Would it be so bad to name a girl [name]Katniss[/name]? I know that the immediate connection would be Hunger Games (regardless that it is an actual plant). Is that cruel to do to a baby girl with the popularity of the Hunger Games? Or do you think that it will eventually become a ‘common’ place name? I ask because I have strongly been considering the name. I just don’t seem to really be falling for any other names for my baby (due in [name]July[/name]).
I don’t know that cruel is exactly the right word - she’s a good character overall, so that’s good. But the name itself just lends itself to some teasing, by its sounds, and I also feel this might be in the category of “names that are a lot to live up to”, since the character is such a heroic one (as I understand it). I’d advise against this really.
Also no sibling name could compare well, hardly. Maybe [name]Hermione[/name] : D.
I think it’d be a cool middle name. I also think [name]Katherine[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] nickname [name]Katniss[/name] would be a logical and cool, old-school Greek name.
Good luck!
It would necessarily be cruel but VERY trendy! I see all baby Katnisses being born in a 5 year span at most so it will probably be a very dated name in the future. She will almost certainly never be able to hide her age.
Not cruel. Obvious, predictable, over-the-top, and trendy might come to mind for many. Others would be overjoyed to see the name of a character and series they adore used [name]IRL[/name]. [name]Just[/name] depends on the perception you feel comfortable with. The name separate from the series has an intriguing sound helped by its similarity to long favored [name]Katherine[/name] and its cousins.
Part of me thinks it would be a good name but that automatic ‘oh, from Hunger Games’ or ‘a Hunger Games fan’ would get old. And if I would still like it years from now when the fad is gone. Plus, I have heard a lot of people say it sounds like cat piss.
I don’t think it would be cruel, exactly, but with the Hunger Games being so popular right now, i think it would be seen as an homage to the lead character of the book & movie. You and your daughter might get a lot of “oh from the hunger games?” type comments if the series stays as popular as it is now (which seems likely).
If you don’t mind that association, you should definitely use it because it sure is cute
as few more suggestions, a little bit like [name]Katniss[/name]:
[name]Issa[/name]
[name]Odessa[/name]
[name]Katine[/name]
[name]Ambrosia[/name]
[name]Isis[/name]
[name]Carissa[/name]
[name]Corissande[/name]
[name]Katalina[/name]
[name]Wallis[/name]
[name]Arliss[/name]
[name]Sabine[/name]
good luck to you!
I know when I say this I’m going to give away that I live under a rock (who is 15 months old and named [name]Jack[/name]) but having never read The Hunger Games and not yet seen the movie I see [name]Katniss[/name] and get “cat nip”. I’m sure that most of the American public would think Hunger Games now, but in 15 years it might be back to cat nip. [name]Just[/name] a thought from the off trend.
It could be cruel to name someone something that makes people immediately think of cat piss… Then catness… cattiness. There is just so much wrong with this name and on top of it all anyone who knows the huger games would also ask if you named her after a character. I don’t know anything positive other than the nn [name]Cat[/name], and there are plenty of other great suggestions.
“You must really like the Hunger Games.”
You’ll need to get used to hearing this because I think you’d be hearing it a lot.
Not cruel in my opinion! I myself have [name]Katniss[/name] on my girls list (and keep coming back to it). The reason I love it is because I love the character and personality of [name]Katniss[/name], what she represents and well…I just love the books! And that’s the great thing about [name]Katniss[/name]…But you certainly will see at least a couple little Katnisses running around in upcoming years so if you think that would bother you than I would advise maybe looking for a different name. But if you think you could handle it- GO FOR IT!! [name]Just[/name] do what your heart tells you
Although I really like the Hunger Games, I would never ever name my daughter [name]Katniss[/name]. I don’t think it sounds pretty. It sounds really harsh and it’s too much HG. Everyone will associate her name to the Hunger Games.
Although I really like the Hunger Games, I would never ever name my daughter [name]Katniss[/name]. I don’t think it sounds pretty. It sounds really harsh and it’s too much HG. Everyone will associate her name to the Hunger Games. Also, I can’t imagine a little girl or a woman named [name]Katniss[/name]. It doesn’t seem like a real name to me. Overall, YES, I think it’s cruel, but if you really want to name your daughter [name]Katniss[/name], it’s your daughter and your decision.
I wouldn’t say cruel. I myself have no intentions of reading or watching Hunger Games so I would never associate the name with any character. It is pretty once you get past the immediate thought of cat nip.
A very very very “fad” type name and not attractive at all imo. To echo others, catnip/cat ____. I’ve read the books and if I heard of a baby named [name]Katniss[/name], I’d probably roll my eyes… it seems very over the top and trendy since the series is so popular right now. When the HG craze dies down in a couple of years, a child and eventually an adult named [name]Katniss[/name] will just get odd looks imo.
I agree with this, except I don’t understand what Hunger Games is. I don’t know if it just hasn’t caught on in Europe, or if the people I know are talking about it and using the Basque name or what, but I don’t understand what’s happening at all.
Definitely a fad name, I would definitely roll my eyes because I do know what it’s from (even though I don’t know what it is), and I think growing up with a name that most people are not going to recognize and will automatically say, “Your name is [name]Cat[/name] Nip? Your name is [name]Cat[/name] WHAT?!” would be awful. I don’t know about cruel because I can indeed think of worse names, but this one is not one I’d thank my parents for bestowing on me, that’s for sure.
[name]Katniss[/name] is a wonderful name, I adore it myself. And it certainly wouldn’t be cruel to name your daughter [name]Katniss[/name]. The obssesstions of the Hunger Games and the connotation of the name [name]Katniss[/name] will probably have died down by the time she is four at the most, so I don’t think it will affect her in anyway like that, but with the popularity of the name going up, you can probably expect her not to be the only girl with the name [name]Katniss[/name].
I don’t think it’s cruel, just super trendy right now. In a few years, the popularity will die down and if you named a baby [name]Katniss[/name] then, it might not get as many eye rolls. However, I just hear cat piss and cat nip, and I’m sure a lot of other people do too.
I think anything can go in the middle, and I think it would make an interesting middle name, or a nickname to a more classic name like [name]Katherine[/name]. Then, if she wanted to go by a more traditional name later in life, she could.
Plus, I prefer the real name of the plant, Sagittaria, which won’t be associated with the Hunger Games.
Not cruel. I think it’s a very pretty name, and love the character. BUT it will sound extremely dated quickly because of the film/books, and expect to hear lots of comments about The Hunger Games.
My honest opinion is that even if the book/movie never existed, it is a HORRIBLE name in general. It just sounds very harsh to say and not something I could envision calling my little girl, but that is just my opinion obviously. I am not one to care about popularity necessarily, although I’m guessing that it will become quite popular now despite how unattractive it sounds to me at least.
I think [name]Katniss[/name] is a beautiful name! I’m not the biggest fan of the series(though I don’t dislike it)- I did watch the movie, but only because the ticket was free- and if it weren’t for the reference I would seriously consider it myself. That said, if you are a huge Hunger Games fan I think it would be fine for you to name your kid that, although I might wait out the faze. You may have groomed yourself to like the name simply because you liked the book and you could hate that decision in the future. Keep it in the back of your mind and when [name]July[/name] rolls around if you’ve been consistently living it, go for it! I wouldn’t tell anyone definitively that that’s the name yet, though.
