Winnie

[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] has always been a favourite of mine, I fell in love it’s light and bubbly sound and the way it reminds me of sticky honeycomb, cheerful grins, and picnics held in warm summer evenings.
But lately I’ve just been wondering if it could stand on its own. Is it too youthful, too sweet?

This is what has led me to consider [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. It’s clunkier sound is what originally turned me off it years ago, but now I feel as if I’m looking at it with fresh eyes… And I’m really liking it!
Not only does it incorporate my darling [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but it actually doubles as an honour name for my grandfather [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] ‘[name_m]Fred[/name_m]’, which I think would be really special.
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] has a very different feel than [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] feels solemn and thoughtful, like old cathedrals with stained glass windows, dusty books filled with knowledge, and the melancholy song of a bird.
While I’m in love with [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], I’m just not sure I’m in love with [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] quite yet.

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could stand well on its own, or should I stick with [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and use [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nickname, just so that she could have a more ‘mature’ full name that she could grow into?

Winnie definitely works on it’s own!! Maybe it’s just because i’m in the UK but I know a couple of just [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]’s. [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is sweet but quite heavy and understandably not everyone’s favourite.

how about [name_f]Winona[/name_f]?

I personally love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] but I’m not sure it’s for you - I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] can stand perfectly well on its own, and hearing you talk about it makes it feel just right.

Ok, this is going to be a very unpopular opinion because I know everyone on Nameberry absolutely raves about this name but I’m not a fan… For me, it sounds like something a little girl would call her private parts and I just can’t get past that… Sorry. However, it doesn’t matter if I like it or not, you do and that’s all that matters! I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] can stand on its own for sure, I don’t think you need to go with [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] if you don’t love it. Although Wonifred definitely has a certain charm about it! And you’re in good company because I’ve lost count of the amount of people on here saying this is their favourite name so she certainly won’t be the only [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] around! I’m definitely in the minority on this one!

I adore [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] can stand on its own as well! [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is a bit more versatile than [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but I agree it does have a different feel to it and if you love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but not [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] I say stick with just [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]! [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could definitely stand on its own imho, but my “view” of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is more twirly linen dresses, knee socks, long grass, homemade kites, and flower crowns (if that knowledge helps you love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] more). Nickname names are becoming more popular so having a [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] who is “just” [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] won’t be odd and she’ll probably be fine among the Edies, Sophies, Lulus, etc.

I second [name_f]Winona[/name_f], I think it has the best full name for [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (I don’t like [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f]), I also think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would work on its own

I love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] for you with the nod to your grandfather. I also like that it allows for a tomboyish nickname if your daughter feels that’s a better fit. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is adorable, but I personally don’t like nicknames to stand on their own.

I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I love nicknamey names but have been considering [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] with [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] for short :black_heart:

I’m so excited to see someone else consider [name_u]Winslow[/name_u]! [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] was my top name for years but my husband wouldn’t agree to it. We ended up compromising and using another full name for [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

I absolutely love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (it’s the name we call my daughter) and think it can totally be a stand alone name. However personally I’m not a fan of nicknames as full names and I think [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] is charming and love that it would honor your grandfather as well as let you have [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]! The more positive associations the better I say.

What is your daughters full name?

We ended up using [name_f]Winrey[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] since my husband loved it and I got [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] (though I think I threw every name that could possibly be shortened to [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] at him before we agreed on one) At first I was pretty disappointed to give up [name_u]Winslow[/name_u], but now the name suits her perfectly.

Winnie seems to be the one for you! Perhaps if you want a longer name [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] could work but [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] definitely works as a stand alone name.

I had a baby sitter named [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] when I was a child. I think she was in her 50s? Anyway [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never considered it a juvenile sounding name. Probably [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] isnt a great full legal name, it sounds very informal to me.

Your description of what it reminds you of sounds lovely, and your wish to use it to honor your family member. That’s great. I’m sorry to say that I really, really, don’t like it. It’s more for personal reasons since I had a family member with that name that I absolutely hated and therefore would never use it myself. Also, that aside, “winnie” is the sound that a horse makes, and it’s awfully close to the word “whiny” for me, too. I caution using a nickname as a name rather than a full name, especially for a kid that eventually grows up and can need to fit into the professional world - think perhaps the difference a [name_f]Jenny[/name_f] might encounter in the boardroom versus a [name_f]Jennifer[/name_f].

Winnie does work on its own, but honestly, I really prefer it as a nickname. I’m just thinking for myself, if I went by [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], I’d want a more extended name to use in the professional world. Not because [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] isn’t professional- any name can be professional, but because of the unfortunate prejudices society and the workforce has against certain things, names sadly being one of them. I like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but I also love the other suggestions people have given of [name_f]Winona[/name_f] and [name_u]Winslow[/name_u].

I adore [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. [name_f]Every[/name_f] time I meet a [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], it just makes me smile. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] can absolutely stand on its own. Especially when paired with a mature, grounded middle name (I.e. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f]). Yet, the fact that [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] honors your grandfather is very special. If it was my personal choice, I’d choose to honor my family member, and then call her primarily by her nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

I absolutely love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]! I think it works as a stand alone name, most of the longer versions appear very clunky to me. As a labor and delivery nurse, I can confirm a lot of munchkins are getting nicknames as full names. But I also think that there’s nothing wrong with naming her [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and only going by a nickname, people always gravitate towards what’s easier to say!

I love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] all on its own, what a beautiful, classic, wholesome, and cute name all in one package!! I hope you keep [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] on your list, its adorable and doesn’t need to be lengthened at all. I know you’d like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] for the name connection, but I really love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] all on its own, it has all the personality and cuteness it needs.
