Would it be weird?

Lately I’ve been crushing on Khadidja. Would it be weird to name a child that if you’re not muslim?

Kind of weird, yes.

I think it would be odd, yes, as [name_f]Khadija[/name_f] is such a significant figure in the religion as the first convert, and wife of the [name_m]Prophet[/name_m] [name_m]Muhammad[/name_m].

Yep. It would definitely be weird.

Yes, I agree it might be odd. I just think she holds a lot of significance to Muslims that it wouldn’t sit quite right for a child who wasn’t.

Sorry, I agree with other posters! Seems like a name that’s off limits if you aren’t Muslim.

I’d expect a [name_f]Khadija[/name_f] to come from a Muslim family and would be very surprised if she isn’t. And it has religious significance (first muslim ever). [name_m]Don[/name_m]’t think it works

I’d normally agree with these sentiments expressed by the other posters but I’ve grown up with so many non-Muslim Khadijahs. It still is a very popular choice.
That being said, it would depend on how receptive the community that you live in would be to you using a name of Islamic origin.

Yes. Like it would be weird to name your kid [name_u]Aoibheann[/name_u] if you have no Irish background.

Honestly I don’t know much about Islam and would have no idea there was a link unless you told me. However I do think that the name should be within your kids cultural experience/identity just so they don’t feel like their name doesn’t fit them. Maybe you have family or friends that are muslim? But to answer the question, I don’t think not being muslim would automatically make it weird. But it would be weird if everyone else your kid knows has a name like [name_f]Mary[/name_f] or [name_m]Robert[/name_m].

Beautiful name, but would be weird for non-Muslim.

  1. Yes.
Weird if you / baby are not Muslim or not Saudi/Gulfi. [name_f]Khadija[/name_f] being the first Muslim, the first to believe [name_m]Muhammad[/name_m]’s account, and then helping propogate the religion… It’d be something akin to an Atheist naming their kid [name_m]Prophet[/name_m].

  2. Generally, if you have to ask… You already know the answer is yes

Not if it’s cultural appreciation

[name_f]Khadija[/name_f] was one of the most important women in the Muslim faith so I think it would be strange to use it if you’re not Muslim (unless you’re agnostic/atheist but come from a Muslim family, I suppose). Many English speakers cannot pronounce this name properly so I personally would not use it unless I came from a Muslim religious background.

Seconding previous posters.
