Would it be acceptable to use...

Here’s my dilemna:

OH and I both love the name [name_m]Michael[/name_m] for a future son. [name_m]Michael[/name_m] is his grandfather’s name as well as his and his father’s middle name. It is also my dad’s name, so strong family connections. However, a few years ago my parents separated and I’m worried that my mum would be upset if we used [name_m]Michael[/name_m] as it would remind her of my dad. We would use [name_u]Mickey[/name_u] as a nickname, not [name_m]Mike[/name_m] as that’s what people used to call my dad. What do you berries think? Would it be acceptable to use this name?

What is your maternal grandfather’s first and middle name if you don’t mind me asking? If one of them goes with [name_m]Michael[/name_m] it would be a good combination. Have you thought of [name_m]Michael[/name_m] as a middle name? With mickey still being the nickname?

My mum’s father is [name_m]John[/name_m] (nn [name_m]Jack[/name_m]) [name_m]George[/name_m]. We’re considering using [name_m]Michael[/name_m] as a middle name but would prefer to use it as a first if possible.

Um, yes? Unless your dad did something horrid to her, she doesn’t really have the right to get upset over you naming your son after your father (as well as your OH’s grandfather and father). Does she expect you to pretend your father doesn’t exist just because they’re separated…? I don’t understand.

I honestly don’t think your mom would be angry if you wanted to name your son after your dad. She knows you love him and you obviously still have a good relationship with him if you want to honor him. Plus, like you said, there is more than one family member you are honoring. I say if you really love the name, go for it!

Completely this, especially as you are not using the name solely to honour your father, but also your husband’s side of the family. Good luck!
