Would you assume a boy or girl Sam?

So, I’ve always loved the name [name]Sam[/name] ([name]Samuel[/name]). But, my niece goes by [name]Frankie[/name] and it’s likely if they ever had another girl she would be a similar name/nickname. My girls’ names are [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]. My question is that if you heard for example:

[name]Ruby[/name] (g), [name]Lucy[/name] (g), [name]Sam[/name] (?), [name]Frankie[/name] (g), & [name]Charlie[/name] (g) would you assume [name]Sam[/name] was a lone boy in the bunch or would you think he was a [name]Samantha[/name]?

Honestly, siblings have completely different styles. My one sister wants to name her daughter [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Haley[/name]. I wouldn’t be caught dead naming my daughter [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Haley[/name], lol. My other sister would love to use [name]Andromeda[/name] nn [name]Anna[/name], another name I wouldn’t be caught dead using. (Ironically, all three of us have [name]Olivia[/name] on our top three!) I wouldn’t really consider her children to be mixed in with yours–if you end up with a [name]Sam[/name], your family will know he’s a boy, and compared to [name]Lucy[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name], [name]Sam[/name] is pretty obviously male!

But to answer your question, yes, I would think [name]Sam[/name] = boy. Always. But that’s because [name]Samuel[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name] is on my own list. The only [name]Sam[/name] I know atm is a [name]Samantha[/name] nn [name]Sam[/name], but I’d still think [name]Sam[/name] = boy because I adore [name]Samuel[/name] so much.

[name]Just[/name] thought to add statistics–[name]Samuel[/name] ranked one spot higher for boys (number 25) than [name]Samantha[/name] did for girls (26)–with nearly 4,500 more little Samuels born than Samanthas. Plus, [name]Sam[/name] ranks at number 518 for boys, and not at all for girls, so if you love [name]Sam[/name] for a boy, I think you’re pretty safe. It’s still quite strongly in the boys’ camp.

I agree with [name]Ash[/name], I wouldn’t worry at all about how my child’s name sounded with his cousins. Sibsets are hard enough we don’t need to worry about cousin sets. Besides, your sister might never have another girl or she might go with a name that you don’t expect.

I would think [name]Sam[/name], [name]Frankie[/name], and [name]Charlie[/name] were all boys. [name]Sam[/name] is all boy to me.

If you gave me those five names and no other information I would assume [name]Sam[/name], [name]Frankie[/name], and [name]Charlie[/name] were all boys.

I would assume [name]Sam[/name], [name]Frankie[/name], and [name]Charlie[/name] were boys.

Same here.

I would assume a boy [name]Sam[/name] with sisters [name]Ruby[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name]. I would be more likely to assume that [name]Frankie[/name] and [name]Charlie[/name] were boys than that [name]Sam[/name] was a girl.

[name]Sam[/name]'s unisex-ness is part of its appeal to me, but I do have to admit that I picture a boy when I hear the name, even though I logically know that there are about as many Samanthas as Samuels.
