of [name]Odin[/name] (B) and [name]Velvet[/name] (G)? These were the names chosen by my coworkers daughter for her new baby. She didn’t find out the sex, so she brought these names to the hospital and went home with a beautiful healthy baby girl [name]Velvet[/name].
I dig [name]Odin[/name], and love the Norse theme, but I can’t seem to wrap my head around [name]Velvet[/name].
What do you think?
On a more exciting note, Hubs and I have just decided to start TTC! hooray!
I agree with you. I don’t mind [name]Odin[/name]… it sounds like a fresh twist on [name]Owen[/name]. As for [name]Velvet[/name]… I think it has a lot of teasing potential, unfortunately. I simply cannot imagine a job application with the name [name]Velvet[/name] on it… but that’s just my opinion.
The only other time I have seen [name]Velvet[/name] on a person was when I was young and watched the movie National [name]Velvet[/name] with a young [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Taylor[/name]. I loved the name at the time because she was pretty and I thought it was pretty, but now I see that it is a unusual choice. [name]Odin[/name] is okay for a boy. He can live with that name better than a girl named [name]Velvet[/name].
I don’t like [name]Odin[/name] much (reminds me of odor), but [name]Velvet[/name] is awful. It’s a pretty word, but used as a name, it sounds like a porn star.
I like [name]Velvet[/name] more than I like [name]Lacey[/name]/[name]Lacy[/name]. Which, to be fair, isn’t saying a tremendous amount.
I do think of National [name]Velvet[/name] and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Taylor[/name] which isn’t the worst association. And I admit to ranking a couple other fabric names amongst my guilty pleasures, notably [name]Calico[/name] and Dimity.
I love many V names and [name]Velvet[/name] wouldn’t crack the top five and would have to fight for top ten. But I prefer it to many names that are popular right now so I can’t say I hate it.
[name]Odin[/name] fits today’s trend of -n names. He’d fit in with [name]Gavin[/name] and [name]Jayden[/name].
[name]Velvet[/name] seems a bit odd to me. I have a hard time seeing “Your honorable judge, [name]Velvet[/name] [name]Smith[/name].” Then again people would have said that about [name]Barack[/name] [name]Obama[/name] back in the day. I don’t like it, but I think it would be easier to live as [name]Velvet[/name] than Madysen. Something tells me there is an interesting story behind that name. Can’t say I like it though.
Of all the names in all the world, these two would not be on my short list. But despite its more august history, I think Odin might be the harder name for a child to carry – “odor” teasing seems probable. Velvet, yes, is more than a bit porn star, but if you can set that image aside (c’mon, try), it has a pleasant association to both the fabric and the movie. And a prettier sound. And wouldn’t it be cool to have a president named Velvet?
Honestly, maybe I watched way too much National [name]Velvet[/name] as a child, but [name]Velvet[/name] doesnt bother me! I just hear [name]Angela[/name] Lansbury saying “[name]Velvet[/name]!” to [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Taylor[/name]…
Sibset in the movie was [name]Edwina[/name], Malvolia ([name]Mally[/name]), [name]Velvet[/name], and [name]Donald[/name].
Gotta say I see [name]Odin[/name] as more of a puppy name on the whole… [name]Velvet[/name], I don’t particularly care for as a first name. Think it could be gorgeous in the middle, though. [name]Thalia[/name] [name]Velvet[/name], [name]Helena[/name] [name]Velvet[/name], [name]Sasha[/name] [name]Velvet[/name], and [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Velvet[/name]. I like them, but I tend to be much more wild with middles because, honestly, they never get used. Overall, I don’t think I girl named [name]Velvet[/name] (or a boy [name]Odin[/name]) would be made fun of. I can think of much worse names.
I agree with many others here that [name]Odin[/name] is fine, NMS but it’s one of those names you would like to see on someone else’s kid haha…[name]Velvet[/name]…kinda makes me cringe really. Not sure what possessed her to name her daughter this. Hopefully there’s a nickname she’ll called for the majority of her life, like Vel? Not much better though.
[name]Velvet[/name] is one of my GPs. I love it. National [name]Velvet[/name] gave me the lifelong impression of [name]Velvet[/name] as an adventurous, brave, and strong-willed girl, and I also think of deer and the fabric, so I have good feelings toward the name, overall. I love the sound of it, too, with the verve of its double Vs and its -et ending, so reminiscent of [name]Scarlett[/name] and [name]Juliet[/name]. I don’t think I’d ever be brave enough to use it [name]IRL[/name] since, sadly, it gives too many people a “stripper” vibe, but I do enjoy playing around with it as a potential middle name.
[name]Odin[/name] is interesting–and I’d much rather see it than [name]Loki[/name]–but I don’t like it nearly as much as [name]Velvet[/name]. That OHD sound at the beginning reminds me too much of odor, odious, odium, and odonto- (referring to “tooth,” from the Greek).
[name]Velvet[/name] -shudders- Unfortunately, I am NOT a fan. Sounds like a dog’s name to me, my first response to hearing would be “Oh she must be a cute dog!”. The ideas just flow to soft plush material used for rugs and coats. Eh. And as others have mentioned, sounds a bit like a stripper stage name, not a name for a baby.
