Words as names: yes or no?

I was watching a tv show one day years ago…one of the men was talking about an ancestor that was named “Consider” but they called him “[name_m]Sid[/name_m]” and I have no clue why I fell in love with the idea but it really stuck with me. I was just wondering everyone’s opinions on “word names” and if you have heard of or like any others!

I’m a fan of word names. I believe the puritans were also very big fans of word names and used them quite often. [name_m]Increase[/name_m] Mather and his son [name_m]Cotton[/name_m] are just some examples.

I like some word names, but some I find a little bizarre. Nature word names are usually almost all okay by me. [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_f]Snow[/name_f] are two of my favorites. I also enjoy a lot of the virture word names ie [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Honor[/name_f], etc. Some of the more unusual ones I’ve heard and liked are [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] and [name_f]Answer[/name_f]. Would I ever name my child [name_f]Answer[/name_f]? No. But I thought it was pretty darn cool anyway. lol

Word names are a really broad category. I like some but others seem strange or corny to me. For boys I like [name_m]Jasper[/name_m], [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] and [name_m]Griffin[/name_m] (though I believe none of them started out as English word names). For girls I like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (plus a lot of other flower/plant names). Consider seems odd to me since it’s such a common word but the nickname [name_m]Sid[/name_m] does make it more wearable.

I’m not a fan of the likes of [name_f]Chastity[/name_f] or overly cutesy names like [name_m]Buddy[/name_m], [name_f]Princess[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f] etc.

I agree with everyone above, I like them a lot of the time but not ALL the time. I especially like most nature names and a lot of virtue names. I think the word just can’t be too commonly used.

I think it depends on the word but I really like word names.

I feel like most names started out as words (how would they have meanings otherwise?). So I’d say go for it! Someone had to use the name “rock” for the first time, only it came out as [name_m]Peter[/name_m] in that language.

The two most blatant word names I’ve come across are Dreamer and [name_m]Bishop[/name_m]. For some reason, I really liked Dreamer. I’d never name my kid that, but the girl seemed to wear it well.
