Would these ever work on a little boy?

[name]Hi[/name], I’m no where having a child, but I like making list. I’ve made quite a list and I wondered if it would suit a little boy. And now I’d like some opinions. ^^

Absolutely would work on a little boy!: [name]Aaron[/name], [name]Benjamin[/name], [name]Caleb[/name], [name]Charles[/name], [name]Gabriel[/name], [name]Luke[/name], [name]Nathaniel[/name], [name]Ruben[/name] (often spelled [name]Reuben[/name]) , [name]Seth[/name], [name]William[/name]
Those are all solid classics and mostly very popular names. You’d never have an issue with them.

Slightly less common, but still recognizable and would work fine: [name]Alastair[/name], [name]Damon[/name], [name]Francis[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Ivan[/name], [name]Lucas[/name], [name]Rupert[/name], [name]Vincent[/name], [name]Sebastian[/name], [name]Xavier[/name], [name]Roman[/name], [name]Tristan[/name], [name]Kieran[/name], [name]Xander[/name], [name]Edwyn[/name] (though spelled [name]Edwin[/name])

Recognizable, but would likely be seen as “weird” by many people (at least in my area), but not out of the realm of possibility: [name]Alejandro[/name], [name]Apollo[/name], [name]Armando[/name], [name]Carlisle[/name], [name]Julius[/name], [name]Leopold[/name], [name]Vladimir[/name], [name]Cain[/name], [name]Gable[/name], [name]Cassius[/name], [name]Sergey[/name], [name]Santiago[/name], [name]Alaric[/name], [name]Deandre[/name],

Would be seen as super weird to most people in my area, mostly because they are names of various pagan gods and aren’t seen as usable first names to people, I wouldn’t encourage you to use them in the first name spot unless you’re really open to a lot of weird looks and criticism: Agenor, Arcas, Ares, [name]Calix[/name], [name]Cobalt[/name], [name]Demetrius[/name], [name]Dionysus[/name], Emyr, [name]Eoin[/name], Epaphus, Erebus, [name]Eros[/name], [name]Eryx[/name], Galahad, [name]Gawain[/name], Gwynfor, Ilyas, [name]Lemuel[/name], [name]Lucien[/name], [name]Lyall[/name], Lyros, [name]Lysander[/name], [name]Mars[/name], Minos, [name]Mordecai[/name], [name]Perseus[/name], Priapus, Silviu, [name]Vasiliy[/name]

Really, please don’t name your kid this: Hades, [name]Helios[/name], [name]Heracles[/name], Mordred, [name]Marquis[/name], [name]Jupiter[/name], [name]Io[/name], Lithium, Polydeuces, [name]Raiden[/name], Sachin, Sarpedon, [name]Scorpio[/name], [name]Xerxes[/name]

For me using pagan names would be better, rather than Biblical as I’m pagan myself, so it’d make some sense or at least in my head it does.
I think those you listed in the not name kids that, is more guilty pleasures. I’d love having a [name]Xerxes[/name], but my girlfriend already vetoed it. But I don’t see why it’s so awful calling a child [name]Marquis[/name], it’s just like [name]Prince[/name], [name]Duke[/name] and [name]Dean[/name].

I do think there are mythological names that are usable. I’d consider names like [name]Apollo[/name], [name]Argus[/name], [name]Atlas[/name], [name]Ajax[/name], [name]Damon[/name], [name]Griffin[/name], [name]Leander[/name], [name]Thor[/name], [name]Tristan[/name], [name]Troy[/name] and others to be usable. I’d just, personally, steer clear of names that have very strong negative connotations like Hades.

As for title names, I wouldn’t consider [name]Prince[/name] to be usable either, but then this is all my opinion. It would certainly depend on your location, language, background, etc. for whether those would cause a lot of problems. I know that I personally wouldn’t want to be named something like Duchess–mostly because those types of names are used a lot of dogs in my area (Lady, [name]Princess[/name], [name]Prince[/name], [name]Duke[/name], etc.)

Yeah, I know Hades would be hated. I’d do love the idea of a male [name]Artemis[/name], and the sad part is I have a last name starting with A. If I hader a girl and her name was [name]Wednesday[/name] she’d possible be teased because of the association of The Addams Family, plus an [name]Artemis[/name] would be A.A.
I don’t think [name]Prince[/name] is either, [name]Duke[/name] & [name]Dean[/name] I’m more up to. At this moment I live in Denmark, but I really want to move to [name]England[/name] and live. I’ve grown up in a little Province with a handful of Emmas, Emilies, [name]Cecilie[/name] ectra (common Danish names + the top ten from when I was born). I would never want any of my children having to live with the idea of being another [name]Luke[/name] or [name]Gabriel[/name], but rather out of their own name. But here in Denmark you hardly here any different names, the least common was [name]Erik[/name], I’ve heard and that’s still quite normal. Or [name]Per[/name], which is a dated name. So no matter what name I choose it’ll always be weird in Denmark.
And as I have a different style than [name]Sofie[/name] (the girlfriend), it’d be hard time when it actually comes to naming our children. She wants [name]Arthur[/name], Allistor and [name]Gilbert[/name]. I can agree on [name]Arthur[/name] as that has a meaning to me, but for her (being serious) it’s because of the anime/manga Hetalia. And I don’t want my children living with that over their head. I’ve lived with being [name]Elizabeth[/name] with Z because my paternal grandmother felt I was named after my maternal grandmother Birthe [name]Elisabeth[/name]. But then again, I think it’s how you’re raised and where you come from. Because here it’s not normal naming children after family. [name]Just[/name] pop on a name you love and s/he’s good to go!
I just remembered [name]Rico[/name] is very unusual name in Denmark and my father has it. I just had forgotten, because I hear it everyday.

I actually really like [name]Artemis[/name] on a boy as well. Have you read the [name]Artemis[/name] Fowl books? They make me always see the name as masculine. I know a guy names [name]Aristotle[/name] who goes by [name]Aris[/name], so it’s not that strange names are impossible to live with, you just have to get used to the idea of your name being discussed a lot. Nobody is ever gonna comment on your name if it’s [name]Sarah[/name], but if it’s something like Erebus you might get sick of how much people talk about your name.

I love the name [name]Arthur[/name] But I have an uncommonly strong attachment to Mr. Weasley, lol. He’s my literary husband. Hetalia is actually kinda pretty too, as well as [name]Talia[/name], but I understand about being weirded out because of where a name comes from.

I’ve read them yes, they are wonderful! I have them in, though only the Danish version and two English books. I’ve always seen it as masculine.
Haha, the named [name]Elizabeth[/name] is discussed a lot in Denmark, because that is unusual, which I’ve grown to learn people will talk. And I’ve ignored it.

I love it too, but not from a series. x3 I think of my friend from [name]Rio[/name] De Janeiro , so no [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] here.
Yeah, might be because I don’t really care about Hetalia and she loves it.

[name]Love[/name] your list!

[name]Aaron[/name] – If you’re pagan I find it weird to name your child after the first High [name]Priest[/name] of [name]Israel[/name]. But it’s a lovely name, and it definitely works in Danish.
Agenor – Quite nice, and I think it would work nicely.
[name]Alaric[/name] – Yes! [name]Love[/name] [name]Alaric[/name], it’s easy to spell and pronounce, and would fit in nicely yet stand apart.
[name]Alastair[/name] – [name]Love[/name] this, I can see it working well in Danish. Aleister too Crowley for you?
[name]Alejandro[/name] – I’m not a huge fan of this, I prefer classic [name]Alexander[/name], Italian [name]Alessandro[/name] or quirky Skandar.
[name]Apollo[/name] – I love [name]Apollo[/name], but isn’t there a travel agency in Denmark called [name]Apollo[/name]?
Arcas – Ooooh, yes, please! [name]Callisto[/name]’s son and [name]King[/name] of [name]Arcadia[/name]! [name]Love[/name] this, and it’s usable too.
Ares – [name]Love[/name] this as well, I can’t use it myself, so I’d love to see it on someone elses list. However, he was the God of lots of not so nice things (I’m sure you know as you’re pagan, but lots of people seem to confuse Ares role in battle with [name]Athene[/name]’s. She was the strategist, he was the Godof bloodshed and destruction in battle). [name]How[/name] do you feel about [name]Aries[/name]? It’s pronounced the same way, but to me it’s more mysterious, and is connected to so many of the really good stories.
[name]Armando[/name] – I love [name]Armand[/name], [name]Armando[/name] sounds like a circus.
[name]Benjamin[/name] – Quite lovely, and obviously usable. I’m a huge fan of [name]Benjamin[/name] Britten so that helps.
[name]Cain[/name] – No. I think this name is horrible, not only for the Biblical association, but also the sound. And it sounds very nasal in Danish.
[name]Caleb[/name] – Yup, this is nice.
[name]Calix[/name] – Teehee, yes, I like this. I love –lix names. Means goblet, which is a nice thing. I’m not sure I’m crazy about how it would sound in Danish, but it’s pronounceable for sure.
[name]Carlisle[/name] – This one’s ok, but I’m not crazy about it in Danish. The –lisle part gets very muddled.
[name]Cassius[/name] – Yeah, this ones good. I love [name]Cassian[/name] more, but [name]Cassius[/name] is a fine strong name of brave men.
[name]Charles[/name] – Definitely works, and it’s so handsome! I’m considering adding [name]Charles[/name] to my middle list, it just makes me happy! And sounds cute in Danish too.
[name]Cobalt[/name] – haha, this is actually quite cool.
[name]Damon[/name] – Yes!! I love [name]Damon[/name]. [name]One[/name] of my very favourite myths. And it works brilliantly in Danish too!
[name]Deandre[/name] – No, I don’t like this one. You see why, right? De andre?
[name]Demetrius[/name] – Yes, this one’s good. Would work in D-mark.
[name]Dionysus[/name] – Almost everything sounds cool in Danish, I realise skipping down this list. And he’s one of my favourite Gods, the untamed wild nature!
[name]Edwyn[/name] – I’d prefer [name]Edvin[/name] or [name]Edwin[/name] for a Danish kid. But it’s cute none the less.
Emyr – Yeah, this is quite nice.
[name]Eoin[/name] – Really, I have a hard time saying this in Danish.
Epaphus – It’s weird, but doable. I wouldn’t.
Erebus – Haha, yeah, this one sounds nice too.
[name]Eros[/name] – The God of [name]Love[/name]! Oh please keep this on your list! I can’t use it, but it’s fabulous! I love the God, and I love love love [name]Eros[/name] Ramazzotti!!!
[name]Eryx[/name] – YES! It’s great sounding in Danish, it’s close to [name]Eric[/name] and it’s a whole bucketful of awesome.
[name]Francis[/name] – Yup yup, it works.
[name]Gable[/name] – It works, but I’ not a fan.
[name]Gabriel[/name] – This is nice, and very very pretty.
Galahad – The name of my cat! If I could go back in time I’d have named her something else, so I could use this for a baby. But, alas. Anyway, yes, this is great.
[name]Gawain[/name] – Ooh, please keep this too. So romantic! And sounds great in the tongue of the Danes.
Gwynfor – No, scratch. It’s impossible. Gwydion?
Hades – I don’t mind the [name]King[/name] of the Underworld, but it’s very close to the Danish word for hate.
[name]Helios[/name] – Ooooh, yes, lovely. Beautiful word and a nice association.
[name]Heracles[/name] – Nice name, but with a very massive association for most people. Plus, he’s have his very own Disney movie.
Ilyas – [name]Love[/name] this name. Gorgeous, and sounds delicious in Danish.
[name]Io[/name] –Girl name! [name]Jo[/name] is male.
[name]Ivan[/name] – [name]Love[/name], and works perfectly well-
[name]Julian[/name] – See above.
[name]Julius[/name] – See above.
[name]Jupiter[/name] – I like this, it’s less in your face than [name]Zeus[/name] and a planet. He was a notorious rapist though….
[name]Kieran[/name] – [name]Lovely[/name].
[name]Lemuel[/name] – Sounds too close to Lemur for my taste.
[name]Leopold[/name] – Oooh, yes! Cute and fun and romantic.
Lithium – You’re joking right? As a bipolar chick I say no. I love my lithium, but it’s not a good association.
[name]Lucas[/name] – I love this. Did you read [name]Michael[/name] Ende’s book [name]Jim[/name] Knap & [name]Lukas[/name] Lokomotivfører when you were little? Such a comforting and beautiful name-
[name]Lucien[/name] – [name]Love[/name] this. It’s beautiful.
[name]Luke[/name] – I prefer [name]Lucas[/name], but it works.
[name]Lyall[/name] – It sounds weird.
Lyros – No.
[name]Lysander[/name] – Yes! Very nice. I think he’s an idiot (the one in A Midsummer [name]Night[/name]’s [name]Dream[/name]), but a lovely name.
[name]Marquis[/name] – No. I think a lot of people will think of de [name]Sade[/name].
[name]Mars[/name] – I prefer Ares, as [name]Mars[/name] is also a chocolate.
Minos – It works, but I wouldn’t.
[name]Mordecai[/name] – Cool, and works in Danish. The only thing is the mord part (murder).
Mordred – See above.
[name]Nathaniel[/name] – Works very well indeed.
[name]Perseus[/name] – I love this name, but it sounds awful in Danish.
Polydeuces – This is horrible. Polydorus?
Priapus – Listen, I am a huge fan of all kinds of mythology names, but this dude was not only a fertility God, he was famous for his genitals. His enormous genitals.
[name]Raiden[/name] – I’m not a fan, but it’s not awful.
[name]Roman[/name] – [name]Love[/name] this, so handsome!
[name]Ruben[/name] – Gorgeous, and just a nice sweet and fun name.
[name]Rupert[/name] – I love this, and sounds super cute and clunky in Danish. Keep please!
Sachin – Eeh, no.
[name]Santiago[/name] – Yeah, this is nice. I like it very much. And it rocks in Danish.
Sarpedon – I see why you like it, but I’m not sure I like how it sounds.
[name]Scorpio[/name] – I don’t like scorpions, so this is just odd.
[name]Sebastian[/name] – Beautiful and sexy. Like it very much.
[name]Sergey[/name] – I’d spell it [name]Sergei[/name], but lovely either way.
[name]Seth[/name] – No, not in Danish.
Silviu – [name]Silvan[/name], [name]Sylvan[/name], [name]Silvanus[/name] all sound better to me.
[name]Tristan[/name] – Yes, very nice.
[name]Vasiliy[/name] – I’m not sure about this in Danish, but it’s a wonderful name. I love it!
[name]Vincent[/name] – Yes, very good, and the name of your super cute little prince!
[name]Vladimir[/name] – I like it. It’s cool and Russian and badass.
[name]William[/name] – [name]Love[/name] this name, so beautiful and strong and romantic.
[name]Xander[/name] – Sounds nice in Danish.
[name]Xavier[/name] – Oh, yes, this is so cool! Keep please!
[name]Xerxes[/name] – On my own list, but I think it sounds a bit pretentious.

[name]May[/name] I suggest [name]Cadmus[/name], Sigurd and Arion?

[name]Alaric[/name]
[name]Alejandro[/name]
[name]Armando[/name]
[name]Carlisle[/name]
[name]Cassius[/name]
[name]Demetrius[/name] – I went to school with a few [name]Demetri[/name]’s, so this name doesn’t seem like a stretch to me, but it might depend on where you live.
[name]Edwyn[/name] – I prefer the spelling [name]Edwin[/name], which would stick it in the classic category for me.
Ilyas – Is this pronounced the same as [name]Elias[/name]? If so, [name]Elias[/name] would be more user friendly.

[name]Xerxes[/name]

[name]Just[/name] say no

[name]Eros[/name] – Would you want to be named after the messenger of love during your teenage years?
Galahad
[name]Gawain[/name]
Hades
[name]Heracles[/name]
[name]Io[/name] – A feminine name, whose unfortunate bearer was turned into a cow
Lithium – Chemistry lessons would be awful for this kid
[name]Marquis[/name] – I find overt title names such as [name]Marquis[/name], [name]Princess[/name], [name]Duke[/name], etc. pretentious.
Mordred – Bit Disney villanish
Polydeuces – You drop a deuce. Poly means many…
[name]Scorpio[/name]
Priapus – Keep reading this as Papyrus
[name]Raiden[/name] – I just really don’t like this name
Sarpedon

The rest I’m ambivalent on.

I find it funny why Hades is unpopular and [name]Persephone[/name] is popular (love both names though), as they are in the same legend.

@tfzolghadr - I’m not where near living in the US and I’ll never move there, so for it might be better using the [name]Lemuel[/name] name, though not on a danish kid. And I am now going to sound like a dumb teen, but who is [name]Matt[/name] [name]Damon[/name]? I guess he is someone from the TV, but I’m much more into books. The Lady Gaga connection I can’t see at all, might be because she’s not big here and I’ve hardly heard the name [name]Alejandro[/name]. I don’t like the spelling [name]Owen[/name], I love [name]Eoin[/name]. And as I’m still not from US, I don’t see any problem in it. I like [name]Roman[/name], it honors my friends from Ukraine as I wouldn’t like naming the little guy Aleksander or Artjom.

@Otttilie - I honestly don’t pronounce the name in Danish, reallly, I have a hard time even saying my brothers names correctly and that’s [name]Phillip[/name], so how it works in Danish is nothing I care about. ^^ I love A names, and Arion is gorgeous! But I’m afraid of giving it to a child, who’ll end up with a last name starting with an A. Having the intials es (ace) made me crazy, when I went to kindergarden and elementary school. I know the weirdness of [name]Aaron[/name], but I’ve always been sooo in love with that name (+ [name]Aiden[/name], but of various of reason it’s not going on the list again). I don’t know the lokomotivfører story, I think I read more… ugh… Goosebumps (I think that’s the English name). Oh I forgot to mention that I have [name]Aries[/name] on my unisex list, so I’m quite keen on using it!

@Iamamiam - I like [name]Thane[/name], thus I think of a guy going on a killing spree (Why, I have no idea). And I don’t care if the historic person was violent. [name]Alaric[/name] is a pretty name and a boy could make it his own.

@Novaberry - I can’t use the name [name]Elias[/name], since my (no longer) aunt named her son that. It’s really sad, because I love that name and that spelling, but we don’t have any contact with this woman whatsoever, because of her tearing us apart. So I think Ilyas is better.

I think Hades is less popular than [name]Persephone[/name] because;

  1. He is the god of the underworld, and therefore associated with death, which people don’t want to think about when naming their new baby. [name]Persephone[/name] is his consort, but she was taken to the the underworld against her will, which makes her more sympathetic. She was also acknowledged as beautiful, which is still an attractive trait for parents of daughters.

  2. Hades is a harsher, more sinister sound than [name]Persephone[/name]. Soft, romantic sounding girls names like [name]Persephone[/name] always have a following.

  3. In the Disney film ‘[name]Hercules[/name]’, Hades was a comical, inept villian. Nobody wants a comical, inept villian for a son.

  4. Parents are generally more willing to be experimental with girls’ names than boys’ names. Hades just might be too far out to consider for the (generally) more conservative audience. [name]Persephone[/name], despite being equally far out, has a more generally accepting audience in the first place (i.e. the parents of girl). However, I’m willing to bet there are still very few parents who actually call their daughter [name]Persephone[/name] when all said and done, however much it is liked on a naming board.

Would Work:
[name]Aaron[/name]
[name]Alastair[/name]
[name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]Caleb[/name]
[name]Cassius[/name] (borderline, maybe [name]Cassian[/name] is better?)
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]Damon[/name]
[name]Edwyn[/name] (spelled [name]Edwin[/name])
[name]Gabriel[/name]
[name]Gawain[/name] (borderline)
[name]Ivan[/name]
[name]Kieran[/name]
[name]Lucas[/name]
[name]Luke[/name]
[name]Lyall[/name] (spelled [name]Lyle[/name])
[name]Mordecai[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Perseus[/name] (This one’s a little iffy, but I think [name]Percy[/name] would be cute as a nickname and would work)
[name]Raiden[/name]
[name]Roman[/name]
[name]Ruben[/name] ([name]Rueben[/name] would be better)
[name]Sebastian[/name]
[name]Seth[/name]
[name]Tristan[/name]
