Winslow... Boy or Girl?

I am writing a novel. Here is a bit of background to go with the naming scenario. The story revolves around 19-year-old [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] Birge. She has an older brother named [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] and a younger sister named [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. The parents of these three, [name_m]Miles[/name_m] Birge and [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] [name_m]Cavanaugh[/name_m] got divorced. [name_f]Larissa[/name_f], a freelance artist who lives in a tiny apartment with her new husband [name_m]Nate[/name_m], is expecting a baby. I wanted the baby to be named after a famous artist and thus chose [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] after [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] [name_m]Homer[/name_m]. I am having mixed emotions about whether the baby should be a boy or a girl. What is your opinion?

I think [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] should be a girl, nn [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] is a boys name for me. [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] could still be a cute nickname for when he’s a baby.

I think “[name_u]Winslow[/name_u]” is more of a boy’s name but the cute “[name_u]Win[/name_u]” and “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]” nicknames does make it more girlish but in the end, I still think its more of a boy’s name

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] is masculine to me, and [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] would be cute pet names.

Maybe [name_f]Larissa[/name_f] is sure the baby’s going to be a boy and names him [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] while he’s still in the womb, but the baby turns out to be a girl and she decides to go with it anyway? In that case, I would use [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nickname for her.

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] could go either way I think. Is there a specific reason for [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] [name_m]Homer[/name_m]? There are other artists, I just did a paper on [name_m]Mark[/name_m] Rothko, Rothko could be a cool boys name because it doesn’t sound like you made up your mind if they baby will be a boy or girl. I knew a girl named [name_f]Monet[/name_f]. What about [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], Khalo, [name_m]Diego[/name_m], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], Miro, [name_m]Piet[/name_m], [name_u]Caro[/name_u], [name_f]Sisley[/name_f], [name_u]Morisot[/name_u], [name_u]Matisse[/name_u], [name_f]Kathe[/name_f], Dali, [name_f]Magritte[/name_f], [name_m]Ernst[/name_m], or [name_f]Meret[/name_f]? So many possibilities.

I second the [name_f]Monet[/name_f] suggestion for a girl. To me [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] seems like a girls name because of the nickname, [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. I hate boys names on girls(I’m a girl named [name_u]Jayden[/name_u] and I’ve always hated having a boys name), but I could see the appeal of a girl called [name_u]Winslow[/name_u]. If its a girl, I think [name_f]Monet/name_f, [name_f]Georgia/name_f, or [name_f]Beatrix/name_f would be better options though.

I like [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] for a girl, besides [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] is just as unisex. The only name that throws off your sibset is [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. But [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] and [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] won’t have the same dad, so I like it. Maybe it was mom’s idea to have a unisex name and simply wouldn’t let the name [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] go so then her dad settled, wanting a more soft and feminine name but maybe using it in the middle spot. Then, with [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], the 2nd girl, dad got more of a say and she has more of a unisex middle name ([name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Quinn[/name_u], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]…) and now with this new guy mom has full reign again, so unisex it is!

Did I completely over-think that or what!

Coming up with character names is one of my favorite things to do. Right now I’m writing a book, novel, whatever, and my main character is [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] (last name TBA). Too fun! I always get to use the names my boyfriend rules out completely…i.e. [name_u]Indiana[/name_u] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].

Good luck!

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] is all boy. [name_f]Frida[/name_f] ([name_f]Kahlo[/name_f]) could work for a quirky girl name.

Good point about the sibset, imho. But, what if [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] was named after the writer [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] Waugh who was male? That would mean [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] could also be a girl?! I do like [name_u]Winslow[/name_u] on a girl, especially with nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f].

[name_u]Winslow[/name_u] is definitely a boys’ name. Go with [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] for a girl.
