Wondering about matchiness

See the results of this poll: We have a Sofia, would you use another name ending in ia for her little sister?

Respondents: 34 (This poll is closed)

  • Would automatically eliminate any names ending in ia : 3 (9%)
  • Would use only if really loved the name : 10 (29%)
  • No problem, would use if I liked the name: 21 (62%)

My sister and I (best friends, and name nerds) disagree on this.

She thinks very different sounding names with different initials but the same endings sounds unified and cohesive. For a long time every girls name on her list ended in -a. Well, not [name]EVERY[/name] name, but every first name. Different sounding middles.

I like names to have all different endings. Keeps it from sounding repetitive I think. But to my sister it sounds disjointed and not flow-y.

So go with names you truly love and sound good to you. I definitely think some -ia names can sound good and not too predictable together.

I believe it could work.

I have two sibling family members that end in -ria. Victo-ria and Alexand-ria. V goes by her full first name (she was taught to always correct those who would try to give her a nn such as [name]Tory[/name] or [name]Vicky[/name]) and A goes simply by [name]Alex[/name]. Not suggesting to give a nn, but it could work. Although I know yours are not twins, I have known some by the name of [name]Brandy[/name] & [name]Randy[/name], [name]Candy[/name] & [name]Mandy[/name], [name]Perry[/name] & [name]Terry[/name], Keasha & Kiasha (I thought this was pretty sad). I think a couple of similar letters should be alright.

They are even some parents that like to begin their children names with the same letters, so why not end with them if you love the names.

Personally, I don’t like it but it really depends on the name. [name]Sofia[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name] sound ok to me but [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name] sound too matchy (the two names not only share an ending but a prominent “ee” sound too). As long as the beginning and middle sound of each name sound “different” , I think you could use them. I don’t mind all girls names ending in an “a” but I like to have a little variety.

Example:

[name]Sofia[/name], [name]Arabella[/name], [name]Violetta[/name] and [name]Juliana[/name] - ia, ella, etta and ana

If you say the names out loud they don’t quite sound the same because the emphasis is different

It’s not so-[name]FEE[/name]-ah and ju-[name]LEE[/name]-ah, it’s so-[name]FEE[/name]-ah and JU-lia (and ah-ME-lia and o-[name]LIV[/name]-ia) so they don’t sound matchy

to add another wrinkle, we don’t know if we will have another child but consider having 3, and obviously don’t know if it would be a girl, but if it was, would that put us in a strange situation, i.e. if we had 2 girls ending in ia, we would either have to use another is which would be way too matchy or do something else and then the 3rd girl might feel left out?

The third daughter is much less likely to feel left out if her name at least ended in A like her sisters. Then the three names would have the same (very) ending in common. A sibset of [name]Sofia[/name], [name]Julia[/name], and [name]Clara[/name] sounds like cohesive set to me; whereas, [name]Sofia[/name], [name]Julia[/name], and [name]Claire[/name] would not.

I agree, I would totally use it! I don’t think something like [name]Isabelle[/name] and [name]Annabelle[/name] really work together, but something like [name]Sofia[/name] and [name]Julia[/name], [name]Sofia[/name] and [name]Maria[/name], or [name]Sofia[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name]? I think it’s fine. I would honestly use both [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Charlotte[/name] together, and those are more matchy than [name]Sofia[/name] and [name]Olivia[/name], imo.

Good luck!

ashthedreamer, what about [name]Sofia[/name] & [name]Amelia[/name]? also since 2 potential nicknames for amelia ([name]Lia[/name] and [name]Mia[/name]) would really rhyme - we don’t want nicknames but it scares me that she could end up with a rhyming nickname - is that enough to not use it?)

all: having 3 sibs ending in “a” (2 of them with ia) gets way too matchy, no?? again, don’t know if we will have a 3rd and then whether we would have a girl but don’t want to get “stuck” in a pattern

I think it’s fine and can work well. I have friends who named their children with this sort of theme-- [name]Nadia[/name], [name]Ana[/name] (nn for [name]Anastasia[/name]), [name]Jeremiah[/name] (usually [name]Jer[/name]), and [name]Sophia[/name].
