Would Evander work?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] again Berries,

I recently started a thread about our two day old son who has no name. Thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions! I wish I could say that we have a name now but, embarrassingly, at 12 days old, he still hasn’t been named :frowning:

Everything I’ve been pushing for, my husband just doesn’t like. I’ve wanted to go for names including:

  • [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Leopold[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Lucien[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Lysander[/name_m]/[name_m]Leander[/name_m]

My husband really liked [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] but it’s just too popular for me. I thought maybe [name_m]Evander[/name_m] might be a good middle ground? But now that he’s on board I’m not so sure it will work with siblings A D E L A I D E and E D M U N D.

Is [name_m]Evander[/name_m] just too different in style to our current son’s and daughter’s names? I really liked the idea of using another traditional but underused name, as I believe
A D E L A I D E and E D M U N D to be. These names bring about connotations of nobility and royalty for me. I’m just not sure [name_m]Evander[/name_m] has those same associations?

This all seems very trivial, I know, but I really want to be comfortable with this name choice, given that it’s our last shot at it; this is our very last child. I don’t want to have any regrets or doubts.

What do you think about [name_m]Evander[/name_m] with our sibset? Is there another name you see being a better fit?

Thank you!!

I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is lovely! Here’s the thing about it: it feels classic, even though it’s not really. That’s why I think it works well with his siblings’ names! All three sound classic, are familiar ([name_m]Evander[/name_m] because of [name_u]Evan[/name_u] and [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], even if it itself isn’t common) and unique but not weird.
If your husband likes [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], what about [name_m]Tolliver[/name_m]? Or another O name? [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], Oleander, [name_m]Osmond[/name_m], [name_m]Oswin[/name_m]? Maybe a name ending in -er? [name_m]Chester[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_u]Dexter[/name_u], [name_m]Fraser[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m]?
Other classic and not too common choices:
[name_u]August[/name_u]/[name_m]Augustus[/name_m]/[name_m]Augustine[/name_m]
[name_m]Amos[/name_m]
[name_m]Benedict[/name_m]
[name_m]Clyde[/name_m]
[name_m]Clark[/name_m]
[name_m]Cyrus[/name_m]
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m]
[name_m]Clement[/name_m]
[name_m]Cecil[/name_m]
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_m]Damian[/name_m]/[name_m]Damien[/name_m]
[name_m]Etienne[/name_m]
[name_m]Emilian[/name_m]
[name_u]Francis[/name_u]
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m]
[name_m]Garrett[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_m]Harold[/name_m]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]
[name_u]Ira[/name_u]
[name_m]Kenneth[/name_m]
[name_m]Linus[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]
[name_u]Lionel[/name_u]
[name_m]Leon[/name_m]
[name_m]Laurent[/name_m]
[name_m]Montgomery[/name_m]
[name_m]Maximilian[/name_m]
[name_u]Maxime[/name_u]
[name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m]
[name_m]Philip[/name_m]
[name_u]Percy[/name_u]/[name_m]Percival[/name_m]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]
[name_m]Roland[/name_m]
[name_m]Seamus[/name_m]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]
[name_m]Tobias[/name_m]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_m]Wilbur[/name_m]

I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] sounds great with your other children. While yes, it’s not as familiar as the other two names, it’s not a modern invention either, according to Nameberry it’s been used in Greek and [name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology.

Thank you for approving my post

I’m having a really hard time trying to decide on a name for our son so I really appreciate having the opportunity to share my naming concerns with fellow Berries x

@emmievis,

Thank you for your amazing suggestions!

I really like the idea of choosing another ‘O’ name to substitute for [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. I like [name_m]Osmond[/name_m] but worry it’s too similar in sound to [name_m]Edmund[/name_m].

The list of names you’ve recommended is wonderful

I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is great name, but I do understand your concerns. I think it works quite well if you love it.

I did think of [name_m]Leander[/name_m] for you.

And also [name_u]Owen[/name_u] as a substitute for [name_m]Oliver[/name_m]. My son’s name is [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and I love all the history tied to it. I’m not sure if you consider it to be too common, but it’s pretty rare in our circles.
