Winslet?

Thoughts on [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]? I was originally considering it as a MN but lately I’ve been loving it as a FN with the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

[name_f]Winnie[/name_f] sounds pretty as a nn, but I think your other choices for first names are better

I commented on [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] in another one of your threads where you mentioned it (the [name_f]Adelia[/name_f] one, I think). I don’t think it’s unwearable as a first, but it is pretty tied to [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]. I feel like comments about the actress would be inevitable.

If that’s not a dealbreaker, I think it sounds elegant. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is a super cute nickname as well.

Agreed with previous poster that [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] is still very much associated with [name_f]Kate[/name_f] — I wouldn’t use it for that reason. Still, there are a growing number of little Annistons running around, so [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] could work too. I like the -t ending (like [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f]) and the nickname [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

Right, that was my original thought. [name_m]Beckham[/name_m], Aniston, [name_f]Jolie[/name_f], [name_u]Jagger[/name_u], [name_u]Presley[/name_u], and [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] are all common place now.

It just makes me think of the actress.

I don’t really think of the actress. I like the imagery that I get from [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]! I think of a pretty, seaside inlet on a warm, breezy day, early spring sailing trips…very crisp and pleasant, imo. I prefer nn [name_u]Win[/name_u]/[name_u]Winn[/name_u] for it, but [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is cute (:

I know surnames are in right now, but this one is too much surname for me. I could get used to it if I heard it on a girl and it doesn’t sound bad, but I personally would not choose it. I like [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], though.

I love the name [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] - it’s really fresh, whimsical and bohemian. It’s on my GP list though unfortunately because I think it’s just too tied to the actress.

It’s not a bad association or anything, but it is a very strong and singular one and therefore I think it’s to be avoided if you don’t want people to assume celebrity inspiration, sadly :frowning:

Thanks everyone. For what it’s worth, I’m in the US, so I don’t know if that makes a difference… I know a few people my age who are not overly familiar with the actress and only made the connection when I said “[name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f], the actress from Titanic.” and then they said “OH Yeah!” So [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] didn’t instinctively remind them of her.

I’m in the US and have never seen Titanic, but immediately thought of [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] when I saw this. I agree with @chelsanne22, too much of a surname for my liking. I’m not fond of names like Aniston, [name_m]Beckham[/name_m], [name_f]Jolie[/name_f], etc., either.

I think of [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] also. I don’t understand the fascination with celebrity surnames.

I actually think it sounds pretty and classy. One of the better surname names [name_f]IMO[/name_f].

I like the nn [name_f]Letty[/name_f]/[name_f]Lettie[/name_f] for [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] makes me think of [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh. Not that that is a bad thing, of course

I’m completely with you on this. Personally, citing the current popular use of [name_f]Anniston[/name_f]/[name_f]Annistyn[/name_f]/Annisten/Annysten/et al, [name_m]Beckham[/name_m], [name_f]Jolie[/name_f], etc just reinforces what a bad idea it is.

I don’t have a “fascination” with celebrity names(???) It’s a legitimate name whether it belongs to a celebrity or not.

I think it’s adorable and I love the nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but I prefer [name_u]Winslow[/name_u].

I find it pretty. I think [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] is a lovely association. I like unique. It doesn’t flow super easily off my tongue when I say it out loud, but I love flowy names.

Actually, that’s a good point. I hadn’t thought about all those other common celebrity surname names. In that case, it makes [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] seem even more wearable. (I had already thought it wearable.)

I personally [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f]. It has such a charming, whimsical vibe. I have always thought it was too tied to [name_f]Kate[/name_f], but, like I said, now that you bring up [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u], [name_u]Presley[/name_u], [name_f]Anniston[/name_f], etc…
I definitely think it would make a lovely addition to your list:)

[name_f]Winslet[/name_f] is okay. I’m not overly into celebrity surnames, but [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] certainly isn’t terrible. You would probably be asked quite a bit if [name_f]Kate[/name_f] [name_f]Winslet[/name_f] was your favorite actress though. When I read the title, I instantly thought of the actress. [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] is nice.
