Would Gwendolen always be "Gwendolyn with an e"?

I prefer the [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] spelling, but it’s never been in the top 1000 in the U.S, whereas the [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] spelling has charted somewhere in the top 1000 for almost as long as the rankings have been kept. What does everyone think?

I pronounce both names a bit different so if you go for the lyn pronunciation, yes I think she would be. I feel like there are some names where people ask for the spelling (ex. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] or [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]) but I think that little [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]'s name would always be misspelled. Sorry

I’m thinking so. I just named my little one [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] on the 21st and most things are being addressed to her as [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwendolin[/name_f]. Hopefully family will catch on soon, but I knew going in it would be an issue. I just didn’t like [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] near as much, especially knowing that [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is the original spelling. It also looks “cleaner” in my opinion.

I much prefer [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] to [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] looks trendy to me.

It’s likely that you would get the Y spelling a lot since people are more familiar with it. However, I’m constantly impressed at general inability to spell names. My husband is [name_m]Aaron[/name_m] and he’s always getting [name_m]Aron[/name_m], Araan, [name_f]Erin[/name_f], you name it. [name_m]Even[/name_m] names you think would be “safe” aren’t necessarily safe. Y for E might not be that bad in the scope of things.

I didn’t know there was a spelling with an E. You probably will have to correct people a lot. I pronounce them the same.

I’d expect a lot of people to need to ask how to spell it no matter which way you spelt it. And some people NEVER ask and will do all kinds of insane things like “[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]” or whatever.

[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is not such a common name I’d expect even the most popular form to be spelling-proof.

I’m actually surprised at how much more popular the [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] spelling is, I would assume it’s spelt [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], which I prefer. At the end of the day I don’t think there is a name out there that you would never have to correct the spelling.

Seeing as it’s the original spelling, I would normally suggest you use it but since [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] has basically overshadowed the original, I’d prefer you use [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] to minimize confusion.

I prefer [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], but if you’re going to pronounce it gwen-doh-lin, spell it [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. If gwen-doh-len, choose [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]. I agree with saracita00, people spell names however they want sometimes, especially with the current generation of “I spelled it this way because it’s unique.” I once saw an Alyzibeth. Or was it Alyzabith?
