it will sound dated.

[name_m]Monty[/name_m] I can’t say—it’s not particularly popular or trendy, but it already sounds dated to me.

Btw, my assessment was on whether or not the names will date, not whether or not I like them! I do like them all with the exception of [name_u]Bentley[/name_u]/[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] just because of how trendy those are

The only name I don’t see the potential for dated-ness to arise anytime soon in [name_m]Monty[/name_m]. To me, whether a name becomes dated isn’t determined by how we categorize the name–whether it is “classic” for example. Rather, it is determined by whether people in the future will associate the name with people born during a certain time period. That, in turn, is determined by the popularity trend of the name over the time period that we can associate names with people we know or heard about…generally back to our great grandparents, maybe approximately 100 years. To be dated, a name has to be common enough at some point for the general population to recognize that it was definitely more common at a certain time in their memory…or it has to be associated with an event. So [name_m]Beckham[/name_m] might have increased potential for datedness due to [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Beckham[/name_m], and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] might have more dated-ness potential to the popularity of the car.

[name_f]Catina[/name_f] is the most trendy name I know of. I have come by a couple at my work (I’m a pharmacist) and before I look up their birthday I know it is 1972 or 1973. So a super namenerd might recognize this, but the general population probably wouldn’t know that it is an extremely dated name. Similarly, some of the popularity spikes of several of these names might not ever be as high (as popular during a few years) or as narrow (trendy–suddenly increase then decrease in popularity) for the general public recognize the dated-ness of the name.

Contrary to most responses, I think [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] has the most potential to become dated because it has become the most popular–and therefore more likely for laypeople to associate its use with a certain period of time. Maybe 2010 to 2025. [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] hasn’t experienced multiple popularity spikes over the past 100 years, like [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], for example, has. ([name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is the sort of classic name that has had multiple popularity spikes and is therefore not dated…you don’t meet a [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] and have a good idea when she was or wasn’t born) [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] might become somewhat like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f]. A classic name but with a clear increase in popularity. Broadly, you could fairly safely guess that [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] born in the 20th century was born between 1970 and 2010. Although [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] won’t become as popular as [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] was at the name’s peak and therefore will probably not be given to 5000 or more babies per year for as long, which is why I am guesstimating that it will be eventually dated to a shorter period of time than [name_f]Sarah[/name_f].

Having said all that, the bigger question to me is “Does dated-ness matter?” I don’t really think it does very much. Many, maybe most names can become dated to some extent. Trends are human nature. My best advice is simply to use a name you love.

[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] may not, and I don’t think [name_m]Monty[/name_m] is popular enough (in the US) to be associated with one generation. The others probably will though.

[name_m]Asher[/name_m]- A biblical name, won’t get dated.
[name_m]Monty[/name_m] - I didn’t know this was even in…
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] - A classic name, won’t get dated.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - I think this will get dated quickly.
[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] - This will be easily dated.
[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] - Never knew it was even in.

[name_m]Beckham[/name_m] and [name_m]Bently[/name_m] yea the rest seem pretty classic to me
