My husband and I are stuck naming our second son, and can’t decide between [name]George[/name] or [name]William[/name]. Our son is currently a baby of 2 weeks old and I’m trying to visualise him as a grown man and how he will feel when asked his name, introducing himself as either [name]George[/name] or [name]William[/name].
Which name do you think you would prefer to have? What character do you associate with the names [name]William[/name] and [name]George[/name]?
He has dark hair, will be tall and well built, if that helps!
Thanks very much for your help
[name]Jen[/name]
Two great names! You can’t go wrong with either. I’m leaning slightly towards [name]William[/name]. [name]Do[/name] you mind telling what your first son’s name is? That might help make your decision.
[name]William[/name] for sure. I always picture [name]George[/name] as a nerdy kind of guy. [name]William[/name] to me is regal and strong and just have a much more appealing sound to me. [name]Will[/name], [name]Willy[/name], [name]Bill[/name], [name]Billy[/name], [name]Liam[/name] (my favorite) are all great nicknames too.
[name]William[/name]. [name]George[/name] sounds clunky and choppy.
I agree with the others–I lean toward [name]William[/name] as well! [name]George[/name] is nice and I like it as a MN, but I agree that it either feels old fashioned or a bit nerdy as a FN. I imagine a [name]William[/name] being smart, handsome, kind, a good friend, maybe momma’s little boy. I think [name]William[/name] is so versatile, too–he could be anything from the princely [name]Will[/name] to the rough-and-tumble [name]Billy[/name] to the more European [name]Wim[/name] to the scalawag [name]Liam[/name].
I think [name]William[/name] has personality and class to fit just about anyone, and it sounds perfect for your little man.
Good luck!
Another for [name]William[/name]. Classic, sleek. [name]George[/name] is clunky.
While I have recently started to like [name]George[/name], I vote [name]William[/name].
[name]William[/name] sounds better, although it’s popularity turns me off.
I may be in the minority here on Nameberry but I’ve never been a fan of [name]William[/name]. I like the nn [name]Will[/name] much better than [name]William[/name] itself. I like the more uncommon [name]George[/name] - it’s classic and timeless like [name]William[/name] but a much less popular choice.
[name]George[/name] is fantastic!! [name]One[/name] of my favorites It strikes me as being very down to earth, handsome, and strong ([name]George[/name] [name]Clooney[/name] anyone???) [name]William[/name] is handsome and strong too, and also very regal… Not a bad thing I guess, but I don’t think it has that friendly, down to earth quality that I just love about [name]George[/name]. Plus [name]William[/name] is a top 5 boys name, [name]George[/name] is just as familiar, but so much fresher and unexpected!
[name]George[/name]!! I love it, plus [name]William[/name] is very popular now. I really love it too, but my vote goes to [name]George[/name].
I vote for [name]William[/name] for pretty much all the reasons previously mentioned. It has a nickname to fit every personality, it’s classy, it’s regal, and I just think it’s a warm, friendly name. It is popular, but not in a bad, trendy way. It’s just a classic!
I like [name]George[/name]. Its my great grandfather’s name and when I was a latchkey assistant there was a little boy named [name]George[/name] in the class. He was so sweet and adorable. I also think of [name]George[/name] [name]Bailey[/name] from Its a Wonderful Life. “[name]George[/name]” is a nice guy to me. [name]Will[/name] seems a little stuffy, like [name]Prince[/name] [name]William[/name]. I haven’t met any [name]Williams[/name] in real life (which seems odd now that I think about it because its so perennially popular).
I previously said I lean towards [name]William[/name] (and I stand by that), but I just think it’s so interesting that a lot of people think of [name]George[/name] as a clunky, nerdy name. To me it’s equally as strong, regal, handsome and classic as [name]William[/name]. That may be because I live in the UK?
[name]George[/name]. It’s my all-around favourite name, and if I’d had a second son, he’d have been [name]George[/name] [name]William[/name], which was my great-grandfather’s name. There’s something so strong and solid with [name]George[/name], and it has the most wonderful Scottish nn – [name]Geordie[/name], which I love. Also [name]Jordi[/name], which is [name]George[/name] in Catalan…Then you have St [name]George[/name] and the dragon.
[name]William[/name]! [name]George[/name] has always struck me as kind of nerdy, perhaps because all of the [name]Georges[/name] I’ve met have been kind of dorky. [name]William[/name] is much more handsome imo.
Definitely [name]George[/name]. For me feels stronger and more grounded.
I like both very much! [name]George[/name] would be the braver pick I guess. I’d choose the one that sounds best with your last name/ your first son’s name. Good luck
I like both, but much prefer [name]George[/name]. [name]George[/name] seems to have all of the benefits of [name]William[/name] but none of the drawbacks; to me, equally handsome, strong, classic and regal but much less popular and without some unpleasant nns ([name]Bill[/name]/[name]Billy[/name]/[name]Willy[/name], I also dislike trendy [name]Liam[/name]). I know many [name]Georges[/name], and they are all tall and well-built too, intelligent but not nerdy! As mentioned though, [name]George[/name] seems to be perceived more positively here in the UK.
