I love the name [name]Pandora[/name] but I stopped considering it because of the app. My husband and I have never used the app but we know people who do. [name]How[/name] do you feel about the name? Would the app stop you from using [name]Pandora[/name] as a name?
No, the Greek myth would keep me from using [name]Pandora[/name].
I’m with @lyricmom [name]Pandora[/name] (and [name]Cassandra[/name]) while beautiful is off my list because of the greek myth it’s associated with.
first thing I thought of also was the Greek myth…
I’m thinking of the myth as well… It’s a beautiful name, and I like [name]Pandora[/name] (I mean, who wouldn’t open the box?) but it is a name most people have a negative association with.
I think of the myth but I’m not sure everyone would, I use [name]Pandora[/name] radio daily so for me it is too tied to the app despite the myth. Also the [name]Pandora[/name]'s box association isn’t that positive considering she opened it and let evil into the world.
There’s a blog here on NB called “These names mean trouble” and [name]Pandora[/name] is listed among them as the woman who almost killed the world, as per the myth.
[name]How[/name] about [name]Panya[/name] or [name]Dora[/name] instead?
Yeah, it’s not the app that’s the problem.
The negative Greek myth association doesn’t bother me at all. My only worry is about the app.
I actually think the app and the bracelet/bead trend has helped familiarize the name and nudge it more towards being usable again.
The Greek myth would stop me from using [name]Pandora[/name]. The app wouldn’t necessarily stop me. At first I thought it might but then I just substituted another name in there like [name]Petunia[/name] instead of [name]Pandora[/name] and it didn’t bother me. It’s just hard to get past the myth.
Ditto… and I watch “Skins” and there’s a character on that named [name]Pandora[/name], who gets called “Panda”, whose mom calls “Panda-poo” which is HILARIOUS on the show but would not be hilarious in real life.
The [name]Pandora[/name] radio alone wouldn’t bother me all that much. I figure in about 10 years we will have moved on to something else and at that point it’s going to be a mute concern. If you really love the name and all the negative associations other people have with it don’t bother you than I don’t think and app on your phone should stop you from using it either.
Your decision, obviously, but it looks like the majority of people on this thread think the opposite.
Yes I can see that, but it still personally doesn’t bother me. The majority of the people on this thread and I just have different opinions on this name regarding that. The [name]Pandora[/name] radio app is the only thing that ever worried me… it’s the only thing I stated I was actually worried about in my question for this thread, but thanks for your opinion
I love the name [name]Pandora[/name]. I’ve always found it curious that people feel so negatively towards the name because of the myth, while [name]Eve[/name] is acceptable. Their stories are very similar. As for the app, I wouldn’t let that stop me from using the name. I probably won’t use it for a child, because there are other names I like better, but if I did love it more than the others I’d use it in a heartbeat.
I think it is a lovely name! Neither the app nor the myth bothers me.
I love the name [name]Pandora[/name]. I understand the myth causing a problem (although it doesn’t for me), but I don’t think the app is in any way negative, so I don’t see why the app would make you not use it.
