William, Thomas or Robert? Mn Jack. Any other suggestions welcome!

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,

We have narrowed down our options for boys names to three so far. Mn for all will be [name]Jack[/name], to honour DH’s grandfather who sadly died just before our wedding last year.

Our surname starts with M & is 3 syllables.

Which of these do you think works best? And any other suggestions for us? As you can see, we like traditional, probably rather old fashioned boys names.

[name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] [name]Jack[/name] (but I hate the nns [name]Robbie[/name], [name]Rob[/name], [name]Bobby[/name], [name]Bob[/name] etc, only like the full name, so not sure this will work too well).

We also love [name]Andrew[/name] and [name]Alexander[/name] but they are already family names.

Thanks!

William Jack definitely, and the possible nickname Liam is sweet.

Thomas has never been a favourite of mine and I really dislike the idea of a son being called Tom all the time. It’s very common and just bland IMO.

I dislike Robert and I think it would be very, very hard to avoid at least one of those nicknames.

Other ideas…
August Jack
Samson Jack
Arthur Jack
Lincoln Jack
Maxwell Jack
Linus Jack
Samuel Jack
Leo Jack
Everett Jack
Finlay Jack
Isaac Jack
Joshua Jack
Connor Jack
Henry Jack
Harrison Jack
Oliver Jack
Elliot Jack

I adore [name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name]! It’s so handsome and dashing sounding!

I like [name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name] nearly equally. [name]Both[/name] very handsome and timeless. [name]Robert[/name] is nice, though, and just as timeless and handsome. I know a little boy that is almost exclusively [name]Robert[/name]. I’ve heard him referred to a couple times as [name]Robbie[/name]–and that’s even by his close family–but outside his home he’s exclusively [name]Robert[/name]. So I think you could get away with that.

Good luck!

I love [name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name]! [name]Both[/name] nn’s of [name]Liam[/name] and [name]Will[/name] are great too. I also really like [name]Jack[/name] [name]William[/name] if that is an option.

I like [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name] best.

A vote for [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name].

I may be in the minority, but I love the name [name]Robert[/name] and I love that people are still considering it since it has been used quite a lot. Anyway all of the names are nice, handsome and solid boys names. With the middle name [name]Jack[/name] I would have to go with [name]William[/name] because to me that flows the best.

[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name] gets my vote. I don’t think [name]William[/name] with an “M” surname would flow very well.

[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name] is my fav, but [name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] flows a bit better.

Thanks! I love, love, love [name]Oliver[/name], that is currently my favourite boys name - but it is so popular in the UK at the moment & we live in [name]Scotland[/name], so I am wary of using it. [name]Oliver[/name] is the No1 name, and [name]Jack[/name] the no2 name here, so it would be a very popular name - although [name]Jack[/name] is for family reasons, so that doesn’t really matter.

[name]Luke[/name] is another long term love, but [name]Luke[/name] [name]Jack[/name] just sounds wrong, so that is off for this one sadly.

A couple of your suggestions jumped out to me, either as ones we had discussed and not considered fully, or as new ones:
[name]Henry[/name] [name]Jack[/name] ([name]Henry[/name] was my Dad’s Dad’s mn, but I never knew him as he died before I was born, that may be a nice idea)
[name]Joshua[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Issac[/name] [name]Jack[/name]
[name]Elliot[/name] [name]Jack[/name] - this one words for me for some reason, thanks, we hadn’t though of this.

You have given us a couple of lovely alternatives to explore, thank you! I am still very tempted to try for [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Jack[/name], but just worried about how popular it will be.

Thats a good point [name]Misha[/name], thanks. with [name]Thomas[/name], I imagine he will end up being called [name]Tom[/name], which raises the question of [name]Tom[/name] M again… Our surname starts with Mc, so the M sound isn’t very strong which makes me wonder if we can get away with it. I will need to test it out, thanks!

My vote goes for [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name]! This is nice combination.

[name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name]

I love the pp’s suggestion of Henry Jack! I also like William Jack, nn Will.

[name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] has a nice ring to it and I do like all the nn’s. I like [name]Tom[/name] too, it is a strong, manly name and I am really fond of [name]Robbie[/name] it is as terrific on a child as well as a man, but I am not fond of the ordinary nn of [name]Bob[/name].

rollo

[name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name] are great… might come down to whether you rather [name]Wil[/name]/[name]Bill[/name] or [name]Tom[/name]? I also like [name]Henry[/name], but I am still trying to make my mind up about [name]Henry[/name] [name]Jack[/name]. Was your partner’s relative a [name]John[/name] who used [name]Jack[/name] as a nn? If so, [name]Henry[/name] [name]John[/name] is good. Also [name]Oliver[/name] [name]John[/name] (and it pulls you away from using the top new names!)

AlexP, yes, Dh’s grandfather was John but known as Jack his entire life. I very much prefer the name John to Jack, Jack is just a name which doesn’t work for me but DH is adamant he would rather it was Jack than John. I have tried to persuade him to use John or a variation of John as we wanted a combination of my Grandfather’s name with his - mine is Hugh. But Hugh/Jack or John just doesn’t work. However, given how important using Jack is to DH, I am not going to push it & it has to stay as Jack as much as I would love to change it.

It also means he has left the final first name choice down to me if we can’t come to complete agreement from our narrowed down options.

I agree with you that Henry John is a much better option - Henry Jack is a bit heavy to get your tongue around. Oliver Jack I like, it is just how popular it is which puts me off.

I do sometimes wonder if it is better to go with what you love and not worry about popularity - but as a teacher, I know the bane of 3 or 4 children with the same first name in a class and that does scare me!

As for nns - as long as it is Tom or Will rather than Bill, I like both equally. Both have family links for us as well so we haven’t been able to narrow it down that way either.

We may have to flip a coin at this rate I think

Interesting that so many replies like William or Thomas, but Robert isn’t particularly popular. Its a very heavy name combined with our surname, so may not be the best option. Hmm!

[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Jack[/name]! I also really like [name]Robert[/name], but I suggest avoiding it if you strongly dislike all of the nicknames. I think [name]Bobby[/name] & [name]Bob[/name] are kind of charming for a little boy today.

[name]William[/name] [name]Jack[/name] could easily become BJ.
