Would this name get confused for something else?

So DH suggested the name [name_m]Caio[/name_m], which we really like and feel it’s just our style. Tell me berries, when you say this name out loud (KYE-oh) … does it sound like another very common boy’s name?? When he first said it I heard the name

[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Kyle[/name_m]

[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

and if I’m not the only one I may have to nix it! Useable or no? Any other thoughts on the name? (Sorry if the format of this post comes out weird, don’t normally use the blur tool)

I didn’t hear that at all at first! The only name I could think you’d be referencing was [name_m]Kai[/name_m]. Now that you’ve said it, I do hear it, but it wouldn’t be my first thought if I heard it in real life, especially[name_f][/name_f] on a baby.

People’s brains go to whatever is most familiar. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Aurora[/name_f], and I usually get “Laura.” [name_f]My[/name_f] son [name_m]Ransom[/name_m] has gotten “Branson,” and my daughter [name_f]Deliverance[/name_f] gets “Elizabeth” or “Olivia.”

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m not sure I’d think “Kyle” myself, but I’d guess you’ll encounter people who will.

The only similar thing my mind went to was “Cairo”.
[name_f][/name_f]I agree with the previous post, people will turn anything into anything. But I doubt it will be a constant experience.

Saying it outloud I did think of [name_m]Kyle[/name_m], and yes I do think people will mishear it as [name_m]Kyle[/name_m].

[name_f][/name_f]

But I also think it’s a really cool name, and it wouldn’t take more than one time to correct it.

It’s similar to Gaio, because it’s part of the Cayetano/Gaetano root, but I hear [name_m]Caio[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] It doesn’t sound the same as [name_m]Kyle[/name_m] or [name_m]Kai[/name_m].

Honestly names will get mistaken it’s not really something you can control and it is very easy to correct. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] her name gets mistaken for a whole range of different names [name_f]Liliana[/name_f], [name_f]Lilian[/name_f], [name_f]Leila[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Aleah[/name_f] or [name_f]Alaya[/name_f] etc you just have to be firm when correcting then people will often accept the pronunciation and move on. Personally I see the name being more commonly accepted for [name_m]Cairo[/name_m] than [name_m]Kyle[/name_m].

It does[name_f][/name_f] sound a bit like a toddler saying [name_m]Kyle[/name_m], and written out it looks like [name_m]Cairo[/name_m] misspelled. But none of that matters if you really love it! Corrections are easy enough to people who will need to use the name more than once.

I don’t hear it and actually thought of [name_m]Caillou[/name_m] first….

[name_f][/name_f]

I think it’s a great name though!

I think if I heard it said in a noisy environment, I might muddle it with Kyle, but then I think I could get a lot of names muddled in a similar situation. (as a Grace, I’ve been called Jess and Ash more that once :person_shrugging:

More generally though, if I heard Caio said, I would hear KYE-oh and not assume it was Kyle. If anything, I think Kairo or Kylo would be more likely what I mistake it as?

Caio has a pleased sound - cool and contemporary - slightly edgy but not in a rough way, more like edgy but friendly too?
One little thing that did come to mind, is that it did make me think of Ciao when written down?

I LOVE [name_m]Caio[/name_m]! [name_f][/name_f] It’s fairly well known in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] (I’ve met a few!), and he seems so lively and upbeat imo. [name_f][/name_f] I don’t think of [name_m]Kyle[/name_m] at all, if anything I would think of [name_m]Kai[/name_m]. [name_f][/name_f] I would be tickled pink to meet a little [name_m]Caio[/name_m], I think it’s a wonderful name! [name_f][/name_f] (I especially love him with your little one’s name!)

This was my thought exactly [name_f][/name_f]- like a toddler trying to say [name_m]Kyle[/name_m] but can’t say the “L”. But I also agree that it should be an easy correction, especially that it’s 4 letters making it easier for a young child to spell their name. Thank you!

This is what I thought too, that maybe it would be easier to understand in a regular setting, but possibly misheard in a noisier environment. It’s not a common name here, whereas [name_m]Kyle[/name_m] is (albeit not for babies). I hadn’t thought of [name_m]Kairo[/name_m] or [name_m]Kylo[/name_m] or Ciao possibilities, and have to admit that makes me even more nervous to use it! But thanks for your positive thoughts on the name, I agree with the edgy yet friendly vibe!

I didn’t even think of, or hear [name_m]Kyle[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Caio[/name_m] is such a cool name! If anything, people might hear [name_m]Kai[/name_m].
[name_f][/name_f]But I think that it can happen to any name.

Thank you for your positive feedback on [name_m]Caio[/name_m]! I agree with everything you said, it feels upbeat and lively to me too. We also do love it with DS’s name. [name_m]Happy[/name_m] to hear that it’s known in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m], I do wish it was a bit less obscure where we are from though. thanks for your thoughts!

lol doesn’t really help me much that it’s popular in [name_m]Brazil[/name_m] either :joy::joy:[name_f][/name_f]. After saying [name_m]Caio[/name_m] a few times out loud, I see the concern, but I think there are quite a few rare names that could sound like popular names, so I wouldn’t let that hold me back! [name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Caio[/name_m] is great match with your son’s name. I think you would get so many complements. It’s streamlined, cool and bubbly. I didn’t hear it as anything else. I was only thinking that some people will read it as KAY-oh. I think it’s very useable.

[name_f][/name_f]

I’ve been concerned about sound-alike names in the past, especially more popular sound-alike names. Nowadays, I’m not sure there’s much to be gained by cataloguing them except doubt. I think it overemphasises a negative that probably won’t come up very much in the scheme of things.

[name_f][/name_f]

I would add it to the list and enjoy playing around with it!

:joy:[name_f][/name_f] Funny how that works!

Thank you so much! It seems the overall consensus says useable so I will have some fun with it and see if it continues to grow on me
