Women in Piracy

I sort of have a fascination with the name [name]Grainne[/name], not because of her sound or her meaning, or the Irish [name]Legend[/name] (even though thats awesome as well) but because of the association with the pirate queen.

This has got me wondering, so I decided to do a google search and see if there are anymore female pirates with interesting names…

Here are a few I found:

Teuta
Rusila
Stikla
[name]Sela[/name]
Alvid
Wigbiorg
Hetha
Wisna
Alfhild
Ladgerda
[name]Jeanne[/name]-[name]Louise[/name]
[name]Grainne[/name]
[name]Veronica[/name]
Sayyida
Elizabetha
Jacquotte
[name]Ingela[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Sadie[/name]
Ching
Sida

Thoughts?

I feel like you’d have to have a really big family to start getting to some of these names… Also, I’m all for pirates in the old-fashioned sense, but they’ve been doing lots of killing lately off the horn of [name]Africa[/name] that has really tarnished the whole charming eyepatch and stripes image. Anyway, I like Teuta (pirate queen of Illyria? Illyria makes a nice name too, while we’re at it.) Also [name]Jeanne[/name]-[name]Louise[/name] (what a cool feminization) and [name]Sadie[/name] of course. [name]Grainne[/name] is beautiful spoken (“Grahnia”) though I don’t love it written. But whatever um… floats your boat. Arg!

[name]Ingela[/name] is beautiful!!
