Thanks so much for all of your replies, Berries! I’m impressed by how many people actually had professional knowledge of the wine, and I’m just sitting here like “uh…wine is from grapes, right?”
Multiquote hasn’t been working for me (does anyone have any idea why?) so I can’t tag you guys while replying. Please bear with me!
Norbury: Five million points to you for that reference
But dear god, I hope it wouldn’t be that bad! I mean, worst case scenario, I hope that thinking I named her after a wine wouldn’t be as bad as naming someone after a mushroom (though they are delicious). Thankfully, [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] has its own name “history” that is completely unrelated to wine, so hopefully people would be less inclined to think so. I mean, I’ve heard of a pretty famous author named [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] McFadden - maybe that’s a step towards the general public’s familiarity with it as a name. We will see
liviajoan - great points! Funny enough, I actually really liked [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] with the Leer-uh pronunciation, but of course would steer clear of that because 1. I can’t have [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and 2) [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] has the cute nn option of [name_m]Cy[/name_m], whereas [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]…not so much. It would either be “leer” or “lie”, which is less than desirable as a nn. In terms of middles, for years I have adored [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] [name_f]Niamh[/name_f], but possibly over-thinking it has made me concerned that it would sound like “Siren [name_f]Eve[/name_f]” when yelling it across a playground. I also considered [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], because [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] is my sister’s name and she is just a wonderful human being and I would love to have a daughter like her. But [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] might work better for that middle, because [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] is so out-there and [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f] is much more toned down. Wow, I need to end this long response. [name_m]Long[/name_m] story short: I am still open-minded for a middle for [name_f]Cyra[/name_f]. (Oh, and I [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] the names in your sig! Wonderful! A lot of those are on my list.)
aveline_bellefleur: yes! I thought about writing “sigh-rah”, but I did that on a previous post and a couple first impressions from people was that it would sound like the beginning of “cigarette” (which I get, because the pronunciation description is supposed to be phonetic). So, I tried describing it another way, lol.
dantea - Okay, your daughter’s name is gorgeous. Holy moly! And yes, that is a distinct possibility of people pronouncing it as if it were [name_f]Kyra[/name_f]. But, spelling it Syra would bring it closer to the name of the wine, as well as make it a little too similar to [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] more likely. If you say [name_f]Cyra[/name_f], it kind of sounds like [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] with a Southern accent as it is. So, I will roll with it
